I think you forget that Schumacher allegedly kept all the driver aids in 1994 even though they had been banned. After allegations were made by others including Senna an investigation of Schumacher's car revealed software but they could not prove it.
In 1993 everyone had traction control. How can you say Donington is the most overrated? Senna let third place Hill(with a superior Willians) a lap behind. He was able to run quickly on the rain with slicks, while others had rain tires.
I dont know the point in every sennas or schumacher s video has a discussion about who is better. Who was better, we will never know, who was better in the rain, of course is Senna.
Its not the car that was smooth, its Sennas driving on the rain.
I am a Senna fan but I think Prost is severely under appreciated as a driver and I tell you this, without his pragmatic approach there very well could have been a death of one these two.
Prost had seen close friends die early on in his career hence his approach was not "win at all costs" like Senna.
Still I miss these guys they raced hard and provided fabulous entertainment.
I am talking about 1989 not 1990.Jean-Marie Balestre the head of the FIA a French man siding with another French man Prost.I was so happy when Senna got him back though.
In 1993 European Grand Prix, Schumacher had the new Benetton B193B with traction control, so did the McLaren MP4/8 and Williams FW15B.
MP4/8 had a "non-factory" Ford engine, on opposite side the B193B had an official Ford engine, but the best car in that year was the Williams, no question.
The difference in this race was Senna predestination to drive in rain. If you remember so well this race, try to check out the "nice" manoeuvre Schumacher did at the START.
I couldn't agree more with you. those were the times of real driving and real racers. I think in a way, the F1 died along with Senna and Prost retirement.
Effing brilliant, just brilliant. Both were great drivers, control vs instinct. You gotta love Senna going full tilt with one hand gesturing to Mr. Prost.
Thank you for posting this video. It was from the time when i was a kid and started watching F1, it was fantastic. Senna, Prost, Mansell but also other great drivers who were just unlucky to peak at the same time as these three giants, fx Berger the best driver to never win a championship and Thierry Boutsen a great driver as well. Always supported Prost, he was a gentleman, Senna was a wild man who not always played by the book, but still an extraordinary driver, absolutely.
First of all any driver winning 3 world championships can't be overrated .. .. He's the most talented driver of all time, untouchable in quilifying, and some of the races he won? Well nobody else could have done it. Like getting by 4 opponents in a single lap, flying under the rain (namely Michael Schumacher, Nigel Mansell, Riccardo Patrese & Alain Prost - Donington 1993).
Please stop posting on something you clearly know nothing about.
first of all, don´t insult me just because I don´t share your opinion about Senna, the discussion about who is best driver is always subjective, you have a way to see senna different from mine, why senna has to be consider better driver than prost if prost had better results?
and prost won senna in the same team also, and you say that championship was stolen because you are a senna fan, ok senna was really good, awesome specially in rain conditions and qualifying, but in my opinion prost is overall better, he was so much inteligent and more calculator than senna, for example monaco 1988
second you are right when you say i am senna fan and senna had his shortcomings, by that i meen suzuka 1990 but to me monaco 1988 only shows how much more talent senna had than prost. i don't remember exactly but i think senna was 45 seconds ahead, in same car, on the circuit that it really is important how good driver is. i remember ron dennis said couple years ago after been asked will mclaren be competitive on monaco race he said that is to driver to decide
yeah, I agree with you that senna had more natural talent than prost to pure speed, and I like so much senna, but I only say that my favourite is prost because he had also a great natural talent and he was so tactical and inteligent, but anyway, both of them were brilliant

If anything that title belongs exclusively to Schumi.

respect to senna and to every brave men of this sport :)
there has never been racing like this in F1 ever since, Senna vs Prost was as good as it gets. I count myself lucky to be able to watch this live when I was in high school :D
I was watching a documentary about Senna a couple of days ago, and they were saying his rivalry with Prost was so intense that it got to the point where the title didn't matter, just as long as they outdid one another. Even if that meant a crash that had the potential to end careers or worse. Just look at the way Senna's defending his position. I've never seen racing like this, and I doubt I ever will again.
Vc tem razão, é que o vídeo contempla outras temporadas. Qdo falo da ausência da eletrônica, quis dizer até 1991. Em 1992 foi introduzida a suspensão ativa na Williams do Mansell.
As for you guys arguing about who is best... both are true legends pretty much on equal footing. The fact that we got to see them race in the same era is one of the greatest privileges that I know of in sports.
We all have our preferences (mine is Senna), but both were candidates for the best drivers in the history of the sport. Both were also better than Schumacher imo.
The 3 best racedriver in F1 are : FANGIO , SENNA and MICHAEL SCHUMACHER.
I think it's more the capacity to excite the public than the performance, who make a champion. Remember the Nurburgring 1957 with Fangio ( incredible race ), Senna's Pole Position in Suzuka 89 ( fastest lap ever made ) or Michael Schumacher in the Brazil GP 2006, this lastest run...too fast too furious !
You can add Hakkinen In Spa Francorchamps 1999, Mansell at Monaco in 1993... Prost is a fucking fake, just a joke !
One thing : Do you remember the surname of SENNA ? "Magic SENNA".
Which run to help an other racedriver after a crash in this lap of pole position ?? SENNA. Which was 2 incredible laps of qualifying in the same thousandth of a second ? SENNA. Who was called the "Samurai" by his mecanic engineer ? SENNA. Finally, who is a legend ? SENNA or PROST ? You have your opinion and I have my own opinion. I think that is the sum of all these moments and those little "details" that are legends...
Both Senna and Prost are regarded as legends, the difference is that Prost has a lot fewer fans because of his quiet and unspectacular style. I will happily bet you that no team manager in history has ever signed a driver because he can, in your words, "excite the public." If excitement = talent, then Andrea de Cesaris would be one of the greatest drivers ever.
Prost is champion, I agree. But, There is art and how...Senna lived, thought Race and Competition. Everytime on the limit, that made his legend. " The Professor " aka Prost, was a calculator, a brain but no real personality (which explains his lack of popularity...) is incompatible with the image that I am a champion of F1. Senna was the last gentleman driver of his generation. The feat is all the more beautiful to the limit and the public feels ...
If one manoeuvre pushed the Prost-Senna rivalry to new heights, it's what occurs @ 1:35 in Estoril.. That move by Senna changed the markers. Prost turned in on him in Suzuka because he'd had enough of what he perceived to be Senna's bullying over the 2 seasons together, & Senna took revenge the year later. Both did their manoeuvres in Suzuka out of anger, rather than the calculated cheating of Schumacher, who doesn't belong in the same sentence as either.
senna always had the better talent but not always the better car as shown in '92 '93 he pushed mansell and prost very hard for the championship but the active suspension williams renault was 1-2 secs faster
About Suzuka 1989; if you'd seen the race you'll notice that after the chicane incident, Senna overtakes a different driver at the same place, under the same circumstances and this other driver DOESN'T turn in on Senna and take him out.
Fact is, Prost knew what he was doing.
Thank you to the person who mounted the clip; it's one of my favourites on YouTube.
I don't think we'll ever see such battles in F1 again. Now days it's all electronics.I'm not saying driving a Formula 1 car is easy. But back then drivers were really busy behind the wheel,It was a matter of strenght and car control. Now there is traction control, power steering and so on and it's just not the same. The drivers are not as involved as they were 10 or 20 years ago.
there is no traction contrl and cars were alot slower back then and conering speeds were like snail compare to 2004 cars and u had to b physically fit to be able to drive those, mansel was a fatass so he was ok back in the 80s and early 90s when corner speed was slow
lol i bet you that mansel woud go unconshous driving modern f1 car or be very slow in a race cuz he too tired
"I told both the team and the press, 'There's no way I'm going to open the door to him any more.' Ron always said the important thing was that we shouldn't hit each other, we should think of the team. Well, as far as I was concerned, Senna thought about himself, and that was it. At the start of the British Grand Prix going into Copse, if I hadn't moved three or four metres out of the way we'd have hit each other. That sort of thing had happened too often; I had had enough."
Even if Schumi was he most succesful driver in F1 history and Senna is considered a legend, as far as i am concerned Prost was the best. Greatest driver, always fair and loyal.
Senna vetoed Warwick in 86, not 87 because Lotus were simply not capable to run 2 competitive cars. Senna wasn't afraid of Warwick for one second, it was just common sense. He got DSQ because enough was enough, it was right to do so.
Right, and Prost didn't want to have problems with Senna after he was crashed agaist the pitwall in 1988, he was betrayed in Imola 1989, he was almost killed in Suzuka 90. Just common sense, nothing about fear. In 1989 he did swear: "I don't want to share anythng with Senna anymore. At a human level, to me he is a nothingness". He repetaed this promise during 1990, 1991, 1992. Why in the hell shoul d he have accepted Senna as a team mate?
Let's wait for some opinions from our friend Luciano...
Senna was plainly and openly obsessed with Prost. Sure things happened between those 2, and it all overboiled at Suzuka 89. Prost deliberately closed the door, they touched and we all know the rest. Now attempting to kill Prost in 90 is not the right word. All he did(and it's not right) was he took revenge from 89. Deep inside, Prost knew very well that he was edged out by Senna on many levels and he just didn't need the pressure.
What i can't understand about Suzuka 89 is, quoting Lauda: "why should Prost let Senna pass without a fight? Alain drove the normal fight-line, not zig-zag. Alain did not at all drive unfair, the driver who is behind the other is always guilty at accidents. Prost is absolutely innocent!".
That said, the word "revenge" with reference to Suzuka 90 seems to be a nonsense.
Prost was sure not to open the door anymore, he had enough. At Suzuka, he didn't open it, but it's clear to see that he closed it too early. Senna was partly responsible, I'd say it was 50/50 in this one. But Senna openly admitted that his crunch on prost suzuka 90 was a retribution from 89, payback time, so yes, it was revenge.
payback because it was prosts doing watch all the different video angles. the one onboard prost shows him look in the mirror and turn in on senna when he is right beside him 15 feet before regular turn in. if he did not hit him, by time they got to regular turn in Senna would of been ahead! the helicopter shot shows it very well too prost left all sorts of room to invite Senna. and if you watch the whole onboard lap the chicane was the best place to pass prost. i think prost invited and hit him
ok man theres just one problem. prost hit Senna in 89 in a way no one ever hit anyone for a championship to that date. well that i have seen anyway. the fact remains about these 2 drivers in 1989 prost never beat Senna once on the track it was all failures of every kind for Senna. yet prost has the nerve at the end of the year to say it was his worst year in F1 when it was clearly his LUCKIEST. prost is a dick even in docs after Sennas death he still complains about 90 but does he bring up 89 no
Senna was 34 when he died. Prost was 33 when Senna challenged him in 1988 and 34 during the fateful 1989 campaign. We never got to see Senna challenged by the younger rival and fight back like we did with Prost. Many say Senna would have won the 94 season, but would he have? We will never know. Most would have put money on Prost winning the 88 title in March of that year. Senna was always the hunter but never the hunted. Prost was and won at both.
1989 was a sham senna had 5+ car failures. and it still took prost hitting senna at suzuka to grab the title. as for 94 common man hill made it a 1 point champ. what would Senna of done? shumacher is lucky he never had to face Senna in the FW-16 specB (released in germany 94) and why are you talking like Senna didnt know the dangers when he was one of the most out spoken about the dangers?
1- Ayrton Senna
2- Alain Prost
3- michael shumacher (even tho hes the dirtiest champ)
What I really respect about Alain Prost is that unlike any before him or since he was a driver who had nothing more to prove after 1986 - he nearly won titles in 81, 82, 83, 84 and won 85 and 86. He was on top. He was a married man with a child, driving in an era far more dangerous than today and more dangerous than his future challenger realised (and who paid the ultimate price) He was beaten to a title by this man but instead of quitting he fought back and won another 2 titles and nearly a 3rd
You don't see those kind of race these days, i mean seriously, that's what a call real, epic, race battles !!...i trully miss Prost/Senna era !! real drivers, real races.Peace.
Senna versus Prost best ever head to head! Senna the best driver ever because he had Prost to make him the best. Prost the professor because he had Senna to be his student! Best ever combination! 100%
Senna didn't let his gaurd down until Prost retired, Senna confided in him alot because Prost was stone cold in his emotion, Senna wore his emotion on his sleave, Sad thing is people pit them against each other, But they really were good friends, I love them both, but to me Senna was the greatest, People love Senna mroe than any driver in history becaue of his talent, and of his raw emotion, Prost was like a silent Killer in the night
You're right, people love Senna because of his talent and his raw emotion but let's face it, they also love him because he died in a F1 car. You're also right that Prost was ''like a silent killer in the night'', and that's why I adore him more than Senna. But hey, it's just my opinion!
opinion in a contructive manner is great. I am glad that you can enjoy them both the way that I have. I can't stand it when people come on here and start trashing Prost or Senna, most of the time it is those Shuey fanatics. You can love all of them without trashing the other is what most people can not understand. Senna knew who the most talented driver he ever raced against, He considered Schuey up and comming but, in his battles against Hakkinen and Alonso, I feel that Prost was > Schuey
I feel that Prost is one of the most under rated Champion of all time, I admired the way he attacked a race in a methodical manner, His patience the way he could save his car and still have a lot of speed, If Senna could have just had Alain's Patience things would have been a lot different. I consider Alain Prost my second favorite Driver in GP. These battles were unforgetable.
I disagree with your opinion about people loving Senna just because he died, even before his passing, he was a living legend & the respect his fans are showing now was just the same as when he was alive, then again thats your opinion & I respect that :)
we can all argue forever who was better, no one will change my mind but we must remember neither would be held is such high regard without the other there to beat.
Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna are responsible for F1 being such a great sport. M Schumacher is almost single handedly responsible for killing it... The modern races need a great rivalry like this one.
Come on! Schumacher alone isn't responsible for the changes ("killing") in F1. He brought a whole new fan generation as well. All the FIA decisions are more responsible for less overtaking and drivers who are forced by them to behave too carefully. Rivalry is indeed the best what the sport could get. The tough times like in the 80ies will never come back though. Today it's still my favorite sport anyway! :)
Before talking about "unfairness" and "unprofessional motosport", watch what happen in the year before, 1989, and how Prost won that championship... Tell me if that is not "unfairness" and "unprofessional motorsport" and mores serious because was not only from Prost but also from the president of FIA, whom by the way was French...
I think Senna was the best, but I must agree that they were at a very similar level, much higher then F1 drivers that came later lika Schumacher, Alonso or Hamilton
Man this is are the two best drivers ever raced in history.Their reactions are 2-3 times faster than Alonso`s.Even M.Schumaher isn`t this good. Both Senna and Prost had balls big as hell - look at the overtakes.
I got nothing against Schumi, but his fans are just blinded from the truth, he didnt have anybody to race against, prost and senna were both better than schumi and they raced at the same time, it was just awesome!
I wish we could have that kind of driving nowadays :( F1 is getting boring...

only an idiot can say something like this
Prost won 4 championships, in that years that he win championship only one year senna had competitive car
1985 and 1986 senna drove lotus
1989 was stolen from senna by Jean-Marie Balestre
and finnaly 1993, that was the year that Mclaren ford had 70 horse power less than williams and benneton, clearly inferior car
and finnaly senna won championship with prost in same car, 1988, 1990, 1991

I was watching a documentary about Senna a couple of days ago, and they were saying his rivalry with Prost was so intense that it got to the point where the title didn't matter, just as long as they outdid one another. Even if that meant a crash that had the potential to end careers or worse. Just look at the way Senna's defending his position. I've never seen racing like this, and I doubt I ever will again.

The last time F1 was truly spectacular...

I think that is the sum of all these moments and those little "details" that are legends...
yellowbird479 2 years ago 3
Both Senna and Prost are regarded as legends, the difference is that Prost has a lot fewer fans because of his quiet and unspectacular style. I will happily bet you that no team manager in history has ever signed a driver because he can, in your words, "excite the public." If excitement = talent, then Andrea de Cesaris would be one of the greatest drivers ever.
Underscrogman 2 years ago
Prost is champion, I agree. But, There is art and how...Senna lived, thought Race and Competition. Everytime on the limit, that made his legend. " The Professor " aka Prost, was a calculator, a brain but no real personality (which explains his lack of popularity...) is incompatible with the image that I am a champion of F1. Senna was the last gentleman driver of his generation. The feat is all the more beautiful to the limit and the public feels ...

Mansell wasn´t in F1 during the 1993 season.

Senna & Prost are 2 gladiators!

R.I.P Ayrton Senna
spitfirextbg 3 years ago 2
there is no traction contrl and cars were alot slower back then and conering speeds were like snail compare to 2004 cars and u had to b physically fit to be able to drive those, mansel was a fatass so he was ok back in the 80s and early 90s when corner speed was slow
lol i bet you that mansel woud go unconshous driving modern f1 car or be very slow in a race cuz he too tired

(AP about Suzuka 89)
terzaforza 3 years ago
Even if Schumi was he most succesful driver in F1 history and Senna is considered a legend, as far as i am concerned Prost was the best. Greatest driver, always fair and loyal.
terzaforza 3 years ago 2
Prost was great, no doubt, but the 2 things that blotted his career are political manoeverings and his vetoeing other drivers(Senna 1993).
lazerpod66 3 years ago
What about Senna vetoing Wawick in 1987? And what political manouver are you talking about? Senna DSQ in Suzuka 1989 was absolutely correct.
terzaforza 3 years ago
Senna vetoed Warwick in 86, not 87 because Lotus were simply not capable to run 2 competitive cars. Senna wasn't afraid of Warwick for one second, it was just common sense. He got DSQ because enough was enough, it was right to do so.
lazerpod66 3 years ago
Right, and Prost didn't want to have problems with Senna after he was crashed agaist the pitwall in 1988, he was betrayed in Imola 1989, he was almost killed in Suzuka 90. Just common sense, nothing about fear. In 1989 he did swear: "I don't want to share anythng with Senna anymore. At a human level, to me he is a nothingness". He repetaed this promise during 1990, 1991, 1992. Why in the hell shoul d he have accepted Senna as a team mate?
Let's wait for some opinions from our friend Luciano...
terzaforza 3 years ago
Senna was plainly and openly obsessed with Prost. Sure things happened between those 2, and it all overboiled at Suzuka 89. Prost deliberately closed the door, they touched and we all know the rest. Now attempting to kill Prost in 90 is not the right word. All he did(and it's not right) was he took revenge from 89. Deep inside, Prost knew very well that he was edged out by Senna on many levels and he just didn't need the pressure.
lazerpod66 3 years ago
What i can't understand about Suzuka 89 is, quoting Lauda: "why should Prost let Senna pass without a fight? Alain drove the normal fight-line, not zig-zag. Alain did not at all drive unfair, the driver who is behind the other is always guilty at accidents. Prost is absolutely innocent!".
That said, the word "revenge" with reference to Suzuka 90 seems to be a nonsense.
terzaforza 3 years ago
Prost was sure not to open the door anymore, he had enough. At Suzuka, he didn't open it, but it's clear to see that he closed it too early. Senna was partly responsible, I'd say it was 50/50 in this one. But Senna openly admitted that his crunch on prost suzuka 90 was a retribution from 89, payback time, so yes, it was revenge.
lazerpod66 3 years ago
But payback about what, since Prost wasn't responsible at the accident previous year? Senna had a very odd concept of the word "retribution"!
terzaforza 3 years ago
I agree, but Senna was a very special individual.....
lazerpod66 3 years ago
payback because it was prosts doing watch all the different video angles. the one onboard prost shows him look in the mirror and turn in on senna when he is right beside him 15 feet before regular turn in. if he did not hit him, by time they got to regular turn in Senna would of been ahead! the helicopter shot shows it very well too prost left all sorts of room to invite Senna. and if you watch the whole onboard lap the chicane was the best place to pass prost. i think prost invited and hit him
ImmortalSenna 3 years ago
ok man theres just one problem. prost hit Senna in 89 in a way no one ever hit anyone for a championship to that date. well that i have seen anyway. the fact remains about these 2 drivers in 1989 prost never beat Senna once on the track it was all failures of every kind for Senna. yet prost has the nerve at the end of the year to say it was his worst year in F1 when it was clearly his LUCKIEST. prost is a dick even in docs after Sennas death he still complains about 90 but does he bring up 89 no

Prost was and won at both.
beeDUB75 3 years ago 3

Senna didn't let his gaurd down until Prost retired, Senna confided in him alot because Prost was stone cold in his emotion, Senna wore his emotion on his sleave, Sad thing is people pit them against each other, But they really were good friends, I love them both, but to me Senna was the greatest, People love Senna mroe than any driver in history becaue of his talent, and of his raw emotion, Prost was like a silent Killer in the night
dalebshelton 3 years ago 2
You're right, people love Senna because of his talent and his raw emotion but let's face it, they also love him because he died in a F1 car. You're also right that Prost was ''like a silent killer in the night'', and that's why I adore him more than Senna. But hey, it's just my opinion!
kutuut 3 years ago 2
opinion in a contructive manner is great. I am glad that you can enjoy them both the way that I have. I can't stand it when people come on here and start trashing Prost or Senna, most of the time it is those Shuey fanatics. You can love all of them without trashing the other is what most people can not understand. Senna knew who the most talented driver he ever raced against, He considered Schuey up and comming but, in his battles against Hakkinen and Alonso, I feel that Prost was > Schuey
dalebshelton 3 years ago
I couldn't agree more.
kutuut 3 years ago
I feel that Prost is one of the most under rated Champion of all time, I admired the way he attacked a race in a methodical manner, His patience the way he could save his car and still have a lot of speed, If Senna could have just had Alain's Patience things would have been a lot different. I consider Alain Prost my second favorite Driver in GP. These battles were unforgetable.
dalebshelton 3 years ago 2
I disagree with your opinion about people loving Senna just because he died, even before his passing, he was a living legend & the respect his fans are showing now was just the same as when he was alive, then again thats your opinion & I respect that :)

Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna are responsible for F1 being such a great sport. M Schumacher is almost single handedly responsible for killing it... The modern races need a great rivalry like this one.
RazielScioN 3 years ago 5

In my opinion,Prost was better than Senna or at least on the same level.
Just look at 1990,where Senna won the Championship with Unfairness-unprofessional Motorsport of Ayrton Senna.
o0BelaFarinRod0o 3 years ago
Before talking about "unfairness" and "unprofessional motosport", watch what happen in the year before, 1989, and how Prost won that championship... Tell me if that is not "unfairness" and "unprofessional motorsport" and mores serious because was not only from Prost but also from the president of FIA, whom by the way was French...
I think Senna was the best, but I must agree that they were at a very similar level, much higher then F1 drivers that came later lika Schumacher, Alonso or Hamilton
