IMO, some one should try to place the camera mid mount looking out toward the point of the board. Near the lead foot and center. From the board's perspective.

Why is it that almost every surfer using a GoPro faces the camera towards them rather than looking forward down the line?

Because that's the mount that comes with the camera. I have a few years of R&D into making the poles looking out you can see on clips like Kalani Chapman is using on my channel. Keep looking threw my videos and you will see more tail shots from places like Tavarua, Teahopu'u, and Pipeline.

@pelleogmartin edtiting, lighting, camera resolution, it's the same camera. I've been a surf photographer for 25 years so that is the biggest advantage.
