  • Twinkle Little Star is not bluegrass. it is old time music. I was luck enough to have Mr. Lunsford ask me to play at the festival there which he had started in the 1930's. In the first years, he took a horse and wagon and brought people in from around Buncomb County, NC to play for the "city folks" in Asheville. 20th century. This is old timey music at home which is always the best kind. Nice to see this video and Mr. Lunsford at an earlier age than when I met him.

  • I love this.....what an incredible moment in time...

  • love it real Americana. Thanks

  • I play this tune, albeit not this well. I learned it from an old guy who didn't know the title. Someone once called it "Moccasin Two Step" but I don't think so. What is it's title?

  • Oye apá que bueno que está.

  • This is not technically "bluegrass". In Appalachia we call this "old time music".

  • yep

  • Love it GREAT made my day to see the video. Wish I was there

  • You idiots go listen to something else if you don't like this music. And its "Monroe".

  • The movie "Deliverance"!

  • Eat your hart out Bill Monrow !

  • Absolutely beautiful, this music is the best of the best. Love it

  • Was this Documentary shot during the making of the film Deliverance by any chance?

  • Eso si es musica Americana!! Great playing real American Music!! -TX

  • @dedrickpatsmart You got a lotta nerve, fella. Be glad I ain't standing next to ya.

  • Now that's some good old-time pickin' and fiddlin'. Prettiest music I ever heard!

  • "play something slow to start us off" I love this stuff, thanks for posting!!!Cant get enough!!!!

  • @kmill61 I am so glad that you heard those words. Every word at the opening and closing of this sequence and throughout the film that is part of I carefully selected. I loved the way they spoke. I cherish the words as much as I do the music. As a result, recently, America's Library of Congress bought the rights to this film not only because of its music history, but because of the spoken music of the language of these beautiful people.

  • Now, I'm talking about Best Bluegrass Clog Dancing Video Ever Made , not this one that I've left the comment on. I hope that isn't confusing. I did so because I noticed this one isn't a rental. With the other video, the rental, you can watch a 2 minute preview, but not the whole 6 minutes. And you have to upgrade your YouTube account in order to rent the 6 minutes. Prob the best way for you to see it is to logout of your YouTube acct, then visit the page.

  • Great video. Hey: How come your Best Bluegrass Clog Dancing Video Ever Made is now suddenly rental only? That's a little off-putting. $10 for 6 minutes for something that is a teaser for another, full length video that sells for $30? Sheesh. Way to go from tens of thousands of views to zero.

  • @ahmcclb Help me to understand because I may be confused. Isn't it true that you can see the video on YouTube for no cost but if you want to download it you pay. I have no intention of stopping people from seeing the video on YouTube whenever they choose.

  • awsome fiddle playing, dont get no better than that, now thats the way its done, awsome!!!!!

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gotta' love that lady back there playin' the ol' six string. I bet she's got a mouth full of chew and a jar of moonshine under that chair!!!!

  • This is old time fiddlin' - not bluegrass! Check out the early Bill Monroe videos for real bluegrass!

  • I remember seeing this on PBS. The music just touched me. The dancing?

Oh my, talk about feeling good from watching. To see the (at the time) kds w/big smies, w/a joy inside as they dance. Words can't describe it. Wish more videos were like this :)

  • Thank you CadillacL. What a moment it was. I feel lucky to have been there and lucky to have had my camera and sound gear. We just floated through time, old Bascom Lunsford and two very young film guys who loved the music and just rolled along with it. It is still a joy for me to see this as well - and I am glad so many others have the chance to tsee it because of the greatness of YouTube.

  • Well, it was very well done. Hast there been other films like this?

  • @CadillacL Wish modern culture was like this. This is what the 21st century needs. I also feel good after watching this, but also sad that we've lost genuine culture... A way of really connecting with people. For all of the internet's "connecting people" it could never affect lives and communities like this. Our loss, really.

  • Are those his allied Kentuckians?

  • I believe that's Lost John on fiddle. Possibly George Peagram on banjo?

  • You are right on the fiddler. You are the fhe first person to know him. How do you? The banjo player is Ray Lunsford, no relationship to Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Have you seen my entire film? There is more of Lost John, one of my favorite fiddlers of all time.

  • That was Great!!!

Loved the players and the song!

  • 5 stars given...but...6 stars deserved :)because your contribution goes over and above the average YouTube video. This is such precious footage and a rare glimpse for many. I've added many of your film titles to my wishlist. Thank you for making them available for purchase on your official site.

  • Mr. Hoffman, your film clips are incredible. What amazing, precious footage you've captured. Thank you for presenting this to the rest of us - what a beautiful day filled with beautiful sounds. It must have been quite an experience for you!

  • Thank you zenzeppelin. Your comment means a lot to me. I put these clips up uncertain of the result. I make a living from selling my movies and it seems as though this might be giving them away. But the satisfaction I am getting from touching the hearts and minds of people who see these on YouTube has been unexpected and wonderful surprise. Giving me five stars would help raise me up on the YouTube system. Thank you.

  • Great music! Great video! THANKS!

  • Thanks David! I first saw Bascom and the lady in the picture in 1968. If you would like to find Lost John information, try the Folk Heritage Committee in Asheville. Talk to Jerry Sutton, or members of the Stony Creek Boys from Stony Knob near Asheville. Also, perhaps Bascom's grandson may know. These people can be located through the Asheville Visitors Center. Been to the MD&Folk Festival since the late sixties and have a picture with BL Lundsford.

  • Wow. Someone who grew up in Buncombe and Madison counties. I loved those places then and I'm sure I would now. They were centers of music and dance and creativity and almost every family had a porch with a family member musician who could sit on it and play and sing. What a talent pool. You are one lucky fellow.

  • Oh man, this Movie is awesome, Iv been living and making music in Buncombe and Madison counties for a couple years and this is an awesome Perspective of the area before i was born. it seems that some of those back roads remain unchanged. If you live in or a love this area, GET THE MOVIE.

    thanks David Hoffman!!!

  • unfortunately I do know know what happened to Lost John after I filmed him so many years ago. Good luck in hyour search.

  • I am trying to find information on Lost john. I live in wilkes county, nc. and have heard of him all my life. I have talked to a lot of people and am getting conflicting info on his real name. Any info I can get will be helpful.

  • The fiddler is Jesse, Lost John, Ray and the banjo player is Ray Lunsford. Bascom Lunsford and his wife Frieda are in the background.

  • jm, thanks for identifying Frieda. I knew I had seen her many times, but had forgotten she was Bascom's wife. There were so many talented female muscians back then and there still are.

  • Thankyou to several of the above commentators. I THOUGHT that was ole LOST JOHN I saw there in this clip !! I've got him on a 1963 vinyl LP of an Old-Time Fiddlers Convention from Union Grove, North Carolina !! George Peagram, another of my greatest favourites, is on that LP too; he is SOME 5 string banjer player, I'll tell you !! But This Clip is fantastic. I finally got to SEE Lost John, and not just LISTEN to him. Thankyou so much for supplying this clip !!

  • I would love any further information on lost John as I am trying to put together a new CD from my old recordings of him. Can you help?

  • All these people favor in the face. I wonder if they are all cousins. That is often how it is that people can play together so well.

  • Lost John was an amazing fiddler and individual. He was the REAL DEAL!

  • Thank you for your comment. I loved lost John's fiddle playing. He IS the real deal. And what a story surrounds how he learned the fiddle. He lived a mile off the road back behind a river. An amazing day, recording him.

  • I just ordered Bluegrass Roots from amazon... did not remember the name of the film and cannot thank you enough for posting this video! As soon as the vid began, I remembered seeing the clip in a film many years ago... always did wonder what that film was called! This, my friend, is the TRUE POWER of YouTube! ... that I could come here 20+ years after seeing the film, download your video and then go purchase the film!!! Peace, love and light always to you! Suze

  • Thanks you Suze. I sure love this clip also and am very proud of the film. Thank you for the comment. It made my day.

  • Great stuff and all I can say about a 49 lb. hand held camera is wow. I'll bet his arms ached at the end of the day.

  • Thank you. Lost John the fiddling man was a down and rough fiddler and to me, what makes mountain bluegrass fiddling just magnificent.
