In my opinion 2 Gigabytes of RAM is a good minimum standard, 4 Gigabytes is good for the Average Joe, 8 Gig is a nice minimum for an online gamer, 16 Gig is good for video editing, any higher than that is great for most anything depending on how much you multitask.
Also if you use Linux or BSD (no... that does not mean Mac OSx) than you dont need a lot at all, my box that I'm using has a 1 Gig, I also have my server with only half that and another box that has a quarter Gig running Ubuntu with LXDE (also known as Lubuntu) and both of my computers are faster than any Windows or Mac computer.... Also did i mention Linux/BSD are free? and they work on old computers?
@aellison03 yes, some computers can only handle so much ram, a 32bit os can only handle 3.25gb of ram even though more may be installed, and you are also limited by single stick ram size wich is 8gb right now but most computers can handle from 12 to 24 gb of ram max but 4gb is a good place to start if you are building a computer

YOUR ALL NUKING FUTS I HAVE 4 GIGS FOR MY "HARD CORE GAMING" WITH A QUAD CORE AND IT RUNS LIKE A DREAM NO SLOW DOWNS EVER 4 GIGS FOR THE STANDARD USER 6+ FOR HARD CORE THAT'S THE ANSWER CHRIS!!!
@tcbk2 Yeah but how big of a page file do you have/how much virtual memory are you running once that amount of physical memory is taken up? 4 Gigs does get taken up pretty quick when you do start running a game and some music, it get taken up real quick.
Of course he didnt answer it with a solid number. It completely depends on what you are doing. I watched this because I thought it would be funny and it was. People dont get that there is not a specific number. A couple years ago the amount of RAM we get now couldnt even be fathomed. Dont hate on him for telling you the truth.
Since DDR3 is now a standard, it's really inexpensive, so for an avarage pc(mac, linux, whatever) user you can buy 8gig and that will be more than enough..
That what TLDtoday always says, alway go 16gb of ram, its the best blahblah blah blah i can't trust his opinion cause its not a logical answer and it will never be
i would say 8g-16g RAM...reason why? in a few short years, that 4g RAM will be like 56k compared to cable/DSL connection. Like a friend once said to me " its better to have it and don't need it, then needing it and don't have it "...but the real question is, what you can afford.
Calm down dude... Don't watch this crap. If all you do is word documents, spreadsheets, email. youtube all you need is 4gs RAM (Windows Vista and 7). Most of the computers sold today are sold with 4GB of RAM. So yeah, there...
Think we are talking 4Gb - 8Gb for a good computer that would cover 95% of people. Have 16Gb and I don't think I have ever used more then 6Gb. But it will not be more than a year before ddr3 ram prices increase. An
I have 8GB Rams, I use photoshop, corel painter12, Pandora radio playing in the background plus browsers, excel, and virus protections in the background working. But graphic cards memory also very important nothing less than 512MB+ necessary. For HD video editing I recommend 16GB + 1 or 2GB graphics card (expensive)
Chris. Is that his name Chris? Anyway, firstly, you need to calm down. And the Answer to the question is 4GB of RAM with Win 7 64bit. That's how much RAM you need to build a "good" computer. He didn't say a Video Editing workstation, or gaming machine, he just said "good computer".
I have to say that 4GB seems plenty for most people. But yes.. If I was to build a computer for somebody I would first ask them what they wanted to do with it. The amount of RAM totally depends on what a person wants to do.
8GB DDR3 (2x4GB) is all you will need and is very cheap. Unless like he said you do video editing, photo editing, whatever editing. If you're gaming, get 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 ram.
I use 4GB of ram myself, I'd say that people who use programs like photoshop and other professional image/video editing tools should go for 6GB or more and gaming PCs should stick with 4, 6 being the maximum..
@Makaveli456 6 being the maximum? You best be trollin'. New games like Crysis 2, BF3, MW3 etc. would require more than this. And even a lot more if the ramm isn't fast. For a standard user, 4gb's of shitty ramm will be enough for them too browse their Facebooks and lol at cats on youtube. A gamer requires more, I'd say 12gb's of moderatly fast ramm should be sufficient. And a editor (movies, music, photo) should, as he says in the video, get as much as you possibly can get.
@jensi18 well actually 4gb of ram should be enough for gaming, since this requires A LOT LESS needs than graphical design does, a whole lot less... this is because of customization between a big pc range... 4gb's should still be enough to run crysis2 smoothly , MW3 is just a joke you named it since it is using older graphics engine compared to bf3..
But I agree that you rather want to get more than having the fear you wont have enough.. but seriously MW3? why. it's no way near to next gen game
@jensi18 but yeah future wise you should get 8gb at least.. but seriously... mw3??? I still can't get my head around it I really still can't... crysis2 maybe but when having everything on with the extra texture pack and dx11.. it uses like 1.8gb only...
@Makaveli456 more is always better I rather have a large bottle neck than having the fear I don't have enough or that I'm reaching the limits.. when I was gaming, photoshopping and/or cinema4D/maya/3dsmax using 4 gb of ram I was always crammed near the limits... 6 should be fine yes, but rather get double. currently am on 8gb of ram and when uber multitasking it still reaches easily up between 4-6gb, that's when I have ps and c4d open with background apps and busy rendering
Well, this video was bit of a waste of time. Chris, instead of spending 3 minutes telling us to get as much as we can afford, why not tell us how much to get for doing different tasks? I mean, how much RAM would be needed to play 2011 video games? That seems pretty relevant to me. And how much to browse the web, etc? I think this video would have been more helpful if it were geared towards gamers instead of graphic designers, because a lot more people play games than design graphics.
@Warghost1000 I'm into graphic designing and video editing and I know that anywhere from 8GB to 16GB is good territory. Playing game's in 2011 depends really, 4GB is fine for most games. 2GB should be anyone's bare minimum for RAM.
If you want to have a high-end gaming machine to have your setting's on high/ultra than 8GB is all you really need. Hope I helped, like so other's can see.
@ThomasCreel Thanks, that helps as a guideline. I had 8gb, but just upgraded to 12gb because Battlefield 3 is a poorly made game that doesn't use RAM well. With 12gb it runs better.
Actually, on a more serious note, I think the speed of the ram might be slighty more important than the amount.
Obv a gig at 1333mhz isn't as good as a gig at say, 2333mhz...
Which can make ram's price skyrocket really quickly in comparison to the rest of your pc. Motherboards can be over clocked to reach these speeds (considering they're compatible with the speed). And processors have set prices. So rams probably the most expensive thing..
I looked at the price and got 16gb for about $100 for my iMac. You don't save much to go lower and to go to 32gb it costs 20 times as much. I also plan to do video editing.
@SuperZitkus i play grand theft auto on high settings and crysis 2 on high settings world of warcraft on ultra settings and non of my games lag and if they do its because of my video card and i multitask and thats why i got a quad core processor so it can handle all my needs and i do alot on this computer and play alot of games and alot of editing and you can see my editing on my youtube i have videos that i post just listen to me don't buy ram if you need processor and a video card first!!
More Ram the better. I have 12 gbs of ram in my iMac 27" i7, but I do a lot of video editing. The max according to Apple is 16 gbs, but crucial says 32 gb max. It is pricey if you install 8 gb chips.
Hi People. I apologize for posting this. I know this comment is not related to this video, but our company is going under (incl all my saving -> then my credit score) and this is my desperate last resort to promote our iphone app. it's called "FS Viewer" and "Analyst Rating Tracker". u'd be really helping out a bunch of imminent jobless people.. thanks.
I always say to do your normal activities and before you shut down your PC launch task manager and check it, if the commit charge peak number is more than the physical memory total number, you need more RAM.
For instance my peak is 1,798,396 AKA 1.72GiB and my total is 1310192 AKA 1.25GiB (1GiB+256MiB) hence I need more RAM myself, I need to swap the 256 stick for another 1 gig stick.
If you are getting "virtual memory minimum too low" messages you REALLY need more.
Hey "Gilbert Gottfried" wanna b, I think you can help a lot more, You made me spend 3 Min. of my time listening to you say nothing at all, Now redo the video and don't do drugs this time!!!, If anyone wants my answer to the question ask me directly.
Chris how can you be a tech vlogger and not have even mentioned the pre-release of Windows 8 yet? I know you adore OSx but the fact of the matter is the vast majority of people are using a Windows machine... I don't see why you should ignore it!
If you're rocking the old IBM Thinkpad and max it out to 16MB RAM then you might be able to type youtubedotcom and press enter before realizing that it's not enough.
Ummmm... EXCUSE ME?!?! I'm 16 and I own 20 Records. And I have a record player... SO GO SOAK YOUR HEAD! I also think this is a stupid question... it really is...
I have 4GB of RAM And I edit videos, but my iMac runs slow when editing. 12-16GB is about perfect for a video editor, 4-8GB for a gamer, 2GB for a web surfer, 32GB for a show-off/government computer.
Even for gaming, 99% of (even new) games are still 32-bit (Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Rage, Skyrim, etc.) What this means is that they cannot address more than 4 GB of memory, because of the limitation that 32-bits can only use 4.2 billion memory address spaces (4 GB). Same thing with Photoshop (with the exception of 64-bit PS), and 9 out of 10 other applications you'll find. Also, if you have a 32-bit OS, you can't use more than 4 GB anyway. Run a 64-bit OS with 8 GB and you're good.
my motherboard has had 8gb in it (4 x 2048 DDR2 800MHz) and i have had that in there when it was the best you could get, there is now ddr3 but i do not see the need to upgrade from that as i do not even use 3GB of it it was a nice system when i got it
AMD phenom 2 (4 x 3GHz) 9800GT (HD5770 x 2 now) and 3TB hdd's so gaming never uses more that 4GB (crysis / crysis 2)
As for LP, I still have my collection from the 70s and 80s, including some rare two tracks, a box full of 8 tracks, and a few boxes of cassettes, which I still listen to. ;-)
Don't be too rash on the age of your viewer(s) Chris. ;-)
You need 1GB of RAM. Or more.

I would say at least 4GB.
But I never use 100% of the capacity (maximum is about 60%) but always hit 100% of my CPU when I make videos.

The secret in this video is that you need 3 GB of RAM he hints it at the end.
WillTrollsTroll 4 months ago
I looked at the price and got 16gb for about $100 for my iMac. You don't save much to go lower and to go to 32gb it costs 20 times as much. I also plan to do video editing.

More Ram the better. I have 12 gbs of ram in my iMac 27" i7, but I do a lot of video editing. The max according to Apple is 16 gbs, but crucial says 32 gb max. It is pricey if you install 8 gb chips.

I didn't think he'd give THIS answer.
I mean, if I have to be honest and give an answer to how much RAM you need CURRENTLY, I'd say a minimum for an average is 3 to 4 GB.
Windows (7) already uses some up and then most games will need a minimum of 3 or 4 GB when you don't have anything else running.
Indeed when you edit videos and stuff 4 GB is a VERY minimum amount.
If you do less than editing and gaming, indeed I'd go with at least 2.
Any amounts over 4 isn't needed for the average user.
DamageIncM 4 months ago
@DamageIncM
Also, what makes your PC run "good" depends on the amount, sure, but also on the quality or the speed.
You have to look at the type and the frequencies and the latencies and all that stuff.
If you don't have enough, that's one thing, it will make your computer struggle and "gasp" for more memory.
If there's plenty and it's just not very high-speed, it will just run slower.

As for LP, I still have my collection from the 70s and 80s, including some rare two tracks, a box full of 8 tracks, and a few boxes of cassettes, which I still listen to. ;-)
