  • if i went to the cinema to watch this in 87, i d come out of it depressed as hell.

not to mention i lost the basic plot at part 3...but its ok, it was an experience

  • Thanks so much for sharing! This is very much inspiring. I am afraid of reading the book since all the meaning and beautiful poetry will be lost in translation, but this was certainly inspiring and very beautiful, so thank you so much.

  • This was a very interesting interpretation, but sadly one that only opens to a person that already knows Genji Monogatari well. It is also dissapointing in lacking the original lushness of the novel, going for a rather minimalistic presentation. It excells in the examination of character psychology that the original had, allthough in a much more modern way.

    Thank you for uploading this!

  • thank you for uploading

  • Was Hikaru-dono ever happy? Well and truly happy?

  • this film was made 2 years before emperor showa died.

  • Yup didn't get that at all but I still enjoyed it! it makes me wanna read this book everyone's been talking about below...

  • @wildwildwest1 yes me too, I have once bumped on this book in our school library before, I decided to borrow it but ended on not reading it...I wish I have read it...

  • i don't know why...but genji remembers me a lot of kanda yuu. from D-Gray man *-*

    and btw...this film is wonderful!

  • i really did not get it. Can somebody tell me what the story is about?

  • @saraparvez

A story about a handsome man and his lovers.

This tale was written abound 1000 A.D. and is said to be the first novel (or the first psychological novel) in human history.

  • A lot of you do not understand how things worked in the Heian Period. This was normal behavior. Ploligamy was the norm, and Genjis prolific love live was to show him as the ultimate lover. Its not like he "hit it and quit it". He kept almost all of his lovers at his estate, and cared for them. He was in no way a slut. In fact, in the story, he was looked upon as a great lover, both by the men and the women. Don't comment on things you don't undesirable.

  • Orihimechick. what you read was so beautiful. i think i understand genji's pain. it's so sad. no wonder his sleeps around. he is completely empty inside.very hollow i supposed, right?

  • wow... i felt so wounded, this boy Gengi was a slut, an himself took all bad things that happened, if he only were been faithful to his wife he should be so happy.........all men are the same

  • ha i couldnt agree more with you. i absolutely love the book, but at the same time, beyond all the beautiful poetry in it, at the end of the day, genji the hero was just a whoring man who was talented but egotistical...

  • I may not understand your comment, but if I do, allow me to point a few things out.

This story took place 1,000 years ago, in Heian Japan. Genji was most certainly not a "slut" according to that era's societal norms, and was actually very well-mannered. While there are some instances of Karmic Repercussions in the story, they are not completely due to disloyalty to his wife. Genji's marriage to his wife was arranged--He still had many affairs before and after....as did everyone.

  • @Glyre777 Unfortunatly The Genji cannot be presented in 2 or 3 hour show. It is a envolving story and many themes are meshed into the overall story. A story of this magnitude for it to be done right I would say 40 hours mini series and that may not be all that it requires. This is one of the great books of the world & its wonder shouldn't be eclipsed by skimping on story themes.

  • Ok the cherry blossom dance that genji does at the end is the same dance as in the beginning. In japanese culture the cherry blossom dance is a way of showing respect for the blossoms. THe blossoms symbolise prosperity and hope. So genji thinks that the cherry blossoms took his mother because without her he was lost, comfused, and alone. So knowing that he will be exiled he dances for the cherry blossoms as a way of settling things. He hopes that the blossoms wil bring him luck in the futur

  • That was beautiful!!!! Thanks for posting

  • Beautiful story. Lots of meaning and emotions and Japanese culture and history. Thank you.

  • Perhaps he was trying to save Murasaki's life, but I think he just knew it was time to stop running in fear from the sakura tree. When you fear a curse, you give it power.

  • Dear Motoss, please posted more video of genji. I hope this episodes is not the end. thank you

  • I'm sorry if I've offended people here but, I don't get the movie? I mean I TOTALLY LOVED IT and ALL but sometimes it leaves me clueless? Genji is lonely i see that but what's with the Sakura Kimono? Especially the ending? I Would be very happy if someone can tell me. And thanks for uploading this video :)

  • I've read the book, and if you haven't it well it's totally understandable that the Sakura Kimono doesn't make sense, as well as the ending. Just like ciastkowykiller, just bellow, said Genji sees cherry blossoms every time someone is about to leave him. So in part ten when the blossom fell once more, I take that he went off to 'face' the blossoms, so he could move on and be with Murasaki. That's the way I took this ending, I could be wrong though... thanks for uploading Motoss :D

  • You know you might be right! because Genji did mention that the sakura tree took his mother?! Anyways, I loved the movie a lot but when there is a ending like this one makes me go off the cliff wondering what just happen? I just want an happy ending that's all lol...

Maybe I should start reading the book too! Thanks mychoco89 :)

  • Oh no problem! But if you do read The Tale of Genji get the Seidensticker translation copy, I have it and it's really good. :)

  • Genji of the 1987's version is more handsome and appealing than the new one in 2009's version

  • Thank you. The music was from Hosono-san. One of the YMO`s member, and I really enjoyed the music with silence.

  • ^^ thanks for sharing... this video is out of print, isn't it? Can't seem to find it on sale anywhere.

  • Yes, the video hasn't been reprinted since when it was released in the eighties. I have only seen a battered VHS of this that was just about to die. A reprint on DVD would be great for this movie.

  • @Motoss a slight criticism the story kinda drags it doesn't seem to have any form of action or comic relief for anime

  • @malevolenceXXXensues Consider that this movie was made in the early 1980s (before anime was popularized in the west and even before it was so successful in Japan), and that it is based on a culturally significant, 1000 year old story.

  • @Motoss '87's not that early. and I'm pretty sure people were starting to embrace voltron, and the stuff made by tatsunoko at that time.

  • @malevolenceXXXensues If you want to see something more modern, try the newest anime based on the Genji, Genji Monogatari Sennenki. It's an 11 episode anime series from 2009 that you may like better (also it has more content obviously).

  • that was one of the most beautyful ending I have ever seen, GO SAKURA KIMONO! gotta love it!

  • I watched all parts,thank you very much>>Motoss

  • Migoto deshita! Arrigatou gozaimashita!

  • thanks 4 sharing this. i really apreciate your contribution

  • this is very difficult addaptation in all japanese history!

  • thanks for all uploaded videos!!!!!!!! do u have something like this more???

  • It would be nice adding the 90% of the story that has been left out. A person watching this and not knowing anything about the Genji would still know nothing. It is a fate the Genji should not suffer.

  • Agreed. If i hadn't read the actual story I would be absolutely lost as to what the significance of all these random women was.

  • the only things I was able to understand are:

    1. Genji loves pretty women.

    2. Genji is the crown prince's father.

    3. Genji is sakuraphobic.

  • First whoever wrote up dialogue for Lady Rokujo knew what women were about. I love beautiful women. I cannot understand why court women put up with being raped once in a while but considering the court ran by men... It would be better to stay than the highway. Japanese love good horror/ghost stories. Ugetsu is a good ghost story-movie.

  • He suffers from loneliness - every woman that he loved leave him: his mother, wife, Lady Rokujo, Lady Fujitsubo and also another people. That's why he's freak xP

  • @ciastkowykiller He doesn't love Lady Rokujo.

  • @nor888vast695 thats the thing with movies made from books.. they can only put in so much into a time frame.. thats why if you read a book and see a movie based off it, it is slighty different or alot was changed or cut out to where it still told most the story just in a shorter time slot. Sucks but that's how it goes. "shrug"

  • @DarkOnyx98 Of course your points are correct but the tale of Genji is a work that will be patronized the most by people with a somewhat literary background. My personal feeling is that the Genji cannot be covered in 2-3 hours in film or animation. Practically no one in the West has ever heard of this book; it was written in Japan in @1000 yrs. So even for Japanese it is an ancient work. I read that Genji had 4 characters that are no longer used. I correspond to a Japanese lady on text problems
