They had to change the age of Lolita in the film from 12 (as it is in the novel) to 14, due to censorship. And the actress Sue Lyons was actually 14 at the time, however she did look older, but thats also why they thought she would be good for the role, people wouldn't have accepted a 14 yr old that looked 14.

The girl who played lolita in the 62 version just looks too old. I really think the lolita that was picked in the 97 film was perfect, age wise.

Actually Dominique Swain, the actress who portrayed in the 1997 version was 15 years old at the time - a year older than Sue Lyon had been.
But, I think that fact was to her advantage in portraying the older Lolita at the end of the film (Sue Lyon was just not credible as the older Lolita at all, IMO)

@finalfantasyladeh That was due to censorship restrictions at the time. Kubrick wanted to use a younger girl, truer to the story but he wasn't allowed to.

I remember in high school TMC played this in early in the morning/. I started watching it and missed about half my classes because I couldn't tear my self away from it. ( Maybe this is a problem with high school, not me?).

The film was well acted, especially by James Mason. Sue Lyons was not believable as a 12-13 year old girl. She
looks 16+, about the age Lolita is when the twisted narrator drops her.
