I had a thought the other day. What if, for some reason, all the oil to the United States was cut off? We would survive, and very nicely. How? We would dust off all the blueprints to the old steam locomotives. I believe the last major development of this mode of locomotion took place in the 1950's. This "archaic" technology could save our country some day. Steam engines are relatively simple to make, and there is a plentiful fuel supply.
you seem like a malcontent. Are you stuck in a dead end job. Go to school and stop being a men's room attendant at the county fairs. you can do better than that I hope. In the meanwhile, make sure the the WalMart toilets are clean at Middleton, NY
im gonna go see 3985 this wednesday downtown when it makes its stop here in sioux city. and in my opnion its not right to destroy a peice of history no matter how old and antiquated it is its part of america and i never wanna see it die.
I was very glad to have caught the Challenger at Clinton, Iowa.
Couldn't help but think that day when the Challenger stepped over into Illinois, the amount of vibration the bridge operator was feeling...4 pistons hammering over 1 million pounds of iron heading full bore into the Overland Route
The amount of smoke is deliberate to please railfans and spectators. A properly fired locomotive makes very little smoke. Since this is an oil-fired locomotive the excessive smoke is generated by an improper fuel/air mixture. But it is a great video.
I also thought that the amount of smoke produced by a large steam locomotive was dependant on load thats put on the engine.
When i chased 844 a few years ago, to please the fans they removed the helper diesel on one of the larger grades and the 844 put out way more smoke when it was on the grade, i think becuase of the larger load.
Better to cleanly, efficiently burn the coal and generatelectricity to power electric locomotives.
Steam locomotives are very inefficient and require much maintainence.

Anthrosite coal burns cleaner why they made the challenger and 844 burn fuel oil coal is more efficient than oil

the only thing that would keep us from using these trains is the high amount of smoke that comes out. its bad for the ecosystem

I did not know that bit of information regarding fuel air mixture and "show" smoke. One learns something new every day. Thanks.
