I do hate it when arguements start about whos best, Patti was 63 at the time this was filmed and turned 65 today she is bound to have deteriated with age everybody does, if you actually watch some of the footage of her recent performances she is gradually improving as she has a vocal coach to retrain her voice, in her youth she was a one of the best, she still is in my opinion how many of the people who are supposed to be better than her are still singing again?? First of all this very same night Patti was upstaged when they did the finale and the light skinned dude on the piana went higher than Patti and Debrorah Cox looked right into the camera because she peeped it. There have plenty of times Jennifer Hudson was screaming at Patti,

the GLAAD awards,Patti's B-Day Bash,etc

and I've seen Chaka out belt Patti TWICE.

Regina Bell kept up w/Patti when they did Motown live and Patti did all her trademark

The man on the piano is John Stanley. Who replaced Miss Pattis` longtime Collaborator, James "Budd" Ellison. Who passed from Cancer nearly ten years ago. Imagine how hard it was to fill those shows and keep Patti on stage and feeling comfortable about it. Regina Belle is a lot younger than Patti, and like everyone else, her strength has weakened over time, but still a pleasure. Chaka? Please. 1980`s, oh yeah. Now, It`s not the same for her either.

You have to remember Patti is almost 65, and her voice is also 65, you must be a fool to think she would sound as if she was 30. First of all George, she was not using falsetto, that's her head voice and I believe she used it so that Dash and Nona could actually be heard.

And I'm Isntitashame, she doesn't have to prove herself to anyone, and she DOES sound better than a lot of new artists today, excluding JHud, who has an amazing voice and talent, but is she better than Patti...no. In time I think JH will grow as a legend just as Patti did.

Patti's ability to easily hit the high notes, and to just simply carry a tune seems to be fading more and more, and that's to be expected at her age. I used to love to hear her sing with her ability to hit amazing high notes. Other than hitting high notes her vocal ability in a lower register was mediocre at best, in other words she was only amazing when she was blowing everybody away with high notes. When her ability to hit high notes completely goes, she's toast.

There really is nothing great about this performance unless your a fan of LaBelle and just happy to see them together. This is a clear indication that Patti don't sound good when she ain't screaming. A singer like Aretha Franklin, who's voice is clearly shot will be able to get by longer-if she don't explode because she can still kind of do those gospel drenched soulful runs people like to hear. Patti never could, and she needs to stop that silly sounding forced hiccup thing she does sometimes.

Patti is using her 'head voice' which is a difficult thing to do, but she executes it with great precision. Patti's voice has aged and definitely has thinned....but this is to be expected with ANY singer at her age. Yes Jennifer Hudson and others in her class are indeed excellent BUT they cannot go anywhere near Patti when she was that age. Patti remains in a class all on her own that no other singer be they young or old can get near to! Check out the Labelle albums (and not just Lady M!)

Head voice and falsetto voice is the same thing. Patti is not using her head voice to be different, she is using it because her chest voice which she would prefer to use isn't what it used to be. Using the head or falsetto voice is the easy way out when you cant hit the high notes, and doesn't sound as good either. Falsetto singing is for men who can't naturally hit high notes. When people like Aretha, who also uses falsetto now, and Patti start using a falsetto voice It's time to retire.

If head voice is the easy way of getting out of a note than there would be no such thing as opera. Having a great head voice is just as hard as high octave belting. Also head voice and falsetto aren't the same thing. ANY classically trained person can tell you that. And if using "falsetto" means it's time to retire Mariah and MANY other singers wouldn't have ever had a career.
