I've seen them sing this, with Ronan, I always wondered why they didn't use three part harmony in the chorus, same with some other songs ,but always great anyway!

During the Famine, an Editorial in the English Morning Times stated " The Celts are going, going with a vengeance. Very soon, an Irishman will be as scarce on the banks of the Shannon as an Indian on the Banks of the Potomac. To-day, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Morning Times is gone and we are still here!!!!!
@liamthedream Consider the import of that statement, even in the 1840's the elite British opinion was aware of the displacement and diminution of Native Americans.
FWIW, I have no Irish ancestry, and yet the beauty and poignancy of this piece reaches/grabs deep. VERY deep. It's a wonder no one has made a movie around it. The Irish Tenors themselves make the piece even better. I don't get jealous of other men re: cars, money, possessions, looks, girls, or anything else - except for pipes. I sure wish I could sing like the IT's.
Sorry about the delayed answer. I THINK you asked who, IMO, should direct a movie based on this song. Hard question. Ummm, a director who can handle a project w/reverence. Edward Zwick, who helmed Glory. Alan Parker, who helmed The Commitments. With some thought, I'm sure other folx could come up w/good suggestions. Who would you like to see helm this movie?
Most Irish music touches my soul...have been there twice, would go back again in a heartbeat....and the lovely scenes with this video make me miss it!
I can hardly sing this one without bursting into tears...and I don't even relate all that much to my Irish heritage. Maybe this proves it's 'in there." Thank you for the best, emotional version of this lovely, sad song.
Well, here it is 10:30 p.m. and I am once again listening to this addictive music, and fantastic video. Can't get enough ..I think I need 'rehab' to break my obsession with this awesome piece of music and accompanying film.! Wow
"The Fields of Athenry" was written in the 1970s by Pete St. John. A claim was made in 1996 that a broadsheet ballad published in the 1880s had similar words; however folklorist and researcher John Moulden found no basis to this claim, and Pete St. John has stated definitively that he wrote the words as well as the music.
The song was first recorded in 1979 by Danny Doyle. The most successful version was released by Paddy Reilly in 1983.
