Just saw Further perform this in Boston & was surprised at how bittersweet it was & how emotional I got! I think JK is doing an amazing job both playing & singing Jerry's tunes, but Jerry has a poignant wistfulness to his vocals when doing this song, truly a world weary traveller reflecting on his life...brilliant! thanks for posting...
Beautiful noodles from Jerry on this. such a melodic piece of music to start. played well it is transcendent... and by the way, where does the need to bring up bobby even come into this, anyways. He is laying low during the whole thing...
weir as a 'rhythm guitarist' is at least the dynamic equivalent of garcia as 'lead'--there are times that i think weir easily eclipses garcia which is uncommon in a typical band format...
when i hear this song i automatically remember 'ashes and glass' because they both use the symbol of the ring
I remember this show... crisp spring night, was miracled in.. and had a blast.. one of the better shows from this tour....I remember Healy lettin the tapers patch into the sb... rock on!
It's great that we can see these clips on YouTube. Jerry Garcia was truly a genius and an American legend; it's horrible that he hasn't been around for 14 years!
Just like they said Dimaggio made it look like he wasn't trying. The greatest musician in world history. His playing transcended all logical beliefs and boundaries.
kdiamond: if he was faking it ya think he would actually act like he was playing instead of resting he's hand on th guitar ... i sec th other cat in ya need to get a clue
Jerry is talking about learning to play the music inside that spins your life. He is saying that all you can do is let your light out and let the inner and outer tansformation take place. Don't judge it.
The lyrics work as three stanza poems they do not necessarily hang together as a whole song. They are suggestive I think that's why Jerry loved the song so much it invokes the great mystery
.....when they did Crazy Fingers I knew I could close my eyes and DRIFT along and just be HELD by the melody and Jerrys voice...DREAM....FLOAT.....and always a soft landing....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I never said he fakes all the time. He does play, obviously.
But on DVD's, there are many times where I see him singing and strumming, but NOT HITTING THE STRINGS.
Now, that means only one thing moron. And why do you think Jerry plays 95% of the solos? Yes, Bobby is the "rhythm" guitarist, because he CAN'T play any leads or solos, because his talent is considerably limited. Do you get it now? Have you got the "clue" yet?
I agree with everything you've written, but also want to add that I think Jerry strums at times without hitting the strings just a reflexive for keeping along with the rhythm (like tapping one's foot) There is no faking involved whatsoever, and I know you know and meant that. :)
@setboy1 I can't believe I just read that either....and the "example" he points out is....well...head-shakingly painful. Anyone who thinks Weir is/was "just" a rhythm guitarist, or without substantial talent....well, no real reason to say anything to them, so I'll stop now.
Dammm, what a show!! You are lucky to have been there filming. I miss Jerry sooo much! I'm lucky to have seen him in the 80's & early 90. We have a Jerry & Bob endorsed Grateful Dead tribute band close to where I live & I see them every week, sometimes 2x & of course have my The Dead tix for LA Forum 5-9-09
Why would you lump every single Dead fan into 1 catagory & only see the negative people & let that influence your decision. If you go through the world like this you will miss out on alot of good stuff, I know!
thanks for posting this. this is one of my all-time favorite shows. the sound at the Dean Dome was INCREDIBLE! i wandered around the whole venue both nights and never found a bad spot for the sound. with they'd been invited back...
I was at this show in Vegas and this is one of the best live Crazy Fingers I've seen. Improvisational jam at the end is incredible...the crwod was mesmerized...
man the chords are easy, but the solo is fricken hard cause the chord keep changing so the root and scale is always changing.. freak an AY! GO JERRRY GO!
This was the first DSBD I ever heard. Best tape I had for a long time! This one and MSG with Branford. This was the highlight of the show for me too. TYVM
I'm kind young and pretty new to the dead, but I absolutely love this song! Theres something so magical about it! I put up my own cover of it. I would appreciate any feedback of my version!
this song is poetry... thank you RH for writing the words, jerry for the music, and delivering it in a way that gives me goosebumps and makes me cry every time I hear it...
Thank you jerry... for helping me through all the tough times.
How many other songs could receive 106 likes with 0 dislikes? I loved Jerry's session from 4:14 to 5:20.
