It's hard to imagine today, the truly epochal nature of this event. One of the most die-hard Stalinist states in the world, one of the most oppressive; admitting that it's system of govt. and plan for society was essentially bankrupt. They were throwing in the towel.

In some ways, it could be said that November 9, 1989 finally marked the real end of World War II in Europe.

@bloximonkey Shortly before the wall was built no one expected that. The Eastern German authorities litterally said "No one intends to build a wall". Could you imagine your country, or even your city being separated by a wall? For 25 years? If you wanted to leave the country to maybe attend a wedding or whatever in your Wester German family, you were only allowed to do so, if you had someone, say a child or so, to leave behind to ensure you come back.

that is history. you know - 2 different ideological systems in one city after we tried to rule the world and failed miserably. the population of gdr "voting by feet" and leaving east germany being the visual expression of the disapproval of the people. building a wall to stop people from leaving was the counter action.

world policy at its best - concentrated on one city.
