She was an an accomplished classical concert pianist, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London. See "Winifred Atwell - Chopin: Fantasie-Impromptu"
Winifred Atwell came from Trinidad in the West Indies. She was classically trained and was famous in the UK in the 1950s. She recorded classical pieces as well as on her other 'honky tonk 'piano. One of my favourites was Poor People of Paris. She died in Australia in the 1980s.
To add to this info on Ms Atwell she actually discovered Matt Monro the English singer who sang the theme song born free from the movie of the same name which became his signature song , Ms Atwell was his mentor and she actually gave him his stage name he was actually born Terence Parsons, with her help he was able to sign to decca Records
I would love to own this album, but it was never issued in the UK. Although I have recently managed to buy an LP from Australia called "Winifred Atwell" which is a complete change from Winnie's usual style - all chromatic scales and sweeping melodies - an education. You probably know of it Mike.
Marvellous, thanks. I remember Ms Atwell with a great deal of affectioin from the '50's, but never saw or heard her play with a pan band before.

Beautiful rendition by a great classical pianist on her "other" piano.
Thank you for sharing this fine post.
