  • This guy is an ex-girlfriend's ex boyfriend from the early eighties. I used to practice at a studio in his house in a town called Blackpool.

  • Gary 好きのギター弾きはやっぱり、

    皆スカッとしてて上手い!

  • any one notice, ( not in this video) he can sing better than Coverdale?

  • S

    !!!

  • esta mas para un comercial de shampoo que para tocar con Coverdale, horrible

  • Jon Sykes is too epic, Blue Murder far outweighed Whitesnake.

  • 3:25 did he broke his string???

    hahaha omgg

  • Sykes is about a thousand times better than John petrucci , Sykes plays with tons of emotion

  • john sykes is just the best guitar player ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i "physycally"! love him for he is one with his instrument and can take out the soul out of it making you cry, laugh, get horny,anything..AWESOME!!

  • @superbatfirenze You nailed it!!!

  • jimi hendrix 's soul jumped off when he died...and it landed in john sykes body, for he represents hendrix very emotional intentions with his playing....man! he cries with that guitar and he masturbates it at the same time...it's overwhelming,i love this man...

  • repetitive

  • 2:02-2:12 is he alternate picking all of that??? isnt that like freaking michael angelo batio speed if he is??

  • holy shit indeed :O:O:O:O:O:O (bow)

  • EPIC!

  • All i can say is holy shit!

  • More pinky!

  • crying in the rain!!!

  • PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DO THOSE @ 6:05

  • @rockhurstalum09 pluck a natural harmonic on an open string, then put pressure (push or pull) the string behind the nut. It's difficult but with practice you can get it. It has to be done on a guitar without a locking trem system. Hope this helps.

  • EPIC PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • brits rock!

  • Hard to believe this kind of silly wanksterism was the norm back then. What were we thinking? Talk about a lost decade.

  • is it me is there feedback coming at 0:07 ?

  • at 240p and John Sykes still sound fucking awesome!!! Sign of a God =)

  • @comebackus Actually, yes I am a guitar player of 30 years. I just meant my comment as a joke of sorts. As I said, I LOVE Sykes playing and look forward to more of his music. I never noticed the faces I make when I'm playing live until I saw video of myself. I actually got that comment I made from my buddy who took the video of my band playing. He said the same about me and thought it was hilarious when I saw it.

  • I can't wait to see Sykes with Mike Portnoy. That's going to be so epic!

  • John Sykes - the guitar master

  • picked trills...pentatonic runs...hardcore pinch harmonics.... I think I know who Zakk Wylde copied.

  • Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Sykes playing. But why does he always look like he's getting a prostate exam when he's playing? Looks painful.

  • John Sykes is so underated!!!

  • @kvkop No hes not. :P People who know off him all agree that his awesome. At least from my experiance off talking about him.

  • He doesnt use his pinky, like Reb Beach that doest use his pinky too...and they are still better than anyone here, Reb Beach is FUCKING awesome too...

  • Bass player is good too

  • I used to babysit for John. His wife paid quite well...

  • Oh, and they gave the drummer a solo spot too. And what do drummers play every time they have a solo? They start playing some super fast double bass things that audience loves of course. It's the same thing as shredding on guitar: Audience loves it and it's the easiest way to play a solo. I think the guitarists or drummers don't really think what they are going to play before their solo and that's another reason why they shred. I liked this solo a lot and like John Sykes too.

  • If you have a solo spot what else can you do than shred to entertain the audience. They want you to play that fast. If you start doing something extra prog random thing that sounds cool but you have to listen to it carefully the audience doesn't like it that much. Simple shredding is the way to go when you have a solo spot. And somebody said he is selfish. Well I think the band gave him the solo spot. That's where you show your skills. And when you play alone, shredding is the easiest way.

  • Sykes is back.....and will be more total war, total war moreeeeeee!!!!!!

  • Those are some nimble fingers

  • doug aldrich cant touch this shit this man is far too good!

  • wat is the guitar solo that starts 4.56?????? name of song??? brilliant

  • @katchymovies I think he wrote it for this solo spot, I don't think it was from any particular song

  • @fatgordon damn, wud make a good song dont you think?

  • @katchymovies Oh yes!

  • I can honestly say i am willing to go deaf to hearing from 1:26 all the way to 2:45... Like if i were to die listening to my mp3 player... That what i would want to be eternally looped into my hearing

  • Words fail me......=D Chills!!!! <3<3<3

  • No wonder why Coverdale fired him , John Sykes was always the star on the stage , he shone like a sun .

  • @jhonsykes1 jajajaja absolutely....

  • Gusto- Great Guitar Gem.

    Solo Soaring Splendour.

  • John and that guitar became one --- Metaphysically speaking.

  • Это не землянин-пришелец!!!!!

  • If you can't feel the passion in Syke's solo, you have no soul. One of the greatest ever.

  • i wish i could get back in 1985... time flies

  • John you are a God

  • 1norville u just go n suck viv balls..ur gay fucker..ur not fans of whitesnake,even

  • People on Youtube need to grow up and accept someones opinion. You do not have to agree. But cursing someone out over an opinion....Come on, get a life! I certainly don't think Coverdale is going to bury Sykes solos , compromising the quality of the record over jealousy or spite. Never the less get a better mentality than to curse someone out over their opinion. None of us are right all the time. We should be able to express our opinions on here without hateful retaliation.

  • @1norville oh i'm sorry if ur offended. but u know what? i still think ur either dumb or deaf to say "his solos are just fast and sloppy". ur right, none of us are right all the time but in this case, i know i'm right and ur wrong. thank you.

  • @1norville

Facts and opinions are not the same thing. You have forwarded some opinions as fact and misstated facts and feel that you can hide behind opinion.

Sorry guy but in both instances you are wrong.

John was buried on the 1987 album, when you listen to his earlier and later work that wasnt the case.

  • Do you even play guitar? Dio checked out Vivian Campbell and John Sykes. He picked Vivian Campbell! Because he liked his approach to playing solos. Vivian's solos on Holy Diver and The Last In Line are awesome!!! If you listen to John Sykes on the Still Of The Night cd, most of the solos are mixed at a low volume. This is because his solos are just fast and sloppy! Vivian is actually playing something with great articulation. Sykes has a very fast picking hand, but he is picking nothing special.

  • @1norville u dumbass LOL. sykes' solos on 1987 are buried after sykes got out of the band because coverdale was jealous. however he couldn't throw sykes' stuff away becauese it was too good. "just fast and sloppy" hahaha. who the fuck do u think ur talking about? do YOU even play guitar? go practice ur retarded ears first.

  • @1norville

John was never up for the Dio job, he never auditioned. He has commented on this story many times in the past.

Dio's first guitarist after leaving Sabbath was Jake E Lee, that didnt work and he went with Viv.

  • He's brilliant awesome

  • I mean the left hand is doing nothing special....Sorry I'm a left handed player!

  • I can see why Dio picked Vivian Campbell over John Sykes. He picks fast, but the right hand is doing nothing special.

  • @joe4316 Vivian Campbell,,for real ,,hahahaha LMAO !!!!!!!

  • didnt like it so much.i know he is great player ,and i know he could do it better.I like Doug s style and i prefer Doug s playing.

  • In my opinion Doug Aldrich is TOO worried about dexterity. John Sykes is PURE HEART. Sykes is a great guitar player!

  • Fuckin love his tone I would give anything to have it.

  • pity Sykes didn't get to tour on the 1987 Whitesnake album

  • John Sykes is up there with the best!

  • this is such a beast solo, who the fuck is steve vai? cause he is definitely not the best whitesnake guitarist

  • john sykes is amazing but in this video coverdale's singing is awful!!!

  • blond van halen

  • @ilmasticatore999 Eddie is great, but Sykes is in a league of his own. He played for legendary bands like Tygers of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy, before joining Whitesnake and making them famous. And then there is the matter of Zakk Wylde. No John Sykes, no Zakk Wylde, no bullshit.

  • What a great overlooked guitarist!

  • Just imagine the years of practice, practice, practice that preceded this onstage performance!

  • Ha ha... Silly 80's hairbands...

  • @ReiMonCoH

Ad hominem attacks...the weakest of all logical fallacies. Attacking the person rather than focusing on the point of the subject matter is intellectually banal.

Hairband or not, and at this time WS was still playing straight up 70's style hard rock, John Sykes was and still is an absolute beast.

  • Sh1t Hot! One of the UK's finest ever. I know from one of his previous band mates that back in those days he came into practise late, flipped his LP over rolled and smoked a 3 skin J before he even played a note. Legend.

  • Want to talk about underrated? This guy was before his time. I would put him up against any other guitar player. That Blue Murder album is a masterpiece. Valley of the Kings and Jellyroll are off the chain!

  • Mooo shhhiiiiiiiiitttt!!!!!!

  • LOL that should have been the album version.

  • O MY GOD!! I WAS THERE! THE BEST BAND ON ROCK N` RIO I.

  • 2:18 is when i started geting goosebumps....

  • george lynch, randy rhoads and john sykes. the bests of hard rock.

  • I'm a fan of John Sykes, Please could someone meda tablature that soil? It need not be crying in the raindoes not ,

  • this guy gets alot of poons for sure

  • Hole. Lee. Fuck.. ....What a AWESOME guitarist and musician. John Sykes just totally smokes.

  • this is what music should be thank the guitar gods for tallent like this

  • johny sykes is a terrorist

  • @fuckmegadeth what??

  • exactly the reason i should keep up the shredding!!

truly fucking inspiration Sykes is the man!

  • Master of Black Les Pual

  • Best guitar player of all time. If it weren't for him, Whitesnake would not be where they are today. His sound is very unique and the way he blends certain notes is just amazing! A lot of people can play guitar, but if the notes don't really blend together, it's useless noise. I hope to be as good a guitar player as he is someday.

  • @80smetalgal ..I'm with ya ...

  • @80smetalgal -of all time? not sure id go there, but i agree that hes a very good guitar player--unique sound and he gets alot out of the instrument........

  • @80smetalgal you have to get his awesome tone or create your own lol

  • @80smetalgal I agree, Sykes songs are "Is this Love", "here i go again".. the best guitar player in whitesnake!! thats my opinion

  • @80smetalgal

I don't know if he is the best, but I love the way he loves his guitar!

  • that's called making your guitar sing! god i love his string bends. they shriek!

  • Watch Zakk Wylde - he will shred on a Les Paul...

  • Love this guy. One of my heroes.

  • I don't care what any one else thinks. John sykes is a talented guy. To play consistenly for 9 or so minutes, he is amazing. He is brilliant in whitesnake, tygers of pan tang, thin lizzy, blue murder and his self named band john sykes. He may like being in the spotlight but he bloody well deserves it!!

  • 6:26 he fucked it up !!!

  • great!! nice vibrate!!

  • Some guys will feel like cutting me into pieces after what I say now: I cannot relate to that way of burning the fretboard. Back in 1983, when he was in Thin Lizzy I liked his playing, but then, he was kept in check by Phil Lynott and couldn't do that kind of self-display. Many parts of this (yawn) 9-minute-showing-off are pure fretboard wanking. I used to think myself that this was cool before I joined a band and found out that you've got to be a team player instead of a selfish speed king.

  • @Mompfried

Well, the people in Rio seemed to like it pretty well...and 99 other people.

So what if its fret board yanking...its skillful and entertaining fretboard yanking. This was back when every front man on guitar had to be able to stand out there for a few minutes on his won and let it all hang out.

So much unlike the 90s...when Guitar solos disappeared because popular musicians went for selling "radio" hits and ditched guitar solos (mostly because they couldnt play any).

  • @moshin68

Excess is always wrong, in both ways.

I speak as a guitarist, so don't blame me for this :D

I mean, the skills and the entertaiment are DEFINITELY there, no doubt bout that...

But I think you should play notes of one pound each instead of playing pounds of notes.

You have to give weight and relevance to what you're playing. Back in the 80s was quite difficult to find someone that didn't play TOO much and in the 90s it was the opposite, almost none played ENOUGH :S

  • A true master of his craft.

  • A true master of his craft

  • It's really too bad Coverdale fired Sykes before they really blew up. I would have liked to hear what Whitesnake would have been with him in the group. I guess Coverdale didn't want to have to share the stage with someone who commanded as much presence as John Sykes did. This was pretty impressive.

  • the early makings of the record solo. I am glad they changed up the backing section.

  • He does not let that pinky go very often

  • as i said before:LES PAUL OR DEATH:-))))

  • i like it when guitarists do the start off super slow and end up super fast bit then i can figure out all the cool licks

  • Hot! ^^ Oh, yeah, and nice guitar playing too XD

  • Erm... Is he using the pentatonic scale?

  • @CikaAndrej yep. and loads more...

  • @MrAnon78 Awesome, could you tell me what other scales is he using? :D

  • @CikaAndrej Yep. Most of his licks are parts of the "boxes"

  • Crying in the rain!

  • Very nice and yes Pata ;) We are X !

  • one of the best ever! gotta love it!

  • I want his hands.

  • John Sykes is King of the Guitar.

  • John Sykes, Gary moore, Rhandy Rhoads and Pata (x-japan) probably these guys are known for LP !

  • @nostalgiaholic777 doug aldrich, zakk wylde too

  • he is the definition of a rock guitarist... absolutely brilliant!

  • JOHN IS GOD

  • The begining is just tearing my heart apart

  • John is my favorite living guitarist. Criss Oliva is my biggest influence, but John Sykes and Dave Mustaine have had the next biggest impact on my rhythm and soloing.

I'm 19 and I love old metal and heavy rock, today's music blows.

  • Comment removed

  • no sweeping crap - simply dynamically and fast. damn awesome.

  • 2:00 he is jerking off really quick

  • And to think he also auditioned unsuccesful 4 ozzy b4 joining thin lizzy!

he has had an amazing career, just a bit shocked he doesn't get the credit he deserves?

epic solo tho. wonder what cryin in the rain on 87 album would of sounded like if this solo was put on it?!

  • I love solos that go nowhere.

  • I couldn't help but notice Coverdale's runny nose on stage, it's such a problem with these rock stars. Not sure why.

    {coke}

I could hear every guitar part done on the '87 WS record in this solo, and all the other guys (Vandenberg, etc.) in the videos were posing, in every sense of the word.

  • how the fuck is he getting those notes from behind the nut?!

  • @AndrewKapper23 To get the notes behind the nut u just pick a harmonic and bend the string behind the nut, works the same as pullin the tremolo out, increasing the pitch...

  • @AndrewKapper23 Probably pushing the strings very hard while doing harmonic squeal.

  • At 0:25 he looks like David St Hubbins.

  • love Sykes and love Coverdale.... heard that David fired John as he was getting a bit jealous of Sykes' attention

  • Sykes rocks!!!

  • If nothing else, he's the king of Agony Faces....

  • @jspartacus Ha ha yeah.... but you can tell he's really feeling every note of what he's playing---none of that strapping the guitar under his chin and staring at his fingers, stone faced like a current very popular guitarist whose name I won't mention.

  • john sykes has always been my favorite guitarist, and everytime i watch this it reminds me why. zakks good but sykes is one of the originators of this style and was playing like this a good ten years before anyone had even heard of zakk. gary moore and john sykes are the best imo :-)

  • @mooseface1983 john is 8 years older than zakk, so thats maybe why ;)

  • @JefferyWylde good point

  • wat songs this

  • Love his style

  • that was cool until coverdale opened his box. Sykes joined that band and fucking owned them.

  • No Brasil é chamado de o Príncipe do Rock.

  • Randy Rhoads, John Sykes, and Vivan Campbell have gotta be the best hard rock guitarists out there.

  • don't forget evh!

  • Never seen someone shred on a paul like that o__o"

  • @SpartnPride He's on of the best. Wylde, Slash, Page, Gary Moore....and Sykes!

  • @SpartnPride look up buckethead......... paul shredder master lol

  • @SpartnPride Al Di Meola or Gary Moore would be fantastic examples of guys who can "shred" like that on a Les Paul. Look up Gary Moore's "The Messiah Will Come".........the 10:12 second version or Al Di Meola "Race With The Devil/Jumping Jack Flash. Enjoy!

  • @SpartnPride You gotta check Buckethead man.. Take care!

  • @SpartnPride You ain't seen much then, brother. And i mean you no disrespect, but there are plenty of axemen out there, who shred the shit out of Les Paul - Zakk Wylde, Doug Aldrich (also from whitesnake) Buckethead (although I don't like that fucker).. there's a lot, I tell ya ;)

Just search for them, and enjoy the music ;)

  • @SpartnPride gary moore?

  • @SpartnPride Check out Doug Aldrich.

  • @adrianenduro doug aldrich? u mean sykes' henchman? lol just kidding. he's great too.

  • @sykes0925 sykes and doug have the greatest metal tone i have ever heard

  • @sykes0925 Reb Beach blows them away..... kidding lol

  • @SpartnPride oh yeah, u can shred on pretty much anything :)

  • @SpartnPride really? I present to you Mr Randy Rhoads
