Yeah, but this was the first time you would have seen him. They didn't want him cute the first time you saw him. I like this scene, dont get me wrong, but it feels too homey, like nothing's wrong... and theres a lot going really bad. I like the one they did put in the movie better in terms of the story.

Hmm good point maybe this scene suits another story line or plot, maybe it might pop up in the new series coming up. Also maybe they wanted splinter to have a sense of awe around him, as I felt as a kid first watching the original turtles movie, you feel that splinter was old and wise from the first scene onwards... this makes him more like a regular dad that just wants some cake.
