@Deckswax bass players in jamaican music usually just sit back and groove but you have some exceptions Like listen to aston Barett's stuff (bob marley and the wailers) his basslines change constantly through the course of the song lol
@3star2nr Ok, but i'm really thinking about in this context (Jazz-Ska) I see space in this set where Brevette and the drummer could've expressed themselves as well, unlike in the past when it was a one track tape and two minutes of playing time.
BTW: chaps the 1965 Studio One version is my favorite.
@Deckswax There may be times as far as musical arrangement when there could be a bridge for a bass and/or drum solo, but the Skatelites still consider themselves a dance-hall band, and to keep the people dancing (and they still dance!) the rhythm backbone needs to stay tight. At the end of the shows, and the members are announced, they get mad props; they didn't show off, but after a whole set, everyone loves on them, and knows that they're mad powerhouses supplying a deep groove.
not as good as the original? this is music man! and other style...here you have improvisation, i mean, real music...not a music that has been done for a film...
@wodoza Sad news out of Kingston, Jamaica today as original The Skatalites drummer Lloyd Knibb has passed away after a battle with liver cancer. He was 80.
@curtesm45 What!!! Oh dear!... i've always considered Knibbs to be up there with all the great drummers no matter what the idiom.
When he wasn't on a session you could tell straight away. Boom! thunk! the shimmering cymbals you know... Burro-Ska, Mambo-Ska, or regular Ska & ballads Lloyd was it, the master.
Funky, but I don't think I'll be listening to it again anytime soon

Some nice soloing on there. Poor Brevette never gets to solo, Jamaican Jazz don't allow for the bassman to free up.
BTW : who is the brother on guitar?
Deckswax 1 year ago
@Deckswax
the guitar player is Devon James I think
