  • wow. this looks a lot different from my videos of the zoo in 2008, 40 years later.

  • Great vid!

  • It wasn't so much that the chimps have rights as it was discovered the Chimp Trainer was hurting/abusing them.

  • Comment removed

  • The signs said "Do Not Feed the Camels", people back then ignored the rules much like they do today!

  • The chimp show was my favorite. Of course apes(monkies to normal folk) have rights now, and are not to be made fun of.

  • Thanks a lot! I also remeber that we could ride the giant turtle, tourtise.

  • they use to let you feed the animals

  • I lived right across 8mi. Blvd. from the Zoo. Neighborhood kids could walk in for free through the exits. We always had ducks and the occasional peacock in the yard. We could hear the lions roar at night.

I still have my Zoo key that I got for sending my birthday to the B'wana Don Show.

Hmmm, I'll have to look that up now...

Anyone remember the grisly day-glo rabbit feet they sold there?

Puskies? Paul L Best School? Weber Nurseries?

  • Yeah but the mob started litterally feeding people to the animals and the zoo decided to change it's rules.

  • I still have my elephant key too !!! what I remember most is throwing fish to the seals that never ate them . Probably because they were over fed. And running from box to box with my siblings to see who could switch it on first. Not that we actually listened to what it said.

And I love older movies like that. you can add your own comments . See how fast it made that train seem like it was moving ? break neck speed.

  • ONE of those SWANs in this Video BIT Me. Was in 1969 a SWAN BIT ME thru the Cyclone Fence !!!

Almost took my Finger off - I was 3 and I still remember it to this Day. I lived less 1/2 mile from the Detroit Zoo and we had a in ground pool in our backyard. The Ducks would come from the Zoo and stay and swim in our pool. Not just a few but 50 or so at any given morning. Was a Pain for my DAD but I loved it !!!

  • I grew up less than a mile from the zoo, my parents took us all the time before I could recall, Mid to late 60's ..I remember when I was 3, 4 yrs old I had a elephant key ..to put in an audio box to hear facts about the animals..wow how time has changed. I remember the Chimp house and the shows ..always felt it was inhumane even when I was a little kid ..hmm

  • I still have my elephant key !!!!!

  • I remember the camels would come up to the wall and you could feed them,,this was in the early 80's..always a good time.

  • this truely is, ive been going here since i was a young kid. this place means a lot, they almost shut it down, i woulda died.

  • its sad they stopped the state fair

  • at first i was like "wtf" and then i looked it up and its TRUE - the state fair which just recently ended its 11 day run might have been its last (and an end to its 161 year run.) - man, all becuz granholm doesnt deem it worthy of bail outs - oh but the BANKERS are????? its another way they are DISCONNECTING the masses from NATURE - to get them more ingrained in the system of control (and credit) we are all slaves too.

it is sad - and its final UNLESS some one can save it by next year.

  • That is granholms fault. she messed up everything since she has been governer
