@Misshappybutterfly However, Gedda's voice never sounds truly French. It has a rather dry sound and does not have the sensuality of Thill, DesVriès and Vanzo. This young artist was French to the nth. This is sung with the true "voix mixte" that was taught long, long ago
Alain Vanzo is the best Nadir I've ever heard. This lovely aria, the wonderful duet "Au fond du temple saint," and the underrated "De mon amie fleur endormie" from the same opera... these suited Vanzo's delicate timbre and picture-perfect legato to a tee. This version is a wonderful addition. Many thanks to the person who posted it!
No problem, since I have the whole opera, I'll post ''the underrated "De mon amie fleur endormie"'' when I have some free time. It is really nice, I guess is not performed more often nor addressed as an aria, since it is abruptly finished by the duet... just my guess
I love this piece intensely so I listened to all the great singers' versions available here. my choices of preference are Nicolai Gedda, Gigli and of course alain vanzo. Amazing....
I must say I think Gigli could have, but he didn't, basically his recording of this is out of stile and sung in Italian, I also think that he possessed the vocal skills required to properly sing this, but maybe not the ambition and or will, to bring this piece to perfection. Vanzo is on the other hand not as versatile has Gigli, but is on his element, and shows why there are some pieces that must be performed the way the composer indicated. Vanzo was a great singer, and king on this aria.
This is what I think; Gigli was a full liric, Vanzo is a light liric. This piece is intended for a french light liric. Dont think the original key would be comfortable for Gigli.
Alain Vanzo merveilleuse voix j'adore merci

This is his song! Not even Gigli can touch him here.

So lucky that the sound quality of the Netherlands was soooo excellent so early on. Best version of this aria ever.
