We had a sense of humor about this........never! But maintained that there were some creeps out there in the faith so we took it. That was 8-10 years ago, it wasn't funny then, it's not funny now. were just now getting fed up with the label because it is history as in, in the past. So You and Mahr just keep poking the bees with that stick and you'll find out what a brutal sting we have. Fuck heads
haha... is that the truth! I cannot understand someone getting butt hurt because anyone said something against the catholic church. The Catholic church and it's habit of men of GOD molesting little boys and then protecting the bastards who did it have turned more people away from religion more than any other event in history. It's hilarious when Bill makes fun of organized religion. It's like the govt full of lies.

I hate to be so blunt about this but Maher is such an idiot. He spends so much time criticizing and mocking the Catholic Church but no time whatsoever learning anything about it at all.
This video clip he ran on his show - very shortened from the full 2 minute running time - was not produced or paid for by the Catholic Church but by Catholics Come Home, an independent non-profit apostolate created by lay Catholics whose goal is to encourage fallen-away Catholics to return to the ancient faith.
@dane5256 now obama accepts 1 million form maher meaning he agrees with this junk, but I guess it figures since obama has had a battle with the catholic church, now Obama and Maher can war together against the church
"Christian is my name, and Catholic my surname. The one designates me, while the other makes me specific. Thus am I attested and set apart... When we are called Catholics it is by this appellation that our people are kept apart from any heretical name."
Saint Pacian of Barcelona, Letter to Sympronian, 375 A.D..
From An Early church father-all were Catholic-Hundreds of their letters written and accessible online.
The Catholic Church is losing members (over-all). So are mainline protestant denominations. These are the last days.....does this really surprise you? Do you really think there would be a huge "influx" into Christianity during this time? I was protestant, now I'm Catholic....we all follow the same Jesus, and we all BETTER stick together. Times are going to get tougher for us all.
The commercial wasn't about Priests and inappropriate things that happened, which made Catholics leave the church, but it was just about all people who aren't Catholic, or left, to come back and to take another look. To believe, and have trust in God. This little parody Bill Maher made just doesn't make sense.
With Maher it’s not just the Catholic Church, he hates all religions or any Christian. He uses his show and what some may call an audience to espouse his beliefs or his non beliefs. Men are sinners, bad things happen but a lot of good happens too. One bad police officer doesn’t make them all bad. In trouble do you call Bill Maher or the police? By the way 10 times more sexual assaults are committed by fathers than any other group. What will Maher do about that, put an end to fathering children?
@largemarge It is NOT ALL Churches. The Catholic church lives by it's own rules and hides things that are not appropriate. On the other hand, there are a lot of "Bible bangers" that are just as bad. BUT, there are a lot of mainstream Christians that follow in Christ's teachings that do a lot of good for the world.
Used to be a Catholic, for in the New King James version of the Bible it clearly states: Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Pretty clear here, you don't offer up to God money or your good works for the GIFT of his Son. Among others, Catholics don't even know that this simple scripture exists in the Bible...
Vulgate [Lat. Vulgata editio =common edition], most ancient extant version of the whole Christian Bible . Its name derives from a 13th-century reference to it as the "editio vulgata." The official Latin version of the Roman Catholic Church, it was prepared c.AD 383-AD 405 by St. Jerome (c.342-420) at the request of Pope St. Damasus I
Catholicism...destroyed indigenous cultures around the world, converted non-Catholics at sword point, opposed the advent of scientific discovery, killed thousands during the Inquisition, promotes the spread of STDs by opposing condoms, and has resulted in the molestation of little boys around the world.
I completely agree with you. Catholicism is something that should have been left to die in the dark ages long ago. And now with the child molestation of little boys they still want people to ignore that and come back to them instead of addressing that problem and fixing it Then the people who have the nerve to defend these pedophiles and turn a blind eye, there just as guilty as they are.
@MrSinister84 Okay, the number of Catholic Priests that molested boys, is a small number ( keeping in mind that there are millions of Catholic Priests in the world ). The Pope has enforced a "Zero tolerance rule", which means that if this ever happens, they will be renounced as their title from Priest. However, this topic is NOT what the Catholic church is all about. It is about our faith and trust in God, our love for the church, and our hope to one day be with God again one day. :)
Small? If it were small, it would be only a handful of priest but the number is more than that. If the Pope was serious about his "Zero tolerance rule" than he would address it more in his speeches instead of going against gay marriage and contraception. Renounced from the title of priest? That's it? They should be arrested and charged with pedophilia, just like any other pedophile. Including anyone who helps in trying to cover it up.
@MrSinister84 I thought the arresting part was pretty obvious but I guess I have to explain every little bit to you. By the way, this is almost not happening anymore since the rule. Sure, maybe people are bringing up what happened when they were little, but right now, in this current time, its almost never happening, (I don't keep track.) just because a man is a priest doesn't mean some of them will be creepy, and do that stuff.
Its not obvious because they don't get arrested most of the time. Because the church does not report all the abuse allegations to the civil authorities. There have even been instances when they just reassigned those accused to other locations where they continued to have contact with minors. Then the secrecy in Vatican proceedings and among bishops for those abuse cases doesn't help them. Just yesterday I read "German priest admits 280 counts of child abuse".
@MrSinister84 I wonder if Priests or seminarians know about 2 out of 3 non Catholics, are calling them pedophiles. It must hinder their thoughts on becoming a Priest because of this kind of discrimination. Am I going to doubt that the Church never fell, including the Priest molestation problem? No, of course we know it happened, but it must take pure courage for young men to become Priest because of this kind of discrimination. Pure courage and prayer to God.
Don't know if know but by the way they act towards there molestation problem, its either not a huge problem (which it is) or its not there fault. I even heard somewhere that they were blaming gay people or the people who got molested for the problem. The real courage comes from the people who got molested and for them to come forward.
"For those who spread lies about the Catholic Church: their ignorance is their lack of knowledge, their stupidity is their wisdom, and their truth is falsehood."
@truthfulreply I find atheist to be simpletons than cannot comprehend the complex. They see things like a child sees them.My child does not understand why we have to go down into the basement cause something invisable is coming and could tear down our house.even when you reply to them you have to explain thimgs to them, they dont seem to understand context of entire sentance.right now some atheist is saying"this religious nut is taking his kids in the basement cause he fears the invisable man"
The Holy Roman Catholic Church and Catholics have been under fire their entire existence. As long as there are those devote Catholics, like myself, out there, we will continue to be strong and united. We will continue to help those in need, even as you criticize our ethical and moral efforts to do so. We will continue to be against abortion, the use of condoms, sex out of wedlock, etc.
@davidpatrickstar You do realize that Catholicism has dominated Europe for almost two thousand years, don't you? Catholicism wouldn't exist if it weren't for Charlemagne forcing the entire Roman Empire to convert to Christianity and murdering anyone who didn't convert.
@tommygun88 You can't force someone to have faith. It just doesn't work that way. I don't know what religion you are, but you most-likely don't have the personal experience to understand. I would die for my faith, for God, the Church. Once again, Charlemagne was an individual, and, with all due respect, you might want to reanalyze his role in history.
@davidpatrickstar Cont. What about people like Osman I? Him and the empire he created probably killed many more than Charlemagne, whose goal was to spread Christianity throughout Europe, not murder everyone who disagreed with him or believed differently, as you say.
@davidpatrickstar You may not be able to force someone to have faith, but you can certainly force someone to have religion. And then brainwash them into thinking that if they don't accept, they will suffer eternal torment for not believing in something that there is absolutely no evidence for and for enjoying something that's completely natural and beneficial. I used to be Christian, and I mean very very Christian.
@tommygun88 If that was the case, if there wasn't something MORE there, religion -- Christianity -- would have died out long ago. However, Christianity is still the largest religion in the world, with numerous denominations, having faithful followers in every country of the world.
@davidpatrickstar Trust me, I had "personal experience", I experienced emotions, which I thought were a result of my faith. I know how you feel and that's how I used to feel. I know what his role was, he was the Holy Roman Emperor. I know my history. I know what it's like to be part of a church, several churches. I know what it's like to be absolutely convinced that what you believe is the only "truth" and that it's your mission to make everyone else believe it because
@tommygun88 And, this is where I'm kind of lost. So many people are under the impression that the Roman Catholic Church believes that anyone who isn't Catholic is going to Hell. In reality, you can be Muslim -- a murderer even -- and go to Heaven, believe it or not. The Church teaches that if you repent for your sins, and I mean truly and wholeheartedly repent upon death, spend your time in Purgatory, you can go to Heaven.
@davidpatrickstar Cont. It's what's in your heart and soul that matters. THAT'S what the Church teaches. Now, as I've said before, there are individuals who have their own opinions and voice them, as is their right, but the OFFICIAL teachings of the Church is as I've already stated.
@davidpatrickstar you are genuinely concerned about their souls. The very thought of eternal torment scares you and you are absolutely worried that your loved ones, friends, innocent people who have never done wrong their whole lives will suffer eternal torment because they don't believe in a god, or the "right god". I've lived through that, it sucks.
@tommygun88 I think I've already addressed this part in my previous comments. I hope it makes sense to you and everyone reading. It really kills me that people hate the Church so much because they think they know what it teaches when they really don't. It's just those certain individuals that leave those impressions and people think they speak for everyone. It's like Islamic extremists (Jihadists), there are peaceful, TRUE Muslims that are against the use of violence and hate.
@davidpatrickstar Now that my eyes have been opened, I was able to let that all go, and it's a huge relief. Now priorities have been straightened out. I know what it's like to want to make the authority you follow seem like as good and benevolent as you can rationalize when presented with evidence for the opposite.
@tommygun88 I, and any TRUE Catholic don't think any less of you because you've lost your faith. I wish people would understand that. And, foremost, I want to reiterate the fact that it's a two-way street. You don't want me to push my beliefs on you? I don't. Therefore, I expect you to show me and all Christians the same courtesy and refrain from bashing our religion. Don't try to take God away from those who have faith. That's just as reprehensible as people forcing their own beliefs on you.
@davidpatrickstar Cont. If you see a commercial released by the Catholic Church, for example, don't get "offended" and try to sue the station that allowed it to air. That's just silly. If you see a nativity scene in a public place, don't riot and demand that it be taken down. That's just silly. I don't tell you TO believe. So you shouldn't tell me NOT to believe, no matter what reason you may have for doing so. Two-way street. Fair enough?
@davidpatrickstar And then he marginalized the entire European Jewish community, forcing them to live in a ghetto, which does sound pretty familiar, doesn't it? Not to mention the dominance that the popes have had over Europe for centuries as well. They had an insane amount of political influence and any protestants were considered "heretics" and were burned at the stake. Also, there was the Spanish Inquisition, which was also Catholic.
@tommygun88 The Church still has great influence in the world. Vatican City (the Holy See) is a sovereign state, if you haven't already heard. It's responsible for conducting and overseeing numerous diplomatic negotiations, working in the favor of peace over violence. Millions of dollars (all coming together from every country in which Catholic souls dwell) are devoted to helping the poor, sick, and needy throughout the world, all of this organized by the Vatican and its associates.
@davidpatrickstar Cont. The Vatican, quite arguably, does so much more to help those in need than the much more powerful and wealthy United States government. If you consider the thousands of individual Catholic clergy, laypeople, churches, organizations, and faithful throughout the world.
@tommygun88 And in response to the Jewish comment. The Church has had dark eras in its past. Do you see Germany as an evil nation because of what occurred under the leadership of Hitler? The past is the past and, unfortunately, you can't change it.
@davidpatrickstar Cont. Sure, people were prosecuted. You can't blame the Roman Catholic Church. It's individual, human people. Just as Hitler was an individual person. Don't forget all the Catholics that have perished at the hands of Protestants, Jews and Muslims. You're ignorant because you fail to see the double standard. It's a two-way street. No one person, group, religion is at fault.
@davidpatrickstar Please tell me you've heard of them, right? And even today, the Catholic church is still trying to dictate how people should live their lives, even by telling people that they should not use certain things that could help their entire population. So, when you say that the Catholic Church has been under fire their entire existence, what does that mean?
@tommygun88 The Roman Catholic Church isn't "dictating" anyone. It does however have a doctrine, i.e. teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church, which I highly suggest you read, which the faithful, i.e. Catholics, follow and abide by. As for these things you're referring to. The Church values life and, therefore, is against abortion. As for condoms, you don't go around sleeping with the whole village/town/city/ and you shouldn't have to worry about using condoms, right? Right.
@davidpatrickstar Cont. Kind of coincides with the whole "don't have sex out of wedlock" thing, huh? The Church teaches that the main purpose of sex is procreation. You don't want a baby, don't have sex. Otherwise, the Church encourages natural family planning. Still, there are exceptions. Some birth control is used to assist women having menstrual problems and the Church fully recognizes and approves of this.
@davidpatrickstar It seems to me that non-Catholics (and non-Christians as well) have been under fire from the Catholic Church the entire time the Catholic Church has been around. Oh, and it was the Catholic Church that started the Crusades.
@tommygun88 Ignorance at its finest. First of all, I didn't say the Church was perfect. Man is flawed. Now, as for the Crusades. They began when Byzantine emperor of the time, Alexius I, pleaded for the help of then pope, Urban II, as they were being invaded by the Muslim Seljuq Turks, a violent and war-like people. Therefore, the Crusades were a product of the East seeking the help of the West, not because the Catholic Church is, or was, crazy for power/control. Funny how that works, isn't it?
Why is the Church releasing ads like this? One, because it can. Two, because ignorant anti-Christians and Christians alike have a misconceived view about the Church which they feel they need to force on everyone who feels differently. The Church has change greatly since the days prior to Vatican II. Just think, it's a much better alternative to the Radical Muslim approach. I don't see anyone considering that though.
This is ridiculous. Firstly, it's Pope Benedict XVI. Show some respect. Secondly, there is corruption within the Church, as there is every institution, government, etc. on Earth. Man is flawed. That doesn't mean that the Holy Father is protecting anyone from their sins. That doesn't mean that every individual who cries rape is being truthful. It's no secret that the Church has money. People will do anything for money.
Maher is a known Catholic hater and bigot. The hatred he has for Catholics is evident and he might as well wear a white hood because he could lead the KKK (yes, they existed to threaten Catholics and African Americans). He is, however, typical of so-called "tolerant" liberals. Tolerant of anyone he agrees with.
@rlr524 dude, comparing to him to the KKK is a little much. he doesn't want to burn you at the stake or hang you. he wants to laugh at you. and so do a lot of people. atheists had more than their fair share of falling victim to hate-crimes in the past, too.
@SophieBell8 Actually it's not "a little much." The outcome of hatred and bigotry doesn't matter a whole lot when the hatred and bigotry is spread by a man with a large microphone. Many homosexuals are child molesters, so let's just substitute homosexuals for Catholics in Maher's piece and see what you think. The acceptance of hatred by the atheist community is amazingly selective, and quite hypocritical.
@SophieBell8 And, by the way, I don't play the "it happens to others" or "they did it first" game. That's for children. Bigotry is wrong no matter the bigot or the recipient.
@rlr524 gees, i dont want a lecture or argument over a humorous youtube video. all im saying is dont get your panties in a knot, hes not showing any hatred. just annoyance. and annoyance is totally acceptable. im annoyed at your anger towards him, your annoyed at his semi-insensitive jokes, and hes annoyed that behind the scenes, children are getting molested. being annoyed with someone and hating them are very different things
@0rbis2010 Sorry. Not the same. 89 Orthodox Jews in NY < Thousands of Catholic victims over the world, in every country with a confirmed coverup that goes all the way up to the head guy, Ratzinger.
@DamonIcke It is the same. It's only different because extremist liberals who hate Christians wouldn't dare say something bad about the Jewish people. You're very selective in your bigotry. You hate Catholics and black babies.
@rlr524 I do hate catholics. I'm not ashamed to admit. I was forced to participate in catholic rituals as a child. I found them creepy then and I have an even lower opinion of them now. Growing up among them helps me recognize their sickness. I love my mom, but screw her church and her anti-semitism. Both sides of my family are polish-catholic and I can't honestly say I can name anyone who doesn't use either anti-semetic or racial slurs.
@rlr524 You're not interested because I'm an expert in catholic bullshit. My aunt the nun was a anti-semite of the Mel Gibson variety. i know a lot about you "folks".
Listen up, Bill Maher. It's not about "losing customers." It's about showing people the REAL truth about the Church. The scandals that have happened in the Church was because of irresponsible behavior not in accordance with the Church's teachings and it's people like YOU who've decided to make all Catholics look like hypocrites and make the Church seem like some company trying to appeal to the public. Out of so many people, you're in no position to make an accurate judgement of the Church.
@harshcliffdawg1 He has criticized Penn State. The difference is the Penn State people will be punished. They aren't a religion and will get no special protection.
Well heres the problem, the most prevailent time for child molestation for Catholic priests ISNT now! In fact, it was 50 years ago and MOST of these accusations are as old as 50 years. So Mahr's chart is wrong and its painfully clear that he didnt even do his research very well because if he did he'd known the NATURE of these accusations most of which are 50 years old, it was less than 3 that were even from this century. Also, you have a better chance getting molested by your doctor than priest
The difference between Christians and Muslims: we pray for people we think are going to Hell (like Bill Maher) so that they may repent and escape. When the Muslims think somebody is going to Hell they kill them to get them there faster.
Actually, God doesn't either. Maher himself does, at least in a sense. What I mean is he doesn't hate the prospect of Hell as much as hates God. Believe me, I've been in his place. Hell, for ordinary atheists as opposed to someone like Pol Pot, seems to be eternal darkness and loneliness, not flames. youtube.com/watch?v=XgF_iwUNqFU
@Jakareh75 How can a man hate something he doesn't believe exists? Atheism might be darkness and lonliness for you, in which case I wouldn't recommend it. The fact that your imaginary friend of choice happens to be an imagined deity that is still worshipped by billions of it's deluded followers doesn't change the fact that you are suffering from a mental illness. Saying that someone is going to suffer but you don't want them to, is the same as Mr. Garrison attributing his sexuality to Mr. Hat.
He's an ass...I think the abuse is horrible too as a Catholic. At the same time, it does not take away from our History, Tradition or Faith. It is like saying because some leaders are corrupt, democracy does not work. Should we abandon our faith because some leaders were corrupt. It is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ expressed through the Sacraments.
No they tried to cover it up all the way to the top. Moving around peodphiles to different churches instead of kicking them out. Which resulted in even more abuse. It was wide scale in several countries. Would this be excused if it was some national child care agency that did the same things?
@rationalsalvation not true..that is where you are ingorant. you do not know the facts, nor have a clue. back your claims up with documentation wise guy or shut the f up. you are just another ingorant, backwoods catholic basher. i would welcome an intelligent respectful debate but all that comes out of you is stupidity.
@oakking1 Oh, forgive me. I didn't realize you wanted an intelligent debate, no Ratzinger is not a pedophile, but he did indeed order the cover up with letters sent to the bishops when he was the prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith. Want proof? Why did Bernard Law disappear when he was supposed to be on trial? Where did he go? He went to Rome, the flight was paid for by the vatican. He's still there, too. So fuck you.
@rationalsalvation The fact of the matter is, the MAJORITY of these cases are FALSE, very few have been convicted. It seems in America at least because in Ireland, Germany etc.these are even front page news, Catholic priests are the only people who are guilty before convicted seriously. You're more likely to be molested by your doctor, teacher, farmers (rural areas I mean) or even your own spouse than you are by catholic priests, statistically speaking.
@GermanConquistador08 Where exactly are you getting this information? Besides, even if that were true, there is no global organization that protects rapist doctors, teachers or farmers. Even if there were only one priest in history who had ever molested a child, the fact is that it was covered up by the present administration of the vatican. If the vatican were a secular organization, it would have been closed down by now.
@rationalsalvation "there is no global organization that protects rapist doctors, teachers or farmers" - Theres no global organization that protects rapists in general. First of all, almost none of the cases of priestly molestation have been rapes. Secondly, doctors, teachers and farmers DO have organizations that protect them. Doctors have doctorate associations, Teachers have the teachers unions (which protect sex criminal teachers too) Local, national but not international true enough
@rationalsalvation Even if you disagree with the information, its also well known that the majority of sexual crimes take place between couples. Lastly, the Vatican doesnt actively cover up any sexual crime. They try to protect the priests and try to proclaim their innocence because generally thats how groups work. Sometimes they pick the losers and they mess up. Theres no reason to get mad at them for trying to enforce innocent before proven guilty, which is gone from most of these accusations.
@GermanConquistador08 I'm going to assume that you're a serious person and not just a catholic apologist, but if I'm understanding you correctly, you're just wrong. The vatican wasn't interested in "innocent until proven guilty", they knew that their priests were guilty, that's why they punished them (lol) by making them take penitence, but they hid their findings from the governments of the countries they were living in, and moved the priests so as not to get caught.
@rationalsalvation "you're a serious person and not just a catholic apologist" -Well if you're assuming that apologists cant be serious people, the thats your first mistake. No I'm not really an apologist since religion isnt my only field of interest. "they knew that their priests were guilty" - In diocese yes, bishops were aware of the situation and moved priests to different locations. That was condemned in almost all recently bishops conferances in both the US and Ireland.
@rationalsalvation Thats why in almost all recent conferences, the reasoning behind priest molestation, and seminaries have been teaching accordingly. The reason for this was the fact that in the 50s, 60s and 70s our culture became a lot more sex oriented and seminaries didnt prepare priests against it. Now they are, and you see very few recent accusations. Most of these accusations are up to 50 years old and the result of lack of seminary training up to poor diocese decision.
@rationalsalvation Secondly, "that's why they punished them" -Several priests were removed from service and some were moved. But the first was the actions of the Vatican, the former being actions of individual diocese not by direct order of the Pope or the Vatican. The Vatican has millions of priests and attendents to take care of, thats why they have intermediate leadership and trying to blame the higher ups for things intermediates were doing is a mistake that needs to be corrected.
@rationalsalvation To blame the Vatican for these things is completely false. First off, the Pope doesnt have absolute authority over archbishops and bishops, hell he wouldnt even have the time to coordinate any cover ups. Hes in his what 80s, writing books, traveling the world, giving speech after speech. You really think he has time to mastermind a conspiracy to cover up priest molestation? And no its not rape. Rape is the act of seuxal intercourse without the persons consent. Very different.
@GermanConquistador08 I repeat; child molestation is ALWAYS rape. Children have been raped and tortured by clergymen all over the world, and YES very recently, we're learning new horror stories everyday. Does Crimen Sollicitationis ring a bell? Ratzinger was in charge of the cover up for twenty years, this is a proven matter of fact, if the vatican were a secular organization it would have been closed by now and Ratzinger would be in jail.
@rationalsalvation "child molestation is ALWAYS rape" -No its not. Sodomy would be rape, but sodomy is almost never attributed to priestly molestation. Very few cases involve actual sexual intercourse. At this point, I'm using concrete terms. If you're using your own terminology, fine but its wrong. "Children have been raped and tortured by clergymen all over the world" -Tortured? Bit hyperbole. And again, statistically speaking so are doctors and teachers. Government employees etc. etc.
@rationalsalvation The fact of the matter is, priestly sexual crimes are blown WAY out of proportion to the point of insanity. "Crimen Sollicitationis' - You do realize that was replaced in 2001? "this is a proven matter of fact" -No it isnt, and saying it is doesnt prove it. "if the vatican were a secular organization it would have been closed by now and Ratzinger would be in jail." - Thats like saying the teachers unions should be closed down. Seriously, you're exaggerating the issue.
@rationalsalvation This kind of exaggeration of accusations against Catholic clergy, a vast majority of cases being false mind you which you do NOT take into account, the fact that theres no concrete evidene linking a Vatican coverup and the massive injustice and sterotype given to priests is not only delaying the issue, it insults REAL victems of sexual crime everywhere.
@GermanConquistador08 That's very clever, but considering how many children HAVE been raped (sodomized) and tortured by catholic priests in almost every country on the planet, you have no right to appeal to the emotions of rape victims for your own ends. When Ratzinger was a cardinal, he wrote letters to bishops around the world telling them that SHOULD any of their priests molest any children that they are NOT to go to the authorities lest they be excommunicated.
@rationalsalvation "That's very clever" - No, its just clear definition. "considering how many children HAVE been raped" - About one fourth and thats only ALLEGATIONS not convictions, the conviction rates are much lower. "you have no right to appeal to the emotions of rape victims for your own ends" -And you have no right to do the same to generalization against all Catholics, all priests or the Pope which is what this whole arguement is based on, on your side.
@GermanConquistador08 Calling out the pope and all of the pedophiles he is protecting is NOT generalizing against all mainstream catholics, although they do show their true colours when they defend them like you are. You can find the letters on the internet, they are now in possession of the American authorities. The pope has just been charged in Germany, so fuck you and your sick cult!
@rationalsalvation "NOT generalizing against all mainstream catholics" - "all of the pedophiles he is protecting" - I rest my case on that issue. I was talking about the clergy, not the laypeople. But yes, CLEARLY the pope HIMSELF without any help were protecting pehophile bishops for all the gains he would get.. Seriouslys. Think about it a little bit. "The pope has just been charged in Germany"- ...no he hasnt. He's been back there several times. Your hatred of the pope is getting the better
@rationalsalvation Of you that is. Also "so fuck you and your sick cult!" -very nice, very mature. You call out the pope on false allegations and then tell anyone who disagrees with you to fuck themselves. Also "your sick cult" - Yeah, you're not generalizing mainstream Catholics. What a hypocrite you are.
@GermanConquistador08 What do you people expect? I have yet to speak to any catholic who has shown any disgust for what has happened, they just go into denial like you. True colours shining through. Check out what Bill Donohue has to say, you echo his sentiments, sicko!
@rationalsalvation "I have yet to speak to any catholic who has shown any disgust for what has happened" - Of course the Catholic world is disgusted by priestly molestation, it HAS happened, it shouldnt happen, and it should and has been addressed in the seminaries and pulpits. The problem for me and many other catholics is the tar and feather mentality of people like you who believe that the Pope is behind it all, and that every accusation is true etc.etc. without even giving the HINT of...

@rationalsalvation ...a suggestion that the majority of these cases are false accusations, and a product of the culture NOT Catholic teaching, ministry, doctrines etc. Using this as ammunition against the CHURCH ITSELF is what is insanity. "True colours shining through" - Of humility, changing what doesnt work, apology and the implimentation of solutions? Yeah, I guess so. "sicko!" - Someone with your mindset will use anything against a group that you dislike, thats whats truely sick.
@GermanConquistador08 Some statements are self discrediting and require no further comment from me. Your clergy are now finally being arrested one by one all over the world, that might bring some modicum of relief to their victims.
@rationalsalvation "Some statements are self discrediting" - READ this statement "SOME of your statements are SELF discrediting" I've seen some cop outs in my discussions but I've never seen one so clumsily pulled out before. "Your clergy are now finally being arrested one by one all over the world, that." - Youre hatred of the largest charity group in the world is quite disterbing. I wonder how those under care of Catholic clergy will thank you if your dream ever comes true. You are truely sick
@GermanConquistador08 Ah, the charity thing. You mean the money they put back into the countries they are still fucking up, like Africa for example. Now tell me how my last statement was clumsy. Some statements ARE self discrediting, like yours for instance.
@rationalsalvation "You mean the money they put back into the countries they are still fucking up, like Africa for example." -how are they "fucking up" Africa when they literally provide the most charity to Africa in ACTUAL SUPPORT to the people that they cannot make themselves, namely medical supplies unlike the UN which is mostly food aid that destroys native African farms. "Some statements ARE self discrediting" -They're call contradictions, and I'd love for you to find mine.
Maher gets confused again. The ad was not made by the Church (as an institution) but by some lay Catholics. By any objective standard it's a good ad.
The funniest part of Maher's clip was the look of discomfort in Maher's guests, as if they knew Maher was expecting them to laugh but they couldn't because they knew Maher was, as usual, being a knob.
Not surprisingly Maher didn't mention that in 2009 the US had 70 000 cases of child sex abuse, six of them were caused by Catholic Priests.
And if any of those 70 thousand cases had had the sort of organized attempt to cover up and destroy evidence, to delay and obstruct justice, to shift abusers to new locales where they could continue to abuse new victims, then you'd be hearing about it too. As it is, Ratzinger was IN CHARGE of doing these sorts of things in his diocese, and he is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for loosing these pedophiles on new victims.
Bill Maher has a point. There is no smoke without fire. If his ad didn't makes sense, why did it infuriate the catholics? It is because his ad has a point to make (worldwide proven child abuse by catholic priests) that it has given a kick to the catholic's conscience, which is always dull because it is always in denial.
Disgusting, you are an offense to abuse victims as much as their abusers, this is not a joking matter! I wonder what kind of moral lifestyle Bill Maher lives? Probably he is more immaculate that the Virgin Mary.
@TheDenker64 I don't understand your point. Catholics do not worship false gods, idols, or statues. They also do not keep the sabbath as understood by the Israelites. This was the last day of the week. Christ is the central point of salvation history. He ushered in a new cosmic reality. But since I am draped in ignorance, please tell me which verses of Leviticus are literally true for me today and which ones are not! I am most concerned about the penalties for sins in chapter 20.
Catholics do not create fake Gods... we only worship one God and promote the art of my Christian heritage and stories through paints and sculptures... what is wrong with that... they are not gods but rather artistic expressions.
I'm apalled by repsonses here by both Catholics and atheists.
Catholics: you can't pray away problems. Prayer is to help discern and comntemplate on what's wrong and how to fix it, through deeds. Go helps those who helps themselves.
Atheists: read the statistics on sex abuse in the Catholic Church and then on sex abuse, in the general population. Also, not that Bill Maher (Mr. Fact) says this commercial came out recently, when in reality, it came out over 3 years before this was filmed.

What will Maher do about that, put an end to fathering children?
dlsadler 2 months ago

Catholicism...destroyed indigenous cultures around the world, converted non-Catholics at sword point, opposed the advent of scientific discovery, killed thousands during the Inquisition, promotes the spread of STDs by opposing condoms, and has resulted in the molestation of little boys around the world.
siZors 2 months ago
@siZors
MrSinister84 2 months ago
@MrSinister84 Okay, the number of Catholic Priests that molested boys, is a small number ( keeping in mind that there are millions of Catholic Priests in the world ). The Pope has enforced a "Zero tolerance rule", which means that if this ever happens, they will be renounced as their title from Priest. However, this topic is NOT what the Catholic church is all about. It is about our faith and trust in God, our love for the church, and our hope to one day be with God again one day. :)
Tonganpride1000 1 month ago
@Tonganpride1000
MrSinister84 1 month ago
@MrSinister84 I thought the arresting part was pretty obvious but I guess I have to explain every little bit to you. By the way, this is almost not happening anymore since the rule. Sure, maybe people are bringing up what happened when they were little, but right now, in this current time, its almost never happening, (I don't keep track.) just because a man is a priest doesn't mean some of them will be creepy, and do that stuff.
Tonganpride1000 1 month ago
@Tonganpride1000
MrSinister84 1 month ago
@MrSinister84 I wonder if Priests or seminarians know about 2 out of 3 non Catholics, are calling them pedophiles. It must hinder their thoughts on becoming a Priest because of this kind of discrimination. Am I going to doubt that the Church never fell, including the Priest molestation problem? No, of course we know it happened, but it must take pure courage for young men to become Priest because of this kind of discrimination. Pure courage and prayer to God.

We will continue to help those in need, even as you criticize our ethical and moral efforts to do so. We will continue to be against abortion, the use of condoms, sex out of wedlock, etc.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar You do realize that Catholicism has dominated Europe for almost two thousand years, don't you? Catholicism wouldn't exist if it weren't for Charlemagne forcing the entire Roman Empire to convert to Christianity and murdering anyone who didn't convert.
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 You can't force someone to have faith. It just doesn't work that way. I don't know what religion you are, but you most-likely don't have the personal experience to understand. I would die for my faith, for God, the Church. Once again, Charlemagne was an individual, and, with all due respect, you might want to reanalyze his role in history.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. What about people like Osman I? Him and the empire he created probably killed many more than Charlemagne, whose goal was to spread Christianity throughout Europe, not murder everyone who disagreed with him or believed differently, as you say.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar You may not be able to force someone to have faith, but you can certainly force someone to have religion. And then brainwash them into thinking that if they don't accept, they will suffer eternal torment for not believing in something that there is absolutely no evidence for and for enjoying something that's completely natural and beneficial. I used to be Christian, and I mean very very Christian.
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 If that was the case, if there wasn't something MORE there, religion -- Christianity -- would have died out long ago. However, Christianity is still the largest religion in the world, with numerous denominations, having faithful followers in every country of the world.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Trust me, I had "personal experience", I experienced emotions, which I thought were a result of my faith. I know how you feel and that's how I used to feel. I know what his role was, he was the Holy Roman Emperor. I know my history. I know what it's like to be part of a church, several churches. I know what it's like to be absolutely convinced that what you believe is the only "truth" and that it's your mission to make everyone else believe it because
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 And, this is where I'm kind of lost. So many people are under the impression that the Roman Catholic Church believes that anyone who isn't Catholic is going to Hell. In reality, you can be Muslim -- a murderer even -- and go to Heaven, believe it or not. The Church teaches that if you repent for your sins, and I mean truly and wholeheartedly repent upon death, spend your time in Purgatory, you can go to Heaven.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. It's what's in your heart and soul that matters. THAT'S what the Church teaches. Now, as I've said before, there are individuals who have their own opinions and voice them, as is their right, but the OFFICIAL teachings of the Church is as I've already stated.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar you are genuinely concerned about their souls. The very thought of eternal torment scares you and you are absolutely worried that your loved ones, friends, innocent people who have never done wrong their whole lives will suffer eternal torment because they don't believe in a god, or the "right god". I've lived through that, it sucks.
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 I think I've already addressed this part in my previous comments. I hope it makes sense to you and everyone reading. It really kills me that people hate the Church so much because they think they know what it teaches when they really don't. It's just those certain individuals that leave those impressions and people think they speak for everyone. It's like Islamic extremists (Jihadists), there are peaceful, TRUE Muslims that are against the use of violence and hate.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. It's just that sect whose absolutely despicable actions have left horrible impressions.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Now that my eyes have been opened, I was able to let that all go, and it's a huge relief. Now priorities have been straightened out. I know what it's like to want to make the authority you follow seem like as good and benevolent as you can rationalize when presented with evidence for the opposite.
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 I, and any TRUE Catholic don't think any less of you because you've lost your faith. I wish people would understand that. And, foremost, I want to reiterate the fact that it's a two-way street. You don't want me to push my beliefs on you? I don't. Therefore, I expect you to show me and all Christians the same courtesy and refrain from bashing our religion. Don't try to take God away from those who have faith. That's just as reprehensible as people forcing their own beliefs on you.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. Fair enough?
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar And then he marginalized the entire European Jewish community, forcing them to live in a ghetto, which does sound pretty familiar, doesn't it? Not to mention the dominance that the popes have had over Europe for centuries as well. They had an insane amount of political influence and any protestants were considered "heretics" and were burned at the stake. Also, there was the Spanish Inquisition, which was also Catholic.
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 The Church still has great influence in the world. Vatican City (the Holy See) is a sovereign state, if you haven't already heard. It's responsible for conducting and overseeing numerous diplomatic negotiations, working in the favor of peace over violence. Millions of dollars (all coming together from every country in which Catholic souls dwell) are devoted to helping the poor, sick, and needy throughout the world, all of this organized by the Vatican and its associates.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. The Vatican, quite arguably, does so much more to help those in need than the much more powerful and wealthy United States government. If you consider the thousands of individual Catholic clergy, laypeople, churches, organizations, and faithful throughout the world.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@tommygun88 And in response to the Jewish comment. The Church has had dark eras in its past. Do you see Germany as an evil nation because of what occurred under the leadership of Hitler? The past is the past and, unfortunately, you can't change it.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. No one person, group, religion is at fault.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Please tell me you've heard of them, right? And even today, the Catholic church is still trying to dictate how people should live their lives, even by telling people that they should not use certain things that could help their entire population. So, when you say that the Catholic Church has been under fire their entire existence, what does that mean?
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 The Roman Catholic Church isn't "dictating" anyone. It does however have a doctrine, i.e. teachings and beliefs of the Catholic Church, which I highly suggest you read, which the faithful, i.e. Catholics, follow and abide by. As for these things you're referring to. The Church values life and, therefore, is against abortion. As for condoms, you don't go around sleeping with the whole village/town/city/ and you shouldn't have to worry about using condoms, right? Right.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar Cont. Kind of coincides with the whole "don't have sex out of wedlock" thing, huh? The Church teaches that the main purpose of sex is procreation. You don't want a baby, don't have sex. Otherwise, the Church encourages natural family planning. Still, there are exceptions. Some birth control is used to assist women having menstrual problems and the Church fully recognizes and approves of this.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
@davidpatrickstar It seems to me that non-Catholics (and non-Christians as well) have been under fire from the Catholic Church the entire time the Catholic Church has been around. Oh, and it was the Catholic Church that started the Crusades.
tommygun88 2 months ago
@tommygun88 Ignorance at its finest. First of all, I didn't say the Church was perfect. Man is flawed. Now, as for the Crusades. They began when Byzantine emperor of the time, Alexius I, pleaded for the help of then pope, Urban II, as they were being invaded by the Muslim Seljuq Turks, a violent and war-like people. Therefore, the Crusades were a product of the East seeking the help of the West, not because the Catholic Church is, or was, crazy for power/control. Funny how that works, isn't it?
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago
Why is the Church releasing ads like this? One, because it can. Two, because ignorant anti-Christians and Christians alike have a misconceived view about the Church which they feel they need to force on everyone who feels differently. The Church has change greatly since the days prior to Vatican II. Just think, it's a much better alternative to the Radical Muslim approach. I don't see anyone considering that though.
davidpatrickstar 2 months ago

SophieBell8 2 months ago
@SophieBell8 Actually it's not "a little much." The outcome of hatred and bigotry doesn't matter a whole lot when the hatred and bigotry is spread by a man with a large microphone. Many homosexuals are child molesters, so let's just substitute homosexuals for Catholics in Maher's piece and see what you think. The acceptance of hatred by the atheist community is amazingly selective, and quite hypocritical.

Jakareh75 3 months ago

It is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ expressed through the Sacraments.
oakking1 4 months ago
@oakking1
No they tried to cover it up all the way to the top. Moving around peodphiles to different churches instead of kicking them out. Which resulted in even more abuse. It was wide scale in several countries. Would this be excused if it was some national child care agency that did the same things?

oakking1 3 months ago
@oakking1 Oh, forgive me. I didn't realize you wanted an intelligent debate, no Ratzinger is not a pedophile, but he did indeed order the cover up with letters sent to the bishops when he was the prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith. Want proof? Why did Bernard Law disappear when he was supposed to be on trial? Where did he go? He went to Rome, the flight was paid for by the vatican. He's still there, too. So fuck you.
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation The fact of the matter is, the MAJORITY of these cases are FALSE, very few have been convicted. It seems in America at least because in Ireland, Germany etc.these are even front page news, Catholic priests are the only people who are guilty before convicted seriously. You're more likely to be molested by your doctor, teacher, farmers (rural areas I mean) or even your own spouse than you are by catholic priests, statistically speaking.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@GermanConquistador08 Where exactly are you getting this information? Besides, even if that were true, there is no global organization that protects rapist doctors, teachers or farmers. Even if there were only one priest in history who had ever molested a child, the fact is that it was covered up by the present administration of the vatican. If the vatican were a secular organization, it would have been closed down by now.
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation "there is no global organization that protects rapist doctors, teachers or farmers" - Theres no global organization that protects rapists in general. First of all, almost none of the cases of priestly molestation have been rapes. Secondly, doctors, teachers and farmers DO have organizations that protect them. Doctors have doctorate associations, Teachers have the teachers unions (which protect sex criminal teachers too) Local, national but not international true enough
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation Even if you disagree with the information, its also well known that the majority of sexual crimes take place between couples. Lastly, the Vatican doesnt actively cover up any sexual crime. They try to protect the priests and try to proclaim their innocence because generally thats how groups work. Sometimes they pick the losers and they mess up. Theres no reason to get mad at them for trying to enforce innocent before proven guilty, which is gone from most of these accusations.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@GermanConquistador08 I'm going to assume that you're a serious person and not just a catholic apologist, but if I'm understanding you correctly, you're just wrong. The vatican wasn't interested in "innocent until proven guilty", they knew that their priests were guilty, that's why they punished them (lol) by making them take penitence, but they hid their findings from the governments of the countries they were living in, and moved the priests so as not to get caught.
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation "you're a serious person and not just a catholic apologist" -Well if you're assuming that apologists cant be serious people, the thats your first mistake. No I'm not really an apologist since religion isnt my only field of interest. "they knew that their priests were guilty" - In diocese yes, bishops were aware of the situation and moved priests to different locations. That was condemned in almost all recently bishops conferances in both the US and Ireland.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation Thats why in almost all recent conferences, the reasoning behind priest molestation, and seminaries have been teaching accordingly. The reason for this was the fact that in the 50s, 60s and 70s our culture became a lot more sex oriented and seminaries didnt prepare priests against it. Now they are, and you see very few recent accusations. Most of these accusations are up to 50 years old and the result of lack of seminary training up to poor diocese decision.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@GermanConquistador08 Futhermore, child molesting is ALWAYS rape!
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation Secondly, "that's why they punished them" -Several priests were removed from service and some were moved. But the first was the actions of the Vatican, the former being actions of individual diocese not by direct order of the Pope or the Vatican. The Vatican has millions of priests and attendents to take care of, thats why they have intermediate leadership and trying to blame the higher ups for things intermediates were doing is a mistake that needs to be corrected.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation To blame the Vatican for these things is completely false. First off, the Pope doesnt have absolute authority over archbishops and bishops, hell he wouldnt even have the time to coordinate any cover ups. Hes in his what 80s, writing books, traveling the world, giving speech after speech. You really think he has time to mastermind a conspiracy to cover up priest molestation? And no its not rape. Rape is the act of seuxal intercourse without the persons consent. Very different.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@GermanConquistador08 I repeat; child molestation is ALWAYS rape. Children have been raped and tortured by clergymen all over the world, and YES very recently, we're learning new horror stories everyday. Does Crimen Sollicitationis ring a bell? Ratzinger was in charge of the cover up for twenty years, this is a proven matter of fact, if the vatican were a secular organization it would have been closed by now and Ratzinger would be in jail.
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation "child molestation is ALWAYS rape" -No its not. Sodomy would be rape, but sodomy is almost never attributed to priestly molestation. Very few cases involve actual sexual intercourse. At this point, I'm using concrete terms. If you're using your own terminology, fine but its wrong. "Children have been raped and tortured by clergymen all over the world" -Tortured? Bit hyperbole. And again, statistically speaking so are doctors and teachers. Government employees etc. etc.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation The fact of the matter is, priestly sexual crimes are blown WAY out of proportion to the point of insanity. "Crimen Sollicitationis' - You do realize that was replaced in 2001? "this is a proven matter of fact" -No it isnt, and saying it is doesnt prove it. "if the vatican were a secular organization it would have been closed by now and Ratzinger would be in jail." - Thats like saying the teachers unions should be closed down. Seriously, you're exaggerating the issue.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation This kind of exaggeration of accusations against Catholic clergy, a vast majority of cases being false mind you which you do NOT take into account, the fact that theres no concrete evidene linking a Vatican coverup and the massive injustice and sterotype given to priests is not only delaying the issue, it insults REAL victems of sexual crime everywhere.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@GermanConquistador08 That's very clever, but considering how many children HAVE been raped (sodomized) and tortured by catholic priests in almost every country on the planet, you have no right to appeal to the emotions of rape victims for your own ends. When Ratzinger was a cardinal, he wrote letters to bishops around the world telling them that SHOULD any of their priests molest any children that they are NOT to go to the authorities lest they be excommunicated.
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation "That's very clever" - No, its just clear definition. "considering how many children HAVE been raped" - About one fourth and thats only ALLEGATIONS not convictions, the conviction rates are much lower. "you have no right to appeal to the emotions of rape victims for your own ends" -And you have no right to do the same to generalization against all Catholics, all priests or the Pope which is what this whole arguement is based on, on your side.
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@GermanConquistador08 Calling out the pope and all of the pedophiles he is protecting is NOT generalizing against all mainstream catholics, although they do show their true colours when they defend them like you are. You can find the letters on the internet, they are now in possession of the American authorities. The pope has just been charged in Germany, so fuck you and your sick cult!
rationalsalvation 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation "NOT generalizing against all mainstream catholics" - "all of the pedophiles he is protecting" - I rest my case on that issue. I was talking about the clergy, not the laypeople. But yes, CLEARLY the pope HIMSELF without any help were protecting pehophile bishops for all the gains he would get.. Seriouslys. Think about it a little bit. "The pope has just been charged in Germany"- ...no he hasnt. He's been back there several times. Your hatred of the pope is getting the better
GermanConquistador08 3 months ago
@rationalsalvation Of you that is. Also "so fuck you and your sick cult!" -very nice, very mature. @rationalsalvation ...a suggestion that the majority of these cases are false accusations, and a product of the culture NOT Catholic teaching, ministry, doctrines etc. Using this as ammunition against the CHURCH ITSELF is what is insanity.
Jerrymanda101 5 months ago
@Jerrymanda101
