Saw this originally on "Video Concert Hall" back in 82. Great solos by Eddie, and Mike and Alex are both consumate showmen and players. Dave shows why he's one of the best rock front men of all time.
Saw this originally on "Video Concert Hall" back in 82. Great solos by Eddie, and Mike and Alex are both great showmen and players. Dave shows why he's one of the great rock front men of all time.
Mna just watch these guys!! iN THEIR PRIME! So raw, natural, just letting their talent shine through! =VH= at this point was sooo fucking untouchable, period. They meshed musically so perfectly. 81 was the shit, no doubt. I heard michael anthony in an interview from 91 that he felt that Fair Warning was his favorite album, no wonder. Fuck!!! Unreal sound. Marshall amps, larger than life stage performance, on and on and on and on. 1981 =VH= is the best. Period.
VH was great because their music was heavy and raw straight out of the garage with blow the roof off guitar riffs. Roth was not a perfect "singer" but thats what made him great because he just sounded cool. When I heard VH 1 I throw away my Kiss album and bought VH 1 and it was all for the better. I had a "growth" spirt in my musical taste I guess.
i wish i was born during the 70s, mtv used to be good, now they show hip hop shit and rob and big and emo music and jackass. fuck that, the only thing close enough to 80s stuff is VH1 classic metal mania
Man-O-man. Back in the day when EVH plugged his guitar into a pile of Marshalls with a few stompboxes and an Echolpex in between and played it. There is no better "dimed Plexi" tone than Unchained, period.
I really, really hated it when he built that huge rack with harmonizers and choruses and DDL and used a speaker simulator and solid state power amps. Tone went all to hell.
The first 4 albums had the tone. It was digital poop after that.
I used to be a huge Van Halen fan, but after the way the Van Halen brothers treated Mike Anthony just so Wolfgang could play in the band I've lost all respect for them.
@SuperVerst I totally agree. Michael Anthony put up with a LOT of crap from Eddie over the years, and firing him was inexcusable. It was also stupid because mike's backing vocals were a huge part of their sound. It's like everyone in the world recognized that, except the leader of the band.
Look at all the shitbag bands today making their so called music.... give me a break... if you didnt see VH live back then, you really missed out on a totally kickass rock show
@DoctorBob409 Ok, i like VH and i like David Lee Roth? I dont listen to marilyn manson? i listen to rock? Im not gay? Im straight? I know van halen rocks? and i dont where pajamas? what are you like 30 and still live with your parents?
@DoctorBob409 ok sorry bout what i said bout ur parents, but no i never will cut on dave is in my opinion the greatest rock frontman to live to date. That is pretty sweet u went to highschool with dave have u talked to him lately
I agree, granted Wolfie is still a teenager (if I'm not mistaken) but they still rock! Can he harmonize like Monster Mike, No. Can he pluck the bass like Mike, No...but he can still play! Give the kid time..VH still kicks ass! no matter what the naysayers spew outta their envious mouths.
little wolfie has a long way to go to be like the one who he took his job from! Michael Anthony is a monster bassman and a very important part of the band, his playing is unmistakable and the backing vocals just complete the song. Damn it Eddie!!
@MrYourmomswallows Just that he went on with Sammy..tells it all,he has a great unselfish - non self absorbed personality - a true veteran - it's in his blood to play... where ever he sets up camp ..not all about popularity ,image, money. well like ... Sammy
M Anthony is so underrated. Fair Warning is the best VH record, IMO. These guys were so young, here. Bash, Rock, and Roll all night. Such vitality they had. THE party band.
HO-LEE SHIT!!! Edward is THE king of ten fingers and six strings. He HAS to be an alien. But the sum is a total of it's parts. All of them were on top of their game here. Alex WAILS, crushes his kit constantly. Mike is HUGE with his bass and backing vocals, and Dave, well, he's Dave. I miss Mikey the most. I wish they'd kiss and make up for us fans. Always had it; Always will! The best of VH, and I LOVE Sammy. But this ROCKS!
Listen to that outro solo!First time i heard that,it blew my mind. What's interesting is that all 4 original members had a big band swing background and put it in the music rather than bury it or tuck it away thinking it didn't belong in rock and roll.I'm surprised the medics weren't called in to aid the crowd, seeing how they all got their ears blown back at this show!
I don't know about you guys, but my fav VH album after the first album is Fair Warning. With songs like this, Mean Streets, Unchained, Hear about it later I personally think it is better then 1984.
This is when music in general was good, this also shows why this quote, "Reunion" tour that they just went on needed Michael Anthony, one of the most greatest backing vocalist of all time.
MMTOMB3 Great frontman or Egotistcal Frontman .Make up your Mind. Are You Kidding ? Who Do you Prefer ? Eddie Vedder, Jack White. 1 of the Jonas Brothers, or Maybe Justin Timberlake ?
this band had it all; great frontman, innovative guitarist, melodic bassist, decent drummer, great stage presence, etc. But they had one BIG problem, an egotistical frontman. But man did they ever make magic when together.
This song has a boogie feel kind of like Grand Funk / Black Oak / ZZ Top...but only Van Halen can take that feel and make it their own....Just saying it really reminds me of a '70s "rock boogie" feel.....One of Eddie's best solos (underrated) in my opinion...unusually "bluesy" and not overly finger-tappy
In addition to Van Halen's "So this is Love" being identical to the Runaways "California Paradise", also compare to "Footstompin' Music" by Grand Funk Railroad.
I couldn't agree MORE. Their best stuff is like buried treasure... Top Jimmy, Take Your Whiskey Home, Push Comes to Shove, well,... about all of Fair Warning... it was for that reason, actually that I posted a vid of me playing Push C.T.S. - a tribute to one of the most genius gtr solos ever recorded!! :-)
I was watching this just saying how this was the day when the world of Rock n Roll was right. Everything just sounded great, the band was great. Its a shame we'll never see anything quite like it was here.....
I am a casual VH fan but I must admit that when they were in their prime and clicking on all cylinders there may not have ever been a better live band. Their energy, charisma and showmanship are unparalleled.
I have often wondered what the reaction would have been if this Van Halen (1981) had played Woodstock? I mean, think about what Hendrix, Pete Townsend, etc. would have been thinking!!! "Where the hell did THIS guy come from???" LOL
Who said it below? There's enough enerngy on that stage to power Los Angeles....for a month....That was great...and he was right. Van Halen was better when they were drunk. It was like two shows in one. You had Dave and you had Eddie. Back in the day when front row tickets were eleven dollars. Believe it.
Absolutely correct. The only reason he got canned was because EVH was already grooming his kid to play bass for the band. I heard Mike only played on 3 tracks on the VH3 album. Next thing he'll do is fire Roth (AGAIN!!) and make Wolfie sing lead as well.
alex plays some killer drum fills on this - great triplet fills before each chorus and at 1:54 and 2:30! I saw them back in 1984 and he didn;t play nearly as technical as this. Also some cool improv by Mike on bass. Alex and Mike are solid, without which Eddie could not have taken so many guitar leaps of performance live.
This is rock to the Nth degree, Holy Moly! This rock-n-roll in your face-good time-whiskey-drinkin-beer chuggin-don't kick a man when he's down-half moon smile kinda music will never ever be duplicated again!! You guys cornered the market on producing good stuff!!
i totally agree breeder 99... mike anthony knew his place in the band. the spot light was on ed and dave always. mike held it down with his vocals and bass playing..he lived the dream being in a rock band and living in of all places glendora ca. not exactly the place you'd find a rock star. the dude is a humble man.. he may be better off on his own.
Michael Anthony added so much to this band. Listen to how he fills in the sound when Eddie takes a solo. His background vocals are a signature of the VH sound just as much as Roth's vocals or Eddie's guitar tone and technique. Wolfie can never live up to Michael's contribution. He's been disgraced by not being invited back to participate
They were unbeatable back then. I miss that Van Halen. Roth was too cool. I know age has something to do with it but did he have some bad plastic surgery?
Harrison 77 you dont know shit! Get Van Halen 2 and put the right side speaker on only and listen to Light Up The Sky. There's no way Wolfie could ever rock the bass like Mike. DLR knows, but he don't wanna piss Eddie off.
if you actually LISTENED to this song you'd hear that when Eddie plays it straight, during the verses and final riff, Mike is actually throwing in all sorts of bass fills and licks. even during ed's solos, he's right there soloing away too with complementary bass lines. there's no way wolfie could ever play this well...hats off to you mike!!
my buds was from ...2 from cali who'd grown up in halen concerts k? and a ole georgia boy who loved ratt, a bro from he didn't say... we'd hang in the calif. boyz a/o and chill. they had a state of the art px entertainment system and the vids it was friggin awesome.
Yeah, I hear whatcha sayin about them today verderacer, but my statement is strongly based upon this clip which is from the FAIR WARNING time period! I saw them twice @ THE STAPLES CENTER here in L.A. and it was truly a bitter sweet event!!! Im glad Eddie is having "father/son time, but I miss Mr. Michael Anthony ALOT!!!!
To ANYONE who dosent think that VAN HALEN is truly one of the GREATEST ROCK BANDS that has EVER lived, PLEASE WATCH THIS AND PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE PERFORMANCE! Especially the BACK UP VOCALS!!! They are NOT the same as the album ...,they are BETTER!!! MICHAEL ANTHONY KICKS ASS!!!

The greatest rock bands of all time? Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Van halen, AC/DC and the Stones, in no particular order.

alex plays some killer drum fills on this - great triplet fills before each chorus and at 1:54 and 2:30!

I remember this would show up on MTV once in a blue moon. Such a great "B side" VH song but didn't get a lot of airplay. The solo kicks mucho culo!

Agree, Mike is Van Halen. Wolfie is ok but it just doesn't feel good with Mike at home.

i totally agree breeder 99... mike anthony knew his place in the band. the spot light was on ed and dave always. mike held it down with his vocals and bass playing..he lived the dream being in a rock band and living in of all places glendora ca. not exactly the place you'd find a rock star. the dude is a humble man.. he may be better off on his own.

Michael Anthony added so much to this band. Listen to how he fills in the sound when Eddie takes a solo. His background vocals are a signature of the VH sound just as much as Roth's vocals or Eddie's guitar tone and technique. Wolfie can never live up to Michael's contribution. He's been disgraced by not being invited back to participate

this vs anything made in the last decade. all the hip hop shit and wannabees. vh was great music and great live performances. no other way to say it.

There are many ways to say it, and all are viewpoints based on ignorance.

They were unbeatable back then. I miss that Van Halen. Roth was too cool. I know age has something to do with it but did he have some bad plastic surgery?

I just got Fair Warning and VH2 today, holy shit do they kick ass.
And someone said Fair Warning
Lord will strike that poor boy down,
Turned from hunted into hunter
Went to hunt somebody down...

Harrison 77 you dont know shit! Get Van Halen 2 and put the right side speaker on only and listen to Light Up The Sky. There's no way Wolfie could ever rock the bass like Mike. DLR knows, but he don't wanna piss Eddie off.
happyjoe4ever 3 years ago 3
That's ROCK! Ed, dave and Al were insane! Mike just follows, we don't care about him, his playing was so basic, Wolf can easy do the the job...

if you actually LISTENED to this song you'd hear that when Eddie plays it straight, during the verses and final riff, Mike is actually throwing in all sorts of bass fills and licks. even during ed's solos, he's right there soloing away too with complementary bass lines. there's no way wolfie could ever play this well...hats off to you mike!!
blobo123 3 years ago 2
No Wolfie couldn't play this good!

DrumToy that might have been true then but its not true now as I was at this concert in the Oakland Arena and the recent one on December 22nd.
verderacer 4 years ago
Yeah, I hear whatcha sayin about them today verderacer, but my statement is strongly based upon this clip which is from the FAIR WARNING time period! I saw them twice @ THE STAPLES CENTER here in L.A. and it was truly a bitter sweet event!!! Im glad Eddie is having "father/son time, but I miss Mr. Michael Anthony ALOT!!!!
DRUMTOY2002 4 years ago
