I'm almost 22, so I never got to see the Baltimore Colts, but I've heard about how great they were, and I know what they mean to our city. Its great to see what memorial stadium was like then with the Colts playing on the O's infield. When I was 7, I saw the last season a game was played there when the Ravens played the Rams. The 1965 Colts were great on D, and the run, the same way the Ravens are now. Great to see that tradition continue.
I wish I could find further footage of the Western Conference playoff. I was 8 years old. While I remember earlier games, this is the first pro game I have vivid memories of. I had seen enough games to have a basic understanding of the rules by then. I remember asking my daddy, as time expired in the fourth quarter, "Is it just going to be a tie?" And he said, "No they'll play another quarter. The first team to score wins."
The Packers played twice in what Lombardi called the "Shit Bowl", the game in Miami between the 2nd place teams in either conference. "Shit" eventually became "Super" as the championship, like the consolation game, was moved to a neutral, warm weather location.
I'm not sure Tweeter. Worth checking out though. 1965 was my first year following football I was 8 yrs old. Dad was a Browns fan being from Ohio and rubbed it in about the 27-0 game the year before! But even he liked the heart the Colts showed that year. If that kick would have been called right and the Colts would have went on to win and then beat the Browns for the title I bet Tom Matte would be in the Hall of Fame along with his wristband!
@petegray44 You're probably right Pete. I too, like your dad was a Browns fan. I was 10 in 1965 and vividly recall watching the Colts-Packers playoff game on Sunday December 26, 1965 on our Black and white TV. I was rooting for the Colts because I wanted the Browns to repeat as NFL champions. I thought they would be easier to beat without Unitas and without Cuozo than were the powerful Packers. In retrospect, it would have been very tough for the Browns to beat the Colts twice in a row!
The only thing the Colts couldn't overcome in 1965 was the referee's bad call on the phantom field goal by Don Chandler of the Packers. EVEN CHANDLER thought he missed it! But it was called good and our season ended. Packers 13 Colts 10. What a shame! But anyway what a memory with Matte gutting it out with the plays on his wristband. That wristband is now in Canton in the Pro
@petegray44 Does any film footage of this game still exist? I've read that when Chandler returned to the sideline he was convinced he shanked ti and apologized to Lombardi for blowing the game. As the refs unbelievably called his kick good, Lombardi told Chandler to "shut up!" Most people who were there say he missed it wide right. It's a shame, because NFL History would have changed if the Colts had prevailed. You should have faced the Browns again for the 65 crown. I'm truly sorry.
@TheTweeter53 The goalposts were much shorter and on the goal line. What we see here is an illusion. Ray Scott, like the refs, had a dead on view of the kick and said it was good. Even so, it was so close that had a miss been called, we might not have a Lombardi trophy.
I have an old film reel of this if anyone is interested. 16mm film with sound and color, collectors edition. send me email csims2@ma.rr.com

Thanks for posting these videos so people can remember/learn about the Baltimore Colts and what they meant to the city visually.
