@MrJNScott Hank's music defined country. He was one of the most amazing poets that ever lived... and to think of the body of work he left behind at the age of 29 is nothing short of amazing.
@bobdy9988 u forgot about his nasal cavities caving in and also falling on his face. Look at him as younger guy and then in last 20 yrs he doesn' t look the same person despite obvious aging from drugs ,etc.
Well, commenting on the results of such self-abuse and recognizing that it is not worth the trouble is important, if only to stop others of such madness. We all love Keith but I doubt even he would approve of his past behaviour. Hopefully he's grown up...maybe just a little.
@911SMOM Ah huh... I've seen that. Everyone has read that crap, standing in line at the grocery store! lolol I just wonder if you actually believe it. Do you believe Elvis is alive too? How about Michael Jackson?? lolololo
Elvis Presley was the greatest singer and stylist that ever walked the planet , his fashion is being copied all the time , his music is still influencing the kids of today ..the legend that is ELVIS PRESLEY is still capturing the kids now as it did in the 1950's which highlights the fact that Elvis is timeless and unbeatable .
There is not a single act on the planet that can hold a light to Elvis Presleys achivements in the history of the music industry.
To all: Elvis laid the foundation what is now known as POP music. NOT Michael Jackson invented or had anything to do with this. What Michael Jackson did,was done years before already by Elvis. Elvis was the #1 artist to sing 'black' songs in a time when the KKK and middle-America hated blacks and their music. Elvis was then called that hillbilly cat with that nigger music!
Elvis always defended his choice for beeing inspired by black artists like BB King,James Brown etc.
@iRuubje BB King once said in a Rolling Stone interview that Elvis was the best Blues singer he ever heard, and when Elvis got on a Blues song, there were none better. James Brown was inspired by Elvis, not Elvis was inspired by James Brown, who said in an interview that he was grateful to Elvis for opening up doors for Black Artist in the 50's and 60's. Elvis was responsible for many acts getting their start, Johnny Rivers, Mac Davis, and Ronnie Milsap to name a few.
Keith is the man--period. He keeps it very, very, very real. I always thought that was the reason so many people put him down--because he made them think--and a lot of folks do NOT like to think! Keith--stay with us for at least another 60 something years--please!!!
I find his take on Sun recordings to be very revealing. Also, his comments on the inside of how studios do things today and how it was done in the late '50's is wonderfull.
@beeroosterm He probably looks a bit strange because he's not botoxed to hell and back. I think he looks like a real person you might see in the street. I have a friend who even called him beautiful/ugly. I can see that. I think there is a LOT more to this man than what he looks like.
How can you not like the Stones? If you don't like The Rolling Stones then you flat-out do not like Rock n' Roll. And if you do not like Rock n' Roll, then you pretty much shouldn't like most music in general, because Rock n' Roll has had direct and indirect influence on most music, of any genre, PERIOD. That is a plain and simple fact.
i heard he wants to go on tour w/o Keith, because he didn't like Keith's book, Life. i haven't finished the book, but would not see Jagger w/o Keith. & I'm a huge Stones fan. why can't they get along?
Mick J. had solo albums that Keith rightly said took away from the Stones. Doesn't Mick get enough attention as frontman???
@jettvallon Mick kept the band together when Keith was a zombie junkie for ten straight years. It takes alot to crack the whip and run the Stones monster; Mick had to be tough and take alot of shit from alot of nobodies.
Some posters mention why Elvis never met up with the Stones criss-crossing the USA. But that is left to fate. The logistics are enormous. Had Presley been left to his own devices & the Colonel didn't have an influence Presley probably would have met & played with many great musicians. Elvis did talk with Frank Zappa once. Zappa suggested Elvis play roadie for Zappa's band -- to see if anyone would notice Elvis setting up equipment. Presley said yes. Colonel said no. That would have been great.
@Za7a7aZ - He's a pro who loves what he does. i've asked that question myself. i've heard from people "in the know" in nyc, that someone else played his parts on the last tour. i don't believe it for an instant. most people would have "hung it up" w/ a condition like that. he just keeps keeping on. although, if things were "ok" w/ KR they would have toured behind the re-release of "Exile", 4 sure. so i have doubt that they will be out again. i'd love to see 'em one more time.
you wanna take the tap root deeper? sure elvis had the sound & soaked up all the gospel & blues around him. but rock a billy's earliest roots come also from the man who died in the back of a rocknroll car 6 months before elvis' 1st record for his mama.. if the interviewer had been sharp enough to ask, keith probaly wouldve agreed. dylan surely would. hank williams was the first to merge blues, high lonesome country into the first strains of rock a billy. & elvis soaked him up also like a sponge.

@lastrada52 I don't respect elvis at all! elvis was totally influenced by black southern artists like johnny Ace and big momma thornton. elvis had a lot of black soul and swagger and seeing a whiteboy doing that was a big part of his novelty! He didnt write nor produce any of his music and thats why musically he wasn't relevant after he went to the army! Buddy holly, chuck berry and fats domino are light years better than elvis!
@mauricetaylorII - What you imply: because Elvis was "influenced by black southern artists" he was a novelty. So, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, the Stones, Eric Clapton & countless others would also be guilty of this. They were all influenced by black southern artists. Tiny Tim is a novelty. Tom Jones, Johnny Cash -- not known for writing their own material or producing either. Not relevant? Go back to before 1956 & listen to that music. All artists you list ADMIRED Elvis Presley. No respect?
@lastrada52 elvis was caricature after returning from the army! he made crap music and crap movies through out the 60's that's why he was OVERLAPPED in popularity! novelty was the wrong word. chuck berry was INFINITELY more talented than elvis and had Chuck berry been white his popularity wouldve KILLED elvis' white america had never seen a white man and dance like that. blacks saw that a dime a dozen that is what i'm referring to as the novelty
@mauricetaylorII - You make some good points maurice but Chuck had a good run of hits, purchased primarily by a white record buying audience -- he had his opportunity & he's still at it today. But despite your opinion of Elvis, why is it James Brown, Chuck Berry, Rufus Thomas, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ray Charles, Cissy Houston, many black gospel singers & many other major black artists sing the praises of Elvis Presley? Why? They aren't idiots. Maybe they hear or see something you're missing?
@lastrada52 Chuck had people who WOULDN'T buy his records nor let him play in venues because of the color his skin! Believe me and Chuck has said it as well that barrier hurt his sales and overall popularity.
@mauricetaylorII - maurice, Chuck was arrogant & problematic for promoters. He still is. He wrote, sang & played classic R&R tunes & "Maybelline" sold over a million, but at near 30 years old - he was too old to attract teens compared to a 21 year old, charismatic, good looking, rebellious & talented Elvis. Little Richard & Fats Domino had national hits. Chuck Berry hurt Chuck Berry's sales and Chess was a major label at the time. He never lost the respect of musicians or fell out of style.
@mauricetaylorII - Your comment to sternelvis -- where is the proof The Beatles were a "bigger influence" than Elvis globally? Substantiate it. Don't forget it's The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, Otis Redding (yeah, him too), who said they took their cue from seeing & hearing Elvis in the 50's. What you might be talking about is popularity, not influence. This explains why Keith Richards & John Lennon were influenced by Elvis but their fans may have dismissed him. But that's not true anymore.
@lastrada52 The Beatles changed and influenced the sound and look of almost every artist that came after them. Writing their own material. How many bands in the 60's & 70's mimicked The Beatles? Are you serious? John has always said he and Paul were more influenced by Buddy Holly because like them he was a singer/songwriter. Seeing Elvis on tv made them want to become rock & roll singers but the music Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers had a MUCH bigger influence on their sound than elvis.
@mauricetaylorII - Valid points but for me to respond effectively I'd need more YouTube space. Who each influenced is not something that can be accurately measured & you'd have to throw in James Brown & Dylan also. Elvis: he was influenced also by Dean Martin & Billy Eckstein (most people today don't even know Billy). Beatles': you had 4 different guys in that band maurice -- all influenced by different sources. Holly, Everlys, yes. Presley too. Early pics of Beatles show an Elvis look.
@mauricetaylorII Elvis had more of an impact on the world than any other entertainer. Of course he was influenced by black artist, as well as white artists. If you compare his recordings of "black artist" tunes to the originals they are miles apart. What Elvis did was take the styles of black musicians and white musicians like country and hillbilly, and make them one. Which we call Rock and Roll. Elvis didn't see color like you. Music is music and it's not colored blind.
@lastrada52 The thing I don't get about "Elvis", it was just his voice. No guitar playing, no song writing,,, just his voice and one large marketing plan.
When I heard about him abusing his staff as punching bags so his ego can feel like a big bad karate boy, he lost any respect I had for him. This was before he died by the way. His "black belt" fades to white.
@SlackerSlayer - 1st: Everyone's entitled to their opinion & not everyone is going to like Elvis. That's OK. But, if the reason you don't like Elvis is: he doesn't play guitar (he did play rhythm & piano)/ write songs, then add Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Marvin Gaye etc...Marketing? In the 50's? Elvis' mktg was Col Parker. That's it. Mktg rock started after The Beatles because it became a billion $ industry ELVIS started. You "heard about him" being abusive? Opinions of others? And you believe it?
@lastrada52 It was actually a law suit back in the day I heard of his abuse toward his hired peons. So he wants to learn martial art,,, and missed the main principle behind it. I did not mean to step on your love.
@SlackerSlayer - If you become famous like Elvis everyone wants to sue you SlackerS. It comes with the territory -- even today. No one ever proved Elvis was abusive. Elvis started his martial arts back in '59 in the US Army. Chuck Norris said he was one of the best & that's good enough for me. There are NO reports of Elvis assaulting anyone in his employ. I am not a fan of Elvis' nor do I love him -- I'm just someone who covers the music industry & I certainly do respect the man.
@lastrada52 There is always the one case that is true. I respect those that deserve it, not because they have a lot of cash. Anyone that uses full force on a "friendly" spar is a complete jerk and should face assault charges.
@SlackerSlayer - "The one case that is true." One? I fought years ago, & I know even in sparring you're going to let go with some solid shots. Come on Slacker - one case - could that be where Elvis' opponent tested him and Elvis had to defend himself? There's always that jerk, as you said, that uses full force. Usually it's the sparring partner who wants to score some points for the ladies or his friends who are watching. You don't think someone would do that to an Elvis? I bet you would.
@lastrada52 It was a figure of speech. Where there's smoke there's fire.
You do bring up another example of good vs bad, and figure of speech(es). Remember the feel good movie karate kid? Which instructor taught the good way and who taught the dirty way. Your Elvie took the wrong way if he thought it was funny or whatever induced his strategy, to strike blows against someone that thought if he fought back he would be fired.
@SlackerSlayer - Elvis -- a "bad sport" or abusive opponent are what? A consistent behavior or just one episode -- 1 person's word against Elvis? SlackerS., we didn't witness it. So it's speculation. Elvis had a temper, he was no saint - but, Bobby Brown's arrested for striking Whitney Houston had an arrest record. It never affected their careers. So why be preoccupied with an alleged Elvis episode? I hope you didn't get your info from that inaccurate, dreadful Albert Goldman book.
@SlackerSlayer - OK a small group of voices. But any celebrity Slacker is going to come under fire by these types of people. If there's reason to believe he did these things -- I still think it's very small compared to allegations levied against celebrities such as Michael Jackson's. His accusations were heavy duty compared to this. Yet, there are people who believe he didn't do what he was accused of. In some respects, it includes me. You have to give the person the benefit of the doubt. Yes?
The face of a Rock n Roll Guitarist after 40 years of Drink,Drugs,Cigs,Women and not enough Love, and all of that and hes not even in the top 10 of Great Rocker Guitarists.
@PreztenW .... no, I disagree. I think keith's insight is true, that young people at the time were excited by that blurring between black and white identity that Elvis seemed to represent. As to Keith being ugly, I can't help but notice the warmth in his eyes, and his ability to bust into a blindingly real smile. He really doesnt seem ugly to me...I see beauty.
Read his new book and see how he pissed all over Mick. He has always been jealous of Mick for being the front man. Without Mick there would be no stones and this ungrateful piece of shit would just be another back up singer. I didn't feel this way until I read his passive aggressive shit book. If I was Mick I would never tour with this tool again. READ HIS BOOK!
@wslandry Absolutely! He calls Mick Brenda, makes fun of his 'size' and says that Mick is friendless and deeply unhappy. Maybe they should reprint the mid-seventies interview with Anita Pallenberg and Keef where she calls Keef a smacked out limp dick, and threatens to go into the street to find someone to bang her!
@joefrench555 That's something most people don't realize or remember. "Whites stole blacks music" is complete bullshit. BOTH cultures made HALF of what became as Rock n Roll. Country(white) mixed with Jazz(Black). Both contributed, both played it.
Spend the majority of your time on the road, living the life, and see how fresh and prim you look. Even if you have success and all of the perks, it's a hard life.
@Zephyesa Yeah he has a face that's full of life...a life of drugs and booze. Face it (pun intended), he looks like a guy with a Keith Richards mask, with a little bit of Alice Cooper thrown in for good measure. Dont look too long, you might turn to "Stones!" (pun intended again!)
@calimar28 his face is still more interesting than your one probably, you probably look like a wax manniquien, sounds like you are a little jealous of Keith.
he says its funny that the king of rock n roll had songs without drums... I think its even funnier that the so called king of rock n roll never wrote a song and pretended to play the guitar : P
@SanctumStudios I think it's funny that people gets so assed over the fact he didn't write any songs, y'know what he did instead? He entertained people much better, The Beatles? Sure they wrote their own material (but still, they were four people writing it), but could they dance like Elvis? No, they couldn't. Elvis shouldn't be compared with the likes of Beatles, at his time, practically no one wrote their own material... and, pretending to play the guitar? Yeah, sure... whatever you say.
When I was talking about getting facelifts and nose jobs, everyone, I'm sure knows who I am talking about. I am glad Keith never did this - he has a great personality and a great talent. People put too much emphasis on looks - only the Mona Lisa has stayed the same for the last 500 yrs. I like people for who they are not what they look like. Some people are going to look pretty bad if plastic and botox disappear, then what? Read Keith's book - he's pretty together.
@jenniferalls: Yeah, I also think he's quite intelligent. He's actually thought a lot about this over the decades he's been doing it and has seen a lot to know what it means. Rare in this day and age. I also think he took a little dig at Jagger here, "I've got my own dancer to deal with...."
@DaMuttzNutz You got that right. American Idol is not bringing music to the youth, it's destroying music. They emphasize the look, the performance art or acting, and the voice. There's no emphasis on the music, the band, the lyrics, or the soul of what music should be. It shouldn't be good looking glitzy robot kids faking their way with vocal tricks and singing songs that are classics. It's an awful show. Unfortunately, it's what people nowadays buy into.
@elfhermie the problem is the method itself: AE is trying to create, to manufacture a star. It is usually the stars the ones who have to struggle, get rejected many times just like Elvis was at the Grand Ole Opry. Stars are not born that way, they can not be manufactured.

Tom Jones, Johnny Cash -- not known for writing their own material or producing either. Not relevant? Go back to before 1956 & listen to that music. All artists you list ADMIRED Elvis Presley. No respect?
lastrada52 3 months ago 2
@lastrada52 elvis was caricature after returning from the army! he made crap music and crap movies through out the 60's that's why he was OVERLAPPED in popularity! novelty was the wrong word. chuck berry was INFINITELY more talented than elvis and had Chuck berry been white his popularity wouldve KILLED elvis' white america had never seen a white man and dance like that. blacks saw that a dime a dozen that is what i'm referring to as the novelty
mauricetaylorII 3 months ago
@mauricetaylorII - You make some good points maurice but Chuck had a good run of hits, purchased primarily by a white record buying audience -- he had his opportunity & he's still at it today. But despite your opinion of Elvis, why is it James Brown, Chuck Berry, Rufus Thomas, Sammy Davis, Jr., Ray Charles, Cissy Houston, many black gospel singers & many other major black artists sing the praises of Elvis Presley? Why? They aren't idiots. Maybe they hear or see something you're missing?
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 Chuck had people who WOULDN'T buy his records nor let him play in venues because of the color his skin! Believe me and Chuck has said it as well that barrier hurt his sales and overall popularity.
mauricetaylorII 3 months ago
@mauricetaylorII - maurice, Chuck was arrogant & problematic for promoters. He still is. He wrote, sang & played classic R&R tunes & "Maybelline" sold over a million, but at near 30 years old - he was too old to attract teens compared to a 21 year old, charismatic, good looking, rebellious & talented Elvis. Little Richard & Fats Domino had national hits. Chuck Berry hurt Chuck Berry's sales and Chess was a major label at the time. He never lost the respect of musicians or fell out of style.
lastrada52 3 months ago
@mauricetaylorII - Your comment to sternelvis -- where is the proof The Beatles were a "bigger influence" than Elvis globally? Substantiate it. Don't forget it's The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, Otis Redding (yeah, him too), who said they took their cue from seeing & hearing Elvis in the 50's. What you might be talking about is popularity, not influence. This explains why Keith Richards & John Lennon were influenced by Elvis but their fans may have dismissed him. But that's not true anymore.
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 The Beatles changed and influenced the sound and look of almost every artist that came after them. Writing their own material. How many bands in the 60's & 70's mimicked The Beatles? Are you serious? John has always said he and Paul were more influenced by Buddy Holly because like them he was a singer/songwriter. Seeing Elvis on tv made them want to become rock & roll singers but the music Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers had a MUCH bigger influence on their sound than elvis.
mauricetaylorII 3 months ago
@mauricetaylorII - Valid points but for me to respond effectively I'd need more YouTube space. Who each influenced is not something that can be accurately measured & you'd have to throw in James Brown & Dylan also. Elvis: he was influenced also by Dean Martin & Billy Eckstein (most people today don't even know Billy). Beatles': you had 4 different guys in that band maurice -- all influenced by different sources. Holly, Everlys, yes. Presley too. Early pics of Beatles show an Elvis look.
lastrada52 3 months ago
@mauricetaylorII Early on Paul copied Elvis heavily.
erad67 3 months ago
@mauricetaylorII Elvis had more of an impact on the world than any other entertainer. Of course he was influenced by black artist, as well as white artists. If you compare his recordings of "black artist" tunes to the originals they are miles apart. What Elvis did was take the styles of black musicians and white musicians like country and hillbilly, and make them one. Which we call Rock and Roll. Elvis didn't see color like you. Music is music and it's not colored blind.
sternelvis 3 months ago
@sternelvis The Beatles had a much bigger influence than elvis ESPECIALLY globally!
mauricetaylorII 3 months ago
@lastrada52 - Right. I think though he was equally, even maybe more, interested in Scotty Moore and what he heard him doing on that guitar.
shimokita2 3 months ago
@lastrada52 The thing I don't get about "Elvis", it was just his voice. No guitar playing, no song writing,,, just his voice and one large marketing plan.
When I heard about him abusing his staff as punching bags so his ego can feel like a big bad karate boy, he lost any respect I had for him. This was before he died by the way. His "black belt" fades to white.
SlackerSlayer 3 months ago
@SlackerSlayer - 1st: Everyone's entitled to their opinion & not everyone is going to like Elvis. That's OK. But, if the reason you don't like Elvis is: he doesn't play guitar (he did play rhythm & piano)/ write songs, then add Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Marvin Gaye etc...Marketing? In the 50's? Elvis' mktg was Col Parker. That's it. Mktg rock started after The Beatles because it became a billion $ industry ELVIS started. You "heard about him" being abusive? Opinions of others? And you believe it?
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 It was actually a law suit back in the day I heard of his abuse toward his hired peons. So he wants to learn martial art,,, and missed the main principle behind it. I did not mean to step on your love.
SlackerSlayer 3 months ago
@SlackerSlayer - If you become famous like Elvis everyone wants to sue you SlackerS. It comes with the territory -- even today. No one ever proved Elvis was abusive. Elvis started his martial arts back in '59 in the US Army. Chuck Norris said he was one of the best & that's good enough for me. There are NO reports of Elvis assaulting anyone in his employ. I am not a fan of Elvis' nor do I love him -- I'm just someone who covers the music industry & I certainly do respect the man.
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 There is always the one case that is true. I respect those that deserve it, not because they have a lot of cash. Anyone that uses full force on a "friendly" spar is a complete jerk and should face assault charges.
SlackerSlayer 3 months ago
@SlackerSlayer - "The one case that is true." One? I fought years ago, & I know even in sparring you're going to let go with some solid shots. Come on Slacker - one case - could that be where Elvis' opponent tested him and Elvis had to defend himself? There's always that jerk, as you said, that uses full force. Usually it's the sparring partner who wants to score some points for the ladies or his friends who are watching. You don't think someone would do that to an Elvis? I bet you would.
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 It was a figure of speech. Where there's smoke there's fire.
You do bring up another example of good vs bad, and figure of speech(es). Remember the feel good movie karate kid? Which instructor taught the good way and who taught the dirty way. Your Elvie took the wrong way if he thought it was funny or whatever induced his strategy, to strike blows against someone that thought if he fought back he would be fired.
SlackerSlayer 3 months ago
@SlackerSlayer - Elvis -- a "bad sport" or abusive opponent are what? A consistent behavior or just one episode -- 1 person's word against Elvis? SlackerS., we didn't witness it. So it's speculation. Elvis had a temper, he was no saint - but, Bobby Brown's arrested for striking Whitney Houston had an arrest record. It never affected their careers. So why be preoccupied with an alleged Elvis episode? I hope you didn't get your info from that inaccurate, dreadful Albert Goldman book.
lastrada52 3 months ago
@lastrada52 It was actually a small group of voices against the elvie voice. He liked to have one sided full contact spar with his body guards.
SlackerSlayer 2 months ago
@SlackerSlayer - OK a small group of voices. But any celebrity Slacker is going to come under fire by these types of people. If there's reason to believe he did these things -- I still think it's very small compared to allegations levied against celebrities such as Michael Jackson's. His accusations were heavy duty compared to this. Yet, there are people who believe he didn't do what he was accused of. In some respects, it includes me. You have to give the person the benefit of the doubt. Yes?

SanctumStudios 7 months ago

Unfortunately, it's what people nowadays buy into.
elfhermie 5 months ago 2
@elfhermie the problem is the method itself: AE is trying to create, to manufacture a star. It is usually the stars the ones who have to struggle, get rejected many times just like Elvis was at the Grand Ole Opry. Stars are not born that way, they can not be manufactured.
