Talk about a movie that doesnt stand the test of time... I watched this last night on the late show and its just plain awful... it was apparent that the counter culture was in full effect trying to push its agenda with drug use, homo sexuality and language instead of focusing on a plot. great title for a movie,, but thats about it.
@flycentro123 Hell of a good thing for you that it isn't :-D And oh no! Did you call me a "fag"? *gasp* You sad little child - only someone as insecure and stupid as you considers such childishness hurtful.
@flycentro123 to think that a movie that address the nihlistic times we live in and the coldness of modern society , doesn't "stand the test of time" is a simplistict view and a naive one. how old are you and how far did you get in school?
@flycentro123 Your an idiot, I doubt you even saw the film... the film was not about "counter culture" it was just one scene... as far as the homosexuality, the Joe Buck charactor was a male hooker, and a few of his clients were gay. the film is about an unlikely friendship. Now go back and watch your "Three Stooges" marathon on amc!
@DickCabeza123 Nobody was ready for that scene. I remember reading a book about how Joe Buck questioned his sexuality because the young man turned him on. That "Young Man" was Paul Jabara who wrote "Last Dance" for Donna Summer that was in that Disco Movie "Thank God It's Friday" that won The Oscar in 1979 beating out "Hopelessly Devoted To You" by Olivia Newton John from Grease. Joe Buck meant well but he was so Stupid. I think that's what made him so appealing.
@SHiTJuFro743 Back then, X didn't necessarily mean porn. It just meant DON'T bring your kids to watch it. Unlike R where kids MUST be with their parents or someone over 18.
one of the greatest films ive seen,i think some of the comments about it being overated are wrong,if anything it hasnt aged well to todays films, but the story is immense of 2 people finding each other in life.
This movie sucks and is very overrated, even if you take era into consideration. A 2 hour snooze fest. I'm so bored with it as I'm watching it now that I had to come online and comment here about it.
Yeah like I totally didn't see that type of reply coming from you.... A lesser person than me would have told you The Godfather or Lawrence of Arabia just to avoid that type of reply. There's a difference between "favorite" and "well made" movies. This movie here is neither of which to me.
@theguy00000000000000 Really, there's nothing scaring in MIdnight Cowboy. Maybe some buttshots, and sex scenes where you don't really see anything. It's Mickey Mouse compared to A Clockwork Orange.
In my opinion the greatest film ever made for various reasons: great cast, great score, great story, great acting, great tragedy, great comedy, great directing, great period piece. Thumbs up if you agree.
This was the time when big bosses in Hollywood decided to invest in young filmmakers and directors' artistic freedom was something else compared to the Hollywood that came in place after that short period. Imagine how many great American movies haven't been made because film isn't an art form but a business. There are now only huge Hollywood productions and tiny Indie films. Midnight Cowboy couldn't have been made without money, neither without the artistic freedom.
@mbilalbhatti A man goes to New York to become a jiggalo, Things dont work out, nobody wants to sleep with him, he gets mixed up with Ratso and things turn bad! Its one of the greatest movies ever, watch it!
"Everybodys talking at me, i dont understand a word they saying, only the echoes of my mind" haha this film is a master piece! For those who have yet to see this film, WATCH IT, Hoffman and joe Buck what a team loll
thebizkit69u: of course it's outdated - it's from the 60's! But that's what makes it great - a snapshot of the era. I agree the relationship between the two is beautiful, and I defy anyone not to cry at the end of this movie: it's all in Jon Voight's eyes at the end as he sits with the dead Hoffman beside him......
I know many people don't feel the same but I honestly think the movie is extremely outdated and I had trouble enjoying the film as a whole. That being said the performances by Hoffman and Voight are classic, the relationship between the two in the movie is what really made an impact but the rest of the movie is just lost on me, I guess one would have to have lived during the late 60's to really connect but the movie was just a jumbled incoherent mess IMO.
@ReechReynolds well actually it used to be pretty simple. R for showing tits and X if two people screwed. and XXX just meant porn. They decided to get rid of X after pressure from theater owners saying it was killing sales. The public agreed mild sex is no biggie and wala.. the new standardized cinema ratings were born

@Sind3r3lla175 There was a very brief time in the MPAA when they created an X rating for movies not for children. However, it was never copyrighted so within a few years the porn industry came about and used X and XXX for all their films. Thus, the MPAA dropped it completely and later it was replaced with NC-17. (No Children under 17)
