What a truly gifted player Waddle was - why does the sport of football no longer produce genial players like Waddle, Gazza & Hoddle anymore?
It was unfortunate that players like Hoddle & Barnes who were useless for England, and to a lesser extend Gazza and Waddle who were inconsistent for England, were unable to fully replicate club form for England.
Not a spurs fan but Hoddle and Waddle were some of the last truly technically gifted English players. The fact that our national team never got the best out of them along with John Barnes and Gazza gives you an idea about what the top brass in this country think about football development.
Mon idole quand j'étais minot , j'avais la même coupe de cheveux !! c'est drôle parce que plus tard tony vairelles avait la même coupe mais c'était moins classe !!LOL
Does anybody know the name of the music played in this video? The "industrial sound" at the start is amazing. I especially like the transition to piano piece played at 3:05. Also, does anybody have the footage of the World Cup game Waddle played in the 1990 match between Holland and England? There was a move I would like to see again where he sprinted toward an oposing player leaning left, then pitched his lean right and then left again. I cannot find that run, modest as it might be.
Shame he never got the reconition that he deserved, he will always be mostly remembered for the penalty miss. Truly great talent. That Parsnip Taylor who left him out of the England squad in he's best years show how much English managers seem to turn there back on great skill, Even Carlton Palmer got more Caps than him during Taylors realm.
sa c'était un monstre de joueur qui te faisait réver a chaque fois qu'il touchais le ballon merci MR WADDLE de m'avoir fait réver comme tu sait le faire
One of the best English midfield players i've seen in my lifetime along with Gazza and Hoddle.
The best dribbler i've witnessed and also the most two-footed player I've ever seen, could hit dead balls with the inside AND outside of either foot with great accuracy, no current player in the Premiership has that ability.
Not one of the current English midfield are fit to clean or lace Waddle's boots.
Imagine Lampard, Beckham & Gerrard combined and they still don't come close to Waddle in any way.
@MisterHockey i never saw him play butmy dad said that waddle once said his brother was always a better player than him (when talking about how there are so many good players who never make it and that for some people it is probably just luck)
But a part of me is now thinking maybe he said that to support his brogther try and get him noticed or something?
Lampard & Gerrard are England's best midfield players today. The comment is basically saying that neither of them or in fact any of the current England midfield come close to the kind of ability that players like Waddle had in any way.
Plus when called upon, Waddle played central midfield too & could do it better than any of England's current players.
He was a better passer & had far better vision than Gerrard & Lampard.
@MisterHockey he's a better dribbler, that's about it. I sort of waddle into this video after searching for the term Donald Duck, i don't know why lol, but it kinda shock me that there's a Englishman that actually understood the basic fundamentals of Football ---> Dribbling.
@MisterHockey you must be abosulutely ignorant of everything gerrard is and does. just coz he plays shit for england means nothing, watch this youtube.com/watch?v=OWNVy6mStjc and you'll see just how immense gerrard really is.
(and btw, recently he has been englands only hope, and scored two beutiful goals in euro qualifiers, and is a natural born leader)
I never said Gerrard wasn't a good player because he is good & does some good work when his heads in the game & i know exactly what he does & what his level of ability is.
But the whole comment base and discussion in this video was how England's midfield misses great players like Waddle, Hoddle, Gazza, Barnes etc... all of which were obviously far better than Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Barry etc...
well what i was saying is that i thinkk gerrard should be amongst those names. i agree that all the other england midfieldiers of this era, are substandard compared with the likes of Waddle, Barnes etc, but i think Gerrard should be mentioned in the same way. the only problem for gerrard, is that he is playing with a lot of crap players around him. but from an individual point of view, i think he is just as good, if not better than many of the englad greats.
For me, I honestly don't think Gerrard could be named as an all time great (yet, maybe when he retires he will have done more and enough though, time will tell if he can reach that echelon or not)
But that's just my opinion, some may agree and some may not.
I do feel Liverpool made a huge mistake by selling their best MF player (Alonso) as he helped Gerrard out immensely.
It's a shame there isn't more footage on you tube of his Tottenham and England days. His style was unique. The lazy, loping dribbles, the improvisation, the nutmegs, the stepovers. I remember one England game at Wembley where he just toyed with whatever johnny foreigner left back was playing for the opposition. So they tried double marking him in the second half. He took the challenge and made them look twice as stupid. Great great player.
You Gotta be kidding, He played every position for Tottenham apart from in goals, He played right back, left back, centreback, centre midfield and left midfield for England, Was an international player from 1982 to 1992, Captain for Spurs, Played although he was a dire Diabetic and was rock solid and respected by everyone as a pure professional..Although he wasn't the most gifted player, He was certainly the most solid player Spurs had since Steve Perryman, So you are talking out of your arse.
aah le grand OM : Waddle, JPP, Abedi Pelé, Boli, Mozer et toute la clique...Depuis cette équipe, le néant ou presque...

Chris was always extremely modest, but usually very honest too so he most likely thought his brother actually was better than him.
Sometimes it is just a case of right place, right time when it comes to scouts and being signed up mate.

@MisterHockey how can you compare Waddle to Lampard and Gerrard? It's stupid, completely different players.

@p1rha not stupid in the slightest mate.

@strongbadassman yeah, his dribbling was amazing.
But for passing, shooting, vision and having a football brain, trust me, Waddle was also head and shoulders above the likes of Gerrard :-)
Back in the late 80s and early 90s our midfield players were just so superior to today's squad it isn't even funny lol.
But most importantly, he sported a mullet whilst being one of the world's greatest footballers. If that doesn't say class, nothing does!!!
MisterHockey 1 year ago 5
@p1rha Yep. Waddle was a better player than both of these combined. How England could do with him now.
