  • You need 1GB of RAM. Or more.

  • 4 gigs minimum for windows 7 64 bit

  • 1gb : Surfing the web and small web games

2gb : Some games and quicker web surfing

4gb : Good games and more multitasking

6gb : Better games and more multitasking

8gb or more : Hardcore gaming

10gb or more : Video editing and making

  • you are just dumbass, everybody can answer that way and give some idiot face

  • In my opinion 2 Gigabytes of RAM is a good minimum standard, 4 Gigabytes is good for the Average Joe, 8 Gig is a nice minimum for an online gamer, 16 Gig is good for video editing, any higher than that is great for most anything depending on how much you multitask.

  • so can somebody tell me if i wanted to play call of duty world at war zombies how much RAM would i need whats the min and max amount??????/

  • @mrgamer556 head over to "canirunit(dot)com" and check.

  • Also if you use Linux or BSD (no... that does not mean Mac OSx) than you dont need a lot at all, my box that I'm using has a 1 Gig, I also have my server with only half that and another box that has a quarter Gig running Ubuntu with LXDE (also known as Lubuntu) and both of my computers are faster than any Windows or Mac computer.... Also did i mention Linux/BSD are free? and they work on old computers?

  • Will your computer only handle so much or can you put as much ram in it as you want

  • @aellison03 yes, some computers can only handle so much ram, a 32bit os can only handle 3.25gb of ram even though more may be installed, and you are also limited by single stick ram size wich is 8gb right now but most computers can handle from 12 to 24 gb of ram max but 4gb is a good place to start if you are building a computer

  • 8 Gb is most most people will need.

  • i have only 12 and i think its few :(

  • wooow. to put it nicely, he is veeeeeeeeeeeeery energetic.

  • wow "this guy can really help people" is a dumbass

  • 8gb of ram is for power users. Gamers mostly. Someone rendering larger files should use more.

  • so, this type of guys do really exist!!! woow Its like in the movies hahaha

  • 18 rammmm

  • im trying to get my step dad to put more ram into my computer but he keeps telling me you don't need to fix something that's not broken my step dad is a complete ediot i need more ram so my game wont be so laggy and my step dad keeps saying my processor is the problem which it s not

  • this guy is a fucking fuckhole who has no idea how to make a good tech video. who complains at the people like that? if ur gonna make a channel style like this, expect REPETITIVE questions! LinusTechTips RAPE this annoying shitface, lmfao. plus, he basially said the same thing for 3 minutes.

linus is the best tech person the web

  • @sumkid101 You hate his videos, you hate him, yet you stop by to comment. Well done for showing everyone how much of an idiot you are.

  • @EponymousGaming this is the first video ive seen from him, so ya, i came by hoping it would help (though i already know how much ram i need lol) so HA

  • jerk

  • I totally agree with lockergnome. Its relative. But I think I have the best answer. Its like "If your're going out the house, you need some shoes. But on your way, there's a tsunami coming! What do you do? Now you will need some boots! But the water is too much its like the ocean..now you will need flippers! So my answer will be get the most RAM for you PC..co'z you'll never know what will happen. Vote up if you agree!

  • I think a X79 platform with 64GB of 2133 ram is almost enough.

  • So you made this video to tell us what we alrighty know?

  • YOUR ALL NUKING FUTS I HAVE 4 GIGS FOR MY "HARD CORE GAMING" WITH A QUAD CORE AND IT RUNS LIKE A DREAM NO SLOW DOWNS EVER 4 GIGS FOR THE STANDARD USER 6+ FOR HARD CORE THAT'S THE ANSWER CHRIS!!!

  • @tcbk2 Yeah but how big of a page file do you have/how much virtual memory are you running once that amount of physical memory is taken up? 4 Gigs does get taken up pretty quick when you do start running a game and some music, it get taken up real quick.

  • PRESS 6 AND PRESS 6 AND PRESS 6!!! spin you!!!!

  • Of course he didnt answer it with a solid number. It completely depends on what you are doing. I watched this because I thought it would be funny and it was. People dont get that there is not a specific number. A couple years ago the amount of RAM we get now couldnt even be fathomed. Dont hate on him for telling you the truth.

  • I've never seen a more pointless video in my life. Really man. You usually make good videos, but this one is just retarded.

The title itself is a question, and you answer it with "depends on what you're doing".

You didn't give any detailed explanation about anything. You said a lot without saying anything.

  • Since DDR3 is now a standard, it's really inexpensive, so for an avarage pc(mac, linux, whatever) user you can buy 8gig and that will be more than enough..

  • That what TLDtoday always says, alway go 16gb of ram, its the best blahblah blah blah i can't trust his opinion cause its not a logical answer and it will never be

  • 64 FTW

  • How many gigs of RAM do I need to make your voice be less annoying? And run AutoCAD and Photoshope ALL at the same time?

  • @NickIsOriginal u need alot of RAMming up your ass!

  • @surajr1711 Thank you.

  • Thanks

  • 126 MB of RAM

  • @BMLarson93 that much ram sucks

  • @jorgeasalas oh really?

  • How much RAM would be good if I were using the computer solely to throw at you?

  • @AmateurDrumCovers, replace the RAM with grenades, that should be enough.

  • @AmateurDrumCovers the more the better,as much as you can fit in he case

  • press 3 to see chris wanking his massive cock :D

  • How old is your mom, Chris ?

  • Comment removed

  • "yeah RAM" haha

  • i would say 8g-16g RAM...reason why? in a few short years, that 4g RAM will be like 56k compared to cable/DSL connection. Like a friend once said to me " its better to have it and don't need it, then needing it and don't have it "...but the real question is, what you can afford.

  • Calm down dude... Don't watch this crap. If all you do is word documents, spreadsheets, email. youtube all you need is 4gs RAM (Windows Vista and 7). Most of the computers sold today are sold with 4GB of RAM. So yeah, there...

  • @gabo0789

short, sweet, and to the point

  • And I may need all 16Gb

  • Think we are talking 4Gb - 8Gb for a good computer that would cover 95% of people. Have 16Gb and I don't think I have ever used more then 6Gb. But it will not be more than a year before ddr3 ram prices increase. An

  • I have 8GB Rams, I use photoshop, corel painter12, Pandora radio playing in the background plus browsers, excel, and virus protections in the background working. But graphic cards memory also very important nothing less than 512MB+ necessary. For HD video editing I recommend 16GB + 1 or 2GB graphics card (expensive)

  • Hmmm they need to bring back the Pick Up Artist and have this guy on there!

  • is that shirt size small? hmm...

  • Chris. Is that his name Chris? Anyway, firstly, you need to calm down. And the Answer to the question is 4GB of RAM with Win 7 64bit. That's how much RAM you need to build a "good" computer. He didn't say a Video Editing workstation, or gaming machine, he just said "good computer".

  • 16gb of ram for 75$ seems reasonable to me.

    Ram isnt expensive anymore.

  • @coolbuddydude1 yea it is...well, it depends what kind of ram you want. ram for my old laptop costs 100$ per 1gb ram

  • @TasteForDisaster

    really?

    on newgg.ca for Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model PSD38G1600SK

    47$

    for 16gb (2x8gb) its 207$

  • @TasteForDisaster

    anyway desktop ram is cheap

  • you frustrate me!!

  • How much sheeps i need ?

  • Put as many mem in your pc as much girls u have fucked. ....in your life

  • My cock is thicker than your arms.

  • You are the kind of nerd that gives cool nerds like me a bad name

  • has this dude ever been laid?

  • I want to punch your geek face sooo bad

  • @BossBrownsugar why LOL?

  • @BossBrownsugar then don't watch

  • i need 6850654680GB

  • I have to say that 4GB seems plenty for most people. But yes.. If I was to build a computer for somebody I would first ask them what they wanted to do with it. The amount of RAM totally depends on what a person wants to do.

  • Are you on coke?

  • 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB) is all you will need and is very cheap. Unless like he said you do video editing, photo editing, whatever editing. If you're gaming, get 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 ram.

  • I am getting a ram upgrade, but don't know how much to get.

I play PC Games such as skyrim

I don't do any video editing

Would 2gb be enough or should I go with 4gb... Or higher.

  • @Dromjj It depends, what os are u using? 64 bit or a 32bit one?

  • @Dromjj Get at lease 4gb, 8gb would be much better. You are not going to be playing Skyrim on just 2 gigs of ram.

  • Yeah I agree if your using windows 64 bit 4 gigs should be min possibly more

  • I use 4GB of ram myself, I'd say that people who use programs like photoshop and other professional image/video editing tools should go for 6GB or more and gaming PCs should stick with 4, 6 being the maximum..

  • @Makaveli456 6 being the maximum? You best be trollin'. New games like Crysis 2, BF3, MW3 etc. would require more than this. And even a lot more if the ramm isn't fast. For a standard user, 4gb's of shitty ramm will be enough for them too browse their Facebooks and lol at cats on youtube. A gamer requires more, I'd say 12gb's of moderatly fast ramm should be sufficient. And a editor (movies, music, photo) should, as he says in the video, get as much as you possibly can get.

  • @jensi18 well actually 4gb of ram should be enough for gaming, since this requires A LOT LESS needs than graphical design does, a whole lot less... this is because of customization between a big pc range... 4gb's should still be enough to run crysis2 smoothly , MW3 is just a joke you named it since it is using older graphics engine compared to bf3..

But I agree that you rather want to get more than having the fear you wont have enough.. but seriously MW3? why. it's no way near to next gen game

  • @jensi18 but yeah future wise you should get 8gb at least.. but seriously... mw3??? I still can't get my head around it I really still can't... crysis2 maybe but when having everything on with the extra texture pack and dx11.. it uses like 1.8gb only...

  • Not sure how you manage that with crysis 1 I use 4

  • @Makaveli456 more is always better I rather have a large bottle neck than having the fear I don't have enough or that I'm reaching the limits.. when I was gaming, photoshopping and/or cinema4D/maya/3dsmax using 4 gb of ram I was always crammed near the limits... 6 should be fine yes, but rather get double. currently am on 8gb of ram and when uber multitasking it still reaches easily up between 4-6gb, that's when I have ps and c4d open with background apps and busy rendering

  • Comment removed

  • I use 8GB of RAM, not because i'm a junkie but because I do a lot of video editing and graphic designing. I'm going to upgrade for more power though.

  • I think 6-8GB RAM, because most of the games now takes around 4GB ram if you not are a gamer then you have 2 later ;)

  • GEEK

  • geek symbol at 3:05 heheh

  • @NoJokesOK YOUR FAMILIY IS A GEEK SYMBOL

  • @MrSondre2811

so u are the product done by gays?? ahh the reason why it smells so bad when u are coming into a room

  • Well, this video was bit of a waste of time. Chris, instead of spending 3 minutes telling us to get as much as we can afford, why not tell us how much to get for doing different tasks? I mean, how much RAM would be needed to play 2011 video games? That seems pretty relevant to me. And how much to browse the web, etc? I think this video would have been more helpful if it were geared towards gamers instead of graphic designers, because a lot more people play games than design graphics.

  • @Warghost1000 I'm into graphic designing and video editing and I know that anywhere from 8GB to 16GB is good territory. Playing game's in 2011 depends really, 4GB is fine for most games. 2GB should be anyone's bare minimum for RAM.

If you want to have a high-end gaming machine to have your setting's on high/ultra than 8GB is all you really need. Hope I helped, like so other's can see.

  • @ThomasCreel Thanks, that helps as a guideline. I had 8gb, but just upgraded to 12gb because Battlefield 3 is a poorly made game that doesn't use RAM well. With 12gb it runs better.

  • i got 6gigs to play minesweeper :)

  • this guy is really cool :D

  • i am going to have 2 gb but that is more than enough.

  • I think the thumbnail pretty much sums it up...

  • 526 gigs of ram is exactly what you need.

Actually, on a more serious note, I think the speed of the ram might be slighty more important than the amount.

Obv a gig at 1333mhz isn't as good as a gig at say, 2333mhz...

Which can make ram's price skyrocket really quickly in comparison to the rest of your pc. Motherboards can be over clocked to reach these speeds (considering they're compatible with the speed). And processors have set prices. So rams probably the most expensive thing..

  • Everyday Stuff (Typing documents, being on the internet) - 2 or 4 GB of RAM

Video Editing and "PC Gaming" - 8 GB and Up (As much as you can get)

  • Well said

  • you don't need to watch this if you like to surf the web you need

between 2gb/4gb if you use many programs like photoshop and sony vegas

then you wiil need between 4gb/8gb thanx and thumbs up

  • tap on 1 rapidly

  • I would say at least 4GB.

But I never use 100% of the capacity (maximum is about 60%) but always hit 100% of my CPU when I make videos.

  • The secret in this video is that you need 3 GB of RAM he hints it at the end.

  • I looked at the price and got 16gb for about $100 for my iMac. You don't save much to go lower and to go to 32gb it costs 20 times as much. I also plan to do video editing.

  • I have some virtual machines and some RAM-disks so I need a lot of RAM.

  • I'd say 3GB for 32 bit Windows 7, and between 4GB to 6GB on 64 bit Windows 7

  • @XxJamesLegendxX didnt you listen? its relative.

  • @VoiD1x I was super tired when I did it.

  • this guy´s crazy :D

  • How muck ram do i need to play BF 3

  • @sneakylikesnake

4 should be enough but to be save id pick 8

    (not that expensive)

  • 12gb is perfect for my adobe needs, yes i know I could use more but for what I do, Ive never seen it utilize more than ten

  • My total RAM usage never goes above 50% unless I'm playing KotOR.

  • @WolfenNights KotOR :DDDDD

  • My computer last year had 512mbs of Ram and web browsing was fine.

  • For todays basic laptops and desktops, 4 to 6 gigs will give you the speed youve been looking for

  • @jordan3649 Got to agree with you!!!

  • @SuperZitkus i play grand theft auto on high settings and crysis 2 on high settings world of warcraft on ultra settings and non of my games lag and if they do its because of my video card and i multitask and thats why i got a quad core processor so it can handle all my needs and i do alot on this computer and play alot of games and alot of editing and you can see my editing on my youtube i have videos that i post just listen to me don't buy ram if you need processor and a video card first!!

  • @SuperZitkus

    My Specs

  • 1 TB of RAM?

  • More Ram the better. I have 12 gbs of ram in my iMac 27" i7, but I do a lot of video editing. The max according to Apple is 16 gbs, but crucial says 32 gb max. It is pricey if you install 8 gb chips.

  • RAM is useless without a good CPU!

  • Win7:

    Internet - 2 gigs

Heavy program usage - 4 gigs

    Gaming - 4-6 gigs

    Video editing 6+ gigs

  • This guy is a douche.

  • Hi People. I apologize for posting this. I know this comment is not related to this video, but our company is going under (incl all my saving -> then my credit score) and this is my desperate last resort to promote our iphone app. it's called "FS Viewer" and "Analyst Rating Tracker". u'd be really helping out a bunch of imminent jobless people.. thanks.

  • this guy is very annoying....and not funny

  • I always say to do your normal activities and before you shut down your PC launch task manager and check it, if the commit charge peak number is more than the physical memory total number, you need more RAM.

For instance my peak is 1,798,396 AKA 1.72GiB and my total is 1310192 AKA 1.25GiB (1GiB+256MiB) hence I need more RAM myself, I need to swap the 256 stick for another 1 gig stick.

If you are getting "virtual memory minimum too low" messages you REALLY need more.

  • @DamageIncM

Also, what makes your PC run "good" depends on the amount, sure, but also on the quality or the speed.

You have to look at the type and the frequencies and the latencies and all that stuff.

If you don't have enough, that's one thing, it will make your computer struggle and "gasp" for more memory.

If there's plenty and it's just not very high-speed, it will just run slower.

  • I didn't think he'd give THIS answer.

I mean, if I have to be honest and give an answer to how much RAM you need CURRENTLY, I'd say a minimum for an average is 3 to 4 GB.

Windows (7) already uses some up and then most games will need a minimum of 3 or 4 GB when you don't have anything else running.

Indeed when you edit videos and stuff 4 GB is a VERY minimum amount.

If you do less than editing and gaming, indeed I'd go with at least 2.

Any amounts over 4 isn't needed for the average user.

  • Hey "Gilbert Gottfried" wanna b, I think you can help a lot more, You made me spend 3 Min. of my time listening to you say nothing at all, Now redo the video and don't do drugs this time!!!, If anyone wants my answer to the question ask me directly.

  • It all depends on the quality of the ram.

  • 4gb is fine but, I was like fk it I want 6!

  • Chris how can you be a tech vlogger and not have even mentioned the pre-release of Windows 8 yet? I know you adore OSx but the fact of the matter is the vast majority of people are using a Windows machine... I don't see why you should ignore it!

  • If you're rocking the old IBM Thinkpad and max it out to 16MB RAM then you might be able to type youtubedotcom and press enter before realizing that it's not enough.

  • i only need 512 mgb =D

  • Ok soo.. How much ram do I need to watch porn?

  • @djelite07 that depends what kinda porn the high end 1080p stuff or the homemade low quality stuff...

  • @djelite07 16 GB OF RAAM!!!!!!!!!!

  • @djelite07 1GB is enough :p But 4GB is a lot better trust me..

  • @djelite07 It depends on what resolution you want to watch in, what OS you want to use... The answer could vary from 256MB to 2GB.

  • At 2:35 he sounds like Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Thumbs Up

  • the answer is not only in amount but in timings and freegency. Like 6gb 2000mhz 8-8-8 20 ddr3 vs 32 gb 1000mhz ddr2 9-10-9-27

  • 1 BYTE of Ram - Yes I know, I spoil myself.

  • please someone punch this shit nerd. lockergnome deserved to kick his ass.

  • just max it out, I've Mac/PC i've owned over the past 20 years, I've had to max out the memory.

  • i only have 5gb of RAM and it annoys me all the time lol

  • I have 4Gb in my (PC6400) ASUS 701 overclocked to 1.1Ghz!

  • Ummmm... EXCUSE ME?!?! I'm 16 and I own 20 Records. And I have a record player... SO GO SOAK YOUR HEAD! I also think this is a stupid question... it really is...

  • my ipod only has 80 mb of ram :(

  • And how much for music production?

  • I have 4GB of RAM And I edit videos, but my iMac runs slow when editing. 12-16GB is about perfect for a video editor, 4-8GB for a gamer, 2GB for a web surfer, 32GB for a show-off/government computer.

  • the answer to everything is 42

  • @3agl33y369 How many times do I need to beat my girlfriend until she finally makes me a sandwich?

  • @3agl33y369 its 6...

girl asks: How many girls have you dated before me? A: 6

girl askes: on a scale from 1 to 10 how hot do you think that girl is? A: eh 6

  • @3agl33y369 its the life universe and everything

    hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

  • Even for gaming, 99% of (even new) games are still 32-bit (Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Rage, Skyrim, etc.) What this means is that they cannot address more than 4 GB of memory, because of the limitation that 32-bits can only use 4.2 billion memory address spaces (4 GB). Same thing with Photoshop (with the exception of 64-bit PS), and 9 out of 10 other applications you'll find. Also, if you have a 32-bit OS, you can't use more than 4 GB anyway. Run a 64-bit OS with 8 GB and you're good.

  • my motherboard has had 8gb in it (4 x 2048 DDR2 800MHz) and i have had that in there when it was the best you could get, there is now ddr3 but i do not see the need to upgrade from that as i do not even use 3GB of it it was a nice system when i got it

    AMD phenom 2 (4 x 3GHz) 9800GT (HD5770 x 2 now) and 3TB hdd's so gaming never uses more that 4GB (crysis / crysis 2)

  • LOL, everything is a variable.

As for LP, I still have my collection from the 70s and 80s, including some rare two tracks, a box full of 8 tracks, and a few boxes of cassettes, which I still listen to. ;-)

Don't be too rash on the age of your viewer(s) Chris. ;-)

  • i have 4.soon i replace it with 8gb.

  • @demyrik I have 8Gb and i have to say i do not need the other 4Gb i have never used it.

  • @danielsayles when i work with xcode,photoshop/aperture besides the other ''social'' apps,the 4gb are not enough :(

  • The record joke was a bit condescending in my opinion, you are mocking the average age of your viewers.

  • I need about three fiddy.
