Know what? I like the Coleman Hawkins version a little better than this one. Coleman digs a little deeper than Trane and has a more sympathetic feeling for something at the very core of the song.Hawkins plays some strikingly beautiful passages, especially towards the end of his solo and at the very end of the song. I don't mean to say that Hawkins is 1 and Coltrane is 2, rather Hawkins is 1 and Coltrane is 1A. At least so it seems to me. [I know, who cares?]
OMG what a masterpiece !!!! It's not what they play but what they don't play that is so enticing and marvellous. The two musicians play together like fitting gloves to a hand. I've never understood these two giant names of jazz until now....they play like a beautiful evening breeze

@apshaki1 She was his first real love, and though he tried to impress her, she was kind of out of his league. Their relationship didn't last very long. He wrote this after losing his first love.
I love both these guys, but geez.... well, I didn't like this! Coltrane was a genius, Monk was a genius, but they're not on the same page here... this is the most beautiful jazz song I know. I love the way Monk lurches, careens, stumbles his way through this song, and, well, Coltrane is just too smooth... well, that's my opinion.
Me and you, samadjhi. Came up on the Lower East Side: the 5 Spot, Slug's, the Vangard (when we had some buck, or a way in); the Dom, on St. Mark's Place, where everyone--Jaki Bayard, Shepp, Joe Henderson, Pharoah, Alvin, everybody would jam after hours, sometimes until 4 (You don't have to go home, but you got to get the hell outta here! was the closing blow). Ron Carter, McCoy and my brother Eddie Marshall used to practice at a joint--an apartment--on 1st between "C" and "D." Ah, the life.
@jamesdiggs I've heard and seen documentaries about the 5 spot, and boy was i born in the wrong era. You must of had a BALL. Im a Chicagoin, and i cant find any clubs resembling the "mentioned". Im an up and coming sax player, maybe I'll change that.
I am a certified Jazz man I can go all the way back and I mean back to the cotton fields. I have been in the serious clubs.Where they take their jazz with no chaser. Newark you had Sparky J's across the street the key club. The Gate the Vanguard. The Bottom line. L'C's. I am familiar with King Oliver, the West End Blues. I have seen the Count, Dizzy, Sarah Vaugn, Dexter. I was there when Dexter came back from Europe. In 75 or 76 on and on.What is my point? This tune is at the top of my list...
Thank You Mr.Monk and Mr.Coltrane. You wear your hearts on your sleeve with this heartfelt composition of a woman. One of my favorite Jazz Ballads I have ever heard.Great song to reflect, brood, dream of whoever captured your heart once.
Any one else want to sit back have a nice drink and listen to this song all night long? if not then you are not listening to it correctly. This song is one of the best most soothing most pleasing to the ear songs out there. A real must if you are looking to relax.
Hace tiempo, pensé que round midnight era la obra maestra de thelonious; pero era increible cuando empecé a descubrir los temas de Monk, unos tras otros. Casi todos te enganchan, por su belleza y simplicidad. Era un "simple" genio.
