I've always been a Citroen/Peugeot fan because traditionally they've made the best drivers cars in the "hot hatch" segment however when I was looking for a cheep semi sporty run-a-round I looked at Saxo vtr&vts's which are brilliant to drive but finding a non abused model proved near impossible and I never got on with the offset driving position so I tested a C2 vts but I found it a little numb and although it was powerful enough to be enjoyable it had little low down torque and so it felt...

...fact I liked it so much that it's now my vehicle of choice over my much loved KTM duke motorcycle. I will concede that the Saxo is the superior drivers car, offers more feedback on all roads and faster cornering on bumpy roads (it's also more reliable) but the Sportka has the better gearbox, superior handling on smooth roads, better driving position and although ultimately less reliable it's still a simple tough little car (plus ford parts are cheap)...
...As for the the C2 vts? well it's ultimately the faster car on the straights and on paper it's quicker, more economical and safer but they also suffer from a myriad of electrical and mechanical faults plus it's just too numb to be an enjoyable drive.
Very helpful video - I think this is why Fifth Gear always has a place on tv, if this was Top Gear (although it is impossibly funny and entertaining) then by 2:50 Jeremy Clarkson would have blown up both the C2 and Street Ka with a cannon salvaged from the Bismark, and recommeded you to by a Veyron instead.
hardly a victory for the C2, as some else has said 0.5 of a time difference is nothing.
The fact the C2 and more HP and Torque and can only achieve a difference if 0.5 it proves how good the SportKa is.
As the other person said if the SportKa were to have the same HP and Torque as the C2, the Sportka would cross the line 1.0 - 1.08 quicker than the C2.
Again hardly much of difference but last least it will be a a full second or greater rather than a few 10th of a seceonds
Stop moaning about the gt having 15 more bhp then the SportKa.
At the end of the day, A sportKa is a girls hairdressers cars, They are ugly as fuck, And with your youtube name as "RSTBADBOY" that really makes sense.
C2 GT is a nicer looking car, Better for tuning and more sporty, At least in the c2 you dont look like a cock like u do in the SportKa
This "competition" seemes to be a rubbish. If you have a driving experience you can easily see that the cars were purposely driven in a different manner.
he talks shit i have a c2 it is actually brillant.... the streering on it is great it very responsive the breaks are great they have stopped me befor i have hit any other car the break assit helps a hell of alot if you think your going into the back of someone lol i would know, its a car well worth getting ..... the KA women wont even drive it lol i have only seen max 5 KA's around my area and they have all been old biddies driving them unless ford are look at the old gen to buy them lol
My comment was with regards to sportKA been faster than the C2, which it is.
As for the VTS obviously its quicker, BUT if you mod even a standard Ka with the puma engine it will piss on the VTS.
Infact if you take into consideration power to weight ratio, you would not even need a the puma engine just something a tad more powerful as the Ka is considerablly lighter!
The Citroen might have been quicker but the Sportka looked a lot more composed - I know which one I'd rather drive fast on a public road. Not that either of them is particularly fast, but both are fast enough to be fun.
If you look at the way the cars go through the corners without knowing the times you'd swear the Ka was quicker, but then Citroen provided a car to give away, so it was just as well it won ;-)
Good Video. I prefer the C2 GT over the Sportka, Simply on Looks. Although as someone else has quoted, Ford Probably should have used the Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 16v Engine in there, Instead of the 8v.
For the sportie version I'd choose the Ford. For an ordinary supermini, I'd go for the Citroen. Anyway I always thought the C1 was more the equivalent size of a Ka. I guess it wouldn't catch on to sell a C1 with a sports badge on it. The C2 has a sporty feel regardless, and is more the boy racer car that replaced the Saxo.
had my GT for about a year now. just to put the arguement about the GT and the VTR to bed, they are different cars, the GT has a smaller water bottle and a lighter gear box, it dosnt have a spare tyre and dosnt have the fog lamps, which all means it alot lighter than the VTR. the GT also has shorter gear ratios and has more torque than the VTR. the GT is faster than the VTR aswell.
have had my c2 gt (no.0086) for nearly 3 years now, and have loved every minute of driving it....does turn heads when its just been washed and polished aswell!
Yet more flawed logic to reach your conclusion. Power output isn't the deciding factor in a car's performance. The GT and VTR are two different cars, so your point is moot.
Power, weight and handling as most people know are deciding factors. Evidently POWER was the deciding factor in the above race!! (so much for your so-called "flawed logic"). So once again i reiterate, my VTR will cane the crap out of the Ford KA if driven by the same driver. Perhaps you've forgotten who the winner in the video above was....It was the C2 GT. Apart from the paddle-shift gearbox, foglamps and a few ounces worth of extra spoilers, the VTR & GT "ARE THE SAME CAR". Goodday
Power? Yet more simplistic crap on your part. How about torque curves, gear ratios, weight distribution, rate of weight transfer and all the other things you ignore? Oh, and half a second is hardly 'caning the crap' out of anything. You'll grow up one day...
shocking how? I'm in Canada so sadly the sportka wasn't an option for me. We are glaringly missing any subcompact sport hatch! MPS 3 is the sweet alternative but as far as fuel mileage is concerned I'm sure I couldn't touch the sportka
Yeah the SportKa is easily the bigger hoot to drive. But what were Ford thinking with putting THAT miserable 1.6 litre SINGLE over head cam, 8valve engine in it??? They could have done a much better job engine wise. For example the 1.6 VVT engine from the Focus, which would have given it the same power as the C2...and would have allowed it to woop it!
There are other considerations. Pedstrian safety laws etc... which is why Ford could not do it. If they could have used a different engine, they would have done. It would have saved them money. I think Ford probably know their business better than we know it.
I think your right gromit37. This came up in something I ready a long time ago when the Ka was still a reltively new car. The Zetec 16valve engines from the Fiesta (1.25, 1.4 and 1.6). Doh! Have you seen the new Ka :-)
I don't think so. It was never meant to be anything other than a city car, and over 90% of it's torque is available from around 1500rpm. There's far more to driving than horsepower... handling and roadholding. And that's where the Sportka is loads of fun, on tight, twisty roads. Lots of grip, little body roll, responsive engine and communicative steering. For less than £10k. Why not put a VTS against a Fiesta ST, Corsa VXR or a Mini Cooper and see which looks embarassed then.
As I said, there's more to driving than horsepower. If all you're interested in is 0-60mph acceleration, buy a Caterham or 2nd hand Elise. If it's pure speed you want, then unless you have a Veyron, you'll never be happy. Put the VXR, ST and VTR on a track and see what happens, see which is most *fun*. That's what driving should be. FUN.
gromit37 you have it in a nut shell!Ford ALWAYS make their cars fun to drive. The current Fiseta ST is getting a bit old, but despite its age, no other car maker has managed to make a such a fun handling supermini. The same story is for the SportKa. Also, glennjames, a Fiesta ST, if the driver is doing the job properly, will easily beet a VTR off the line, round the cornor, and into the distance. At least the Ford's won't brake down all the time, unlike the Citroen with their dreadful reliability.
The normal Ka is the city car, this one is the "performance" one.The ST has a 2 litre engine, the VTS has a 1.6 as does the Ka.All are naturally aspirated so comparing them to the Corsa VXR is unfair. The VTS is also faster than a Cooper.A Cooper S would easily beat the Citroen though.Top Gear tested the ST vs. the VTS and the ST won around their track so I'll concede that the ST is faster.
If a GT can beat a SportKa round a track, a VTS will have no problem. You really can't argue with that. :-/

my response is talking in general not with regards to the cars in question....
25hp is not much extra power, if the least powerful car was significantly lighter they would probably be on par!
The new models of small cars e.g. Ka, Fiesta, Twing, Clio, Corsa, Micra etc are so much heavier than their the previous models yet have the same power output!
If you get a new models of these cars you need a minimum of 1.6 engine !

5th gear do not seem to use the same track for their tests.
However these two are definately on the same track:
Clivic Type R - 54.29 VS Clio 182 - 54.49
C2 GT - 56.5 VS Sportka - 57.0
Price against Performance and Handling you're better off with the C2 GT or Sportka!
Different at the finish-line (perhaps alterations have occured!) but the times would suggest same track as the above VS!
Fiesta ST - 55.3.09 VS Colt CZT - 56.6.0

@mcrrulez124
Firstly let’s eliminate the 'girly' stereotyping:
Ka; a car that can be ragged about, thrown in tight and fast into and out of corners is not girly!
E.g. a standard chassis model Golf you simply cannot drive as described above you'd lose the backend and crash and therefore it’s girly!
This whole stereotype comment is simply based on looks, I agree that rear curve on the KA is ugly but do not judge a car by its body/shell!
678jasper678 1 year ago
@mcrrulez124
Who cares about the extra smidgen of HP and Torque that the C2 GT has over the sportKA.
0.5 of a second means the C2 GT desperately needs the extra power due to weight and possibly due to its not as well tweaked chassis.
I'd take the sportKA due to its chassis and better handling.

I honestly think the sportKA could even nail the C2. sportKA is a much better handling car.
Agreed, the sportKA has a better chassis and owns the C2 on the corners.
C2 clawed back/overtook on the straight sections due to the extra 15bhp.
So if the sportKA had the extra 15bhp it would certainly beat the C2.

Ford ditched Th!nk don't forget, and Citroen knows better than to try to sell cars to a nation that couldn't pronounce its name.
We're a full year into the 'fuel over $3 per gal' thing here, and GM is STILL selling Hummers because people are still buying them.
