I worked for Richard during the last few years of his life, and as part of my job conducted the back-stage banda for his final Australian performances. The work was Janacek's opera "The Makropulos Case". He was under terrific strain - the press campaign against him was taking a heavy toll on his spirits, but still he was enthusiastic. The final pages of Emilia Marty's soliloquey about life and death were the final things he conducted at the Sydney Opera House. It will always haunt me.
future conductors listen up!!

His recordings of British music are the reason that British classical music is on a revival & rightly so because it's so under-rated

What a privilege to attend the Hickox/Philharmonia VW series last year and such a tragic loss of a champion of British music.

I shall save these clips to remember such a wonderful musician, but more than that, a lovely and inclusive human being.
