  • Dumbass its called muscle contraction. You obviously have never seen an animal after it dies. Muscles can stay active for hours even after cerebral activity has ceased. So no, the fish is dead but their muscles continue to move. Just like if you remove an organ out of a human for transplant aka a heart, that heart will continue to beat even though the person you took the heart out of is dead. Pick up a book before you pass judgement.

  • @drksyde72 well its the fact that its not dead and being tortured is what gets to people. like cows, chicken and a lot of fish are usually killed first then taken apart...from my standpoint, it made no logical sense to fabricate a fish thats alive, doesn't make the fish taste better and a fish moving like that while handling a saw knife is a safety risk. i work in a kitchen and good chefs always respect their product. this video however was practiced wrong imho

  • @quakov Yes it does taste better, trust me, i have taken my propane fryer fishing with me many times and trust me the fresher the fish, the better it tastes, and u cant get any fresher than this. As for him cleaning it while it was still alive, whats the difference, he put the fish out of its misery. The fish is out of water, should he have waited for half an hour til the fish suffocated? You know that the moving was not voluntary, it was the nerves , the fish is dead1

    I didn't mean to be overly critical about the way that fish was being fileted, just wanted others to know there were bones in it so they wouldn't choke. To each his own.

    I catch enough redfish to go through about 2-3 filet knifes per year, that is until this year. I bought an american angler and have not killed the gears yet. I just replaced the blades twice and it still runs.

  • There is nothing wrong with a little bit of blood on the fillet. Just wash it thoroughly after you fillet it. Stick it in a bag, fill it halfway with water, squeeze out the air and ziplock it. The reason there was excess blood on it is because it was still alive when being filleted.

    I've never been a fan of the electric filleting knifes because I hear too many complaints about it so I just use a big fillet knife!

  • dude ..that is exactly how I fillet red fish..I live in San Antonio, Tx. ..we have two fresh water lakes called Calaveras and Braunig lakes..they are stocked with fingerling reds and hybrid striped bass every year..I carry a small set of pliers to remove the half dozen or so rib bones that I miss up near the thick part of the fillet..do you have any recipes you want to share?

  • This has got be to one of the funniest threads I have seen yet. GREAT job cutting up that fish. Fileting (sp?) at the dock is kind of like building fire with a bunch of guys standing around with nothing to do EVERY SINGLE one of them will have a suggestion on how to do it better. Anyone who wants to clean my fish is welcome to do it however they see fit! If you are afraid of the bones, have your mom pick em out. For all that were offended - you are not invited over for the fish fry.

  • Someone said the electric knife was made by American Angler but we just recently purchased an American Angler electric knife and had difficulty with the redfish because of the toughness of the skin and the scales, does anyone know what specific knife it is because it looks longer and thinner than the one we purchased.

  • That is a good technique, but you lost some good meat near the head section by not starting at the top of the head and cutting close to the fins.

  • I would save the scrap for crab bait or fertilizer.

  • Great technique, thats the way I do it. Dont know if you know it or not, but when you cut the stomach out if you would cut more of angle into the fillet you will 99% of the bones out. Also what brand electric fillet knife is that, I need to get me one.

  • Oh my goodness! Someone is going to choke on all the stomach bones you are leaving in that fish. You need to cut up higher than the midline of the fish where the stomach is to get all of the bones.
