According to Wikipedia, the lyrics explore Judeo-Christian themes. The Weiss brother's are of Jewish descent, but raised in a Sufi Muslim household. Their mother converted from the Episcopal church, and their father converted from Judaism.

Weiss also stated he doesn't view the band as a Christian band.

Jesus is not simply an object of the mind, if thats the term you want to use to define characters such as santa. Santa never existed in history (as we think of santa in pop culture). Jesus did. He died on a cross and rose from the dead, was and is worshiped (even pagan historians attest to this - cf letter to trajan) so to put him on the same level as santa and the easter bunny is historically, philosophically, and theologically inaccurate.
