My understanding is that The Fifth Dimension wrote and first recorded this song. I agree with consensus, though, Marlena Shaw's version crushes the others like a grape.
@tahoeshgrl The 5th Dimension never WROTE any of their songs. They DID do a fine version of this song, tho, I must say. Marlena Shaw's version is probably my fav tho.
@denknee Actually, Lamonte' McLemore wrote two songs for the 5th Dimension..."A Love Like Ours" on the Portrait album and "the Singer" on the Love Lines Angles and Rhymes album.
Either way it was Motown. Nicholas Ashford was a writer for Motown at the time. Him and his wife wrote this song. If you listen closely you can hear James Jamerson on the bass and he was the Motown sound.
RIP NICKOLAS ASHFORD

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell recorded this song before the Fifth Dimension.
Motown pushed the Onion Song as the initial 45 from the album Easy.

I think the Messengers version predates the 5th Demenntions version and Tammi and Marvin's version as well, but definitely Motown.

5th Dimension version came out first

The Messengers actually released the single first in 1967. This song is copyrighted by Jobete Music Catalog - Motown.
