  • Know what? I like the Coleman Hawkins version a little better than this one. Coleman digs a little deeper than Trane and has a more sympathetic feeling for something at the very core of the song.Hawkins plays some strikingly beautiful passages, especially towards the end of his solo and at the very end of the song. I don't mean to say that Hawkins is 1 and Coltrane is 2, rather Hawkins is 1 and Coltrane is 1A. At least so it seems to me. [I know, who cares?]

  • sensual

  • one of the most underrated ballads in the book of "standards"

it's a haunting melody... the first phrase says it all with Ruby, My Dear

  • che stupendità!!!...

  • which album is this off of?

  • @iadukoh - Naima is the first thing that came to mind when I listened to this the two are very similar.

  • Come to think of it, this must have strongly influenced John's tune Naima.

  • Top of my list. I cry like a baby when I hear this.............. He trusted that Trane could

add to this statement and who could tell a story like Trane particulalry one that that involved nastalgia

  • OMG what a masterpiece !!!! It's not what they play but what they don't play that is so enticing and marvellous. The two musicians play together like fitting gloves to a hand. I've never understood these two giant names of jazz until now....they play like a beautiful evening breeze

  • how do 3 people not like this? how is there even one person in the world that doesn't appreciate this?

  • Didn't he compose this while still in high school? I wonder what was it about this Ruby - she must have been really something, huh?

  • @apshaki1 She was his first real love, and though he tried to impress her, she was kind of out of his league. Their relationship didn't last very long. He wrote this after losing his first love.

  • I love both these guys, but geez.... well, I didn't like this! Coltrane was a genius, Monk was a genius, but they're not on the same page here... this is the most beautiful jazz song I know. I love the way Monk lurches, careens, stumbles his way through this song, and, well, Coltrane is just too smooth... well, that's my opinion.

  • This song and"Monk's Mood" are my favorites. A PERFECT COMBINATION..

  • My favorite!

  • song by silvio berlusconi

  • why are 2 dont like?

  • this is deep

  • Me and you, samadjhi. Came up on the Lower East Side: the 5 Spot, Slug's, the Vangard (when we had some buck, or a way in); the Dom, on St. Mark's Place, where everyone--Jaki Bayard, Shepp, Joe Henderson, Pharoah, Alvin, everybody would jam after hours, sometimes until 4 (You don't have to go home, but you got to get the hell outta here! was the closing blow). Ron Carter, McCoy and my brother Eddie Marshall used to practice at a joint--an apartment--on 1st between "C" and "D." Ah, the life.

  • @jamesdiggs I've heard and seen documentaries about the 5 spot, and boy was i born in the wrong era. You must of had a BALL. Im a Chicagoin, and i cant find any clubs resembling the "mentioned". Im an up and coming sax player, maybe I'll change that.

  • great

  • One of Monk's first compositions, and one of his best.

  • Two giants speaking fluently in intergalactic lingo.

  • I am a certified Jazz man I can go all the way back and I mean back to the cotton fields. I have been in the serious clubs.Where they take their jazz with no chaser. Newark you had Sparky J's across the street the key club. The Gate the Vanguard. The Bottom line. L'C's. I am familiar with King Oliver, the West End Blues. I have seen the Count, Dizzy, Sarah Vaugn, Dexter. I was there when Dexter came back from Europe. In 75 or 76 on and on.What is my point? This tune is at the top of my list...

  • @samadjhi

Oh yes! It is one of the rare ones left for us to listen to..(Shadow) Wilson,ds left us soon after this recording and others.

  • oh thelonious, my dear

  • Thank You Mr.Monk and Mr.Coltrane. You wear your hearts on your sleeve with this heartfelt composition of a woman. One of my favorite Jazz Ballads I have ever heard.Great song to reflect, brood, dream of whoever captured your heart once.

  • one of the greatest arrangements ever !!!

  • It;s weird that such history is for eternity recorded with such an awfully out of tune piano....

  • MY FAVORITE STANDART... IS WONDERFULLL...

  • Gorgeous - though I must admit I still prefer the Monk solo version.

  • What about Coltrane's play. Absolutely magnificent!!!! Monk was great too!!!!!

  • simply brilliant! I love song

  • thanks KlaverPlaya, it has always intrigued me, such a poignant melody.

  • anyone know who Ruby was ?

  • Although I don't remember the last name, Ruby im pretty sure was the name of his high school girlfriend. This piece was dedicated to her.

  • I hate the word "genius", but Monk's absolute Genius is in full evidence here. I mean, this as perfect as it gets.

  • genio! y genial!

  • Ain't this music weird?

  • Simply brilliant...)))Rocco

  • Beautiful

  • amazing!

  • Any one else want to sit back have a nice drink and listen to this song all night long? if not then you are not listening to it correctly. This song is one of the best most soothing most pleasing to the ear songs out there. A real must if you are looking to relax.

  • african americans in the 40s created the most beautiful songs in the world!!! i just love monk's style!

  • @InkaPeru i agree! it was all they were suffering that brought this exquisite beauty to life.

  • I'm tempted to call this my favorite song. I wish everyone could hear what I hear.

  • can't be compared.

  • I love Coltrane and Monk

  • Hace tiempo, pensé que round midnight era la obra maestra de thelonious; pero era increible cuando empecé a descubrir los temas de Monk, unos tras otros. Casi todos te enganchan, por su belleza y simplicidad. Era un "simple" genio.

  • Slow dance anyone?

  • check out the melodious thunk remix of this song! out now!

  • Grazie per aver pubblicato questo pezzo bellissimo. Se vuoi ti invio la mia versione eseguita con l'orchestra di Barga Jazz diretta da Bruno Tommaso.

  • Certainly a masterpiece

  • sorry guys, late night...... accidentally clicked the thumbs down . Up Up.....;;

  • great song... one of my favorite jazz pieces.

  • This is my favorite by Monk, so far. I try to imagine what the lyrics to this song would be, by the tones that they plays.

  • Mine too. A Masterpiece

  • @Smileyfacedkiller

Someone already did that . :)

Check out Carmen McRae's album - "Carmen sings Monk"
