I posted this on another vid, but the take off was wrong, FYI. In the USCG the helo's hover, then pedal turn left and move off that direction. The wind is placed 15 degrees at 15kts on the port bow. This is in case of an tail rotor failure, the helo would be spinning left on it's own, and the ships go to starboard to avoid crash on deck. Seen it many times while I was tie down crew on the CGC Reliance in Portsmouth, NH.
ive been simming for 12 years and i still cant land a helicopter on a moving ship like you just did, amazing job dude, and btw what hardware u using? (yokes. pedals, etc.)
This is the Aerosoft Jayhawk, as apart of the Seahawk and Jayhawk Package. This was recorded using a registered version of Fraps, although you can get it free from the Fraps website. Google Fraps, and you'll see it.
You're an awesome pilot man, how old are you? I'm 17, and planning on getting my commercial helicopter license, and working in the bush in Northern British Columbia. By the looks of your videos, you'd like to be coastguard pilot? You'd be great at it, that's for sure. I've been practicing with the dodosim 206 FSX for about a year and a half now, but I'm not near as good as you! Good luck with your training, whatever that might be!!
Thank you for the comment Northern. I'm 17 also, and am going through the US Coast Guard, hopefully to eventually be chosen for flight training. I admire your location, I love flying bush. I'm actually just an hour away from BC, down in Washington state.
Keep on practicing, they are a lot of fun to fly. If you ever need help with anything, feel free to PM me, and we can talk it out!
I wish you the best for your future training, too.
That's awesome, I was thinking of going through the armed forces for flight training as well, since for the most part it's free, and since I also have US and Canadian citizenship, but I decided on civilian-private flight training. I'll be going to College next month for AME training, then hopefully after I finish my apprenticeship, I'll begin flight training. Good luck, and who knows, maybe we'll cross paths someday!
You will make it, stick to it and keep trying man. I'm planning and trying to become a fighter pilot, it's a long shot, but i want it more than anything. Good luck becoming a helicopter pilot mate, you'll get in easily.
Good luck to you too man. Just stay on top of your game, excel in school, get in top physical shape, make good choices, and you'll have a great chance at becoming a fighter pilot.
Take care, and I hope you get what you are after!
Do you have permission to access it? Try right clicking on the .exe for shipyard, then click 'Run as Administrator', or something along those lines and see if that works.
At least the ship is moving strait and at a consistent speed, that one helicopter mission was a pain in the ass because that yacht was moving so erratically
I know exactly what you are talking about. That mission is terrible. The ships that are generated using the AI Ship Tool all sail nice and smooth, at a constant speed. It makes all the difference.
Superb demonstration Garth! I just watched the HDMS Absalon episode of Mighty Ships on the Discovery Channel today and the landing you made here truly looks like what they exercised on the war ship... They took off and landed on a moving vessel, quite a sight, really.
Thanks Erik! This stuff is amazingly fun, and challenging. I'm gonna try to see if I can find a ship with lights on it, so I can upload some stormy night flying videos. This current ship is as dark as the night itself after the sun drops.
never tried landing on a moving ship, i gotta question: since you're not exactly hovering because the landing site is moving forward, the helo is under the translational lift effect, so is more stable. my question is: even if matching the speed of the boat is difficult, isn't the landing easier because of the forward movement?
Yeah, the helicopter will be more stable, since you have about 20+ knots of forward airspeed when you touchdown. You can look at it like a running landing, you don't have to deal with the low speed instability of the helicopter, since you have forward movement.
That being said, it can still be really tricky to line up with the ship. Throw low visibility and cross winds into the equation, and you can have one scary landing!
@schllimann it depends on how you look at it. for one, you can land a bit faster than normal (15-30knts faster), but if you stuff up then youll most likely end up in the water, & you hav to match the ships speed to an accuracy of about 3knts (for me anyway). also depends on the ship. its easiest to land on a carrier than a destroyer/cutter.
I'm not to sure, actually. That would be an interesting way to approach it though. I'll look into it. If you check out a video in my favorites titled "MH-60S Lands on Destroyer", the pilot flies straight in.
This is something I'll have to look into though. Maybe it depends on the ship, obstacles around the landing zone, or the weather. I'll see if some of the pilots at Hovercontrol know the answer!
Mike, apparently, the approach you described is common in the Royal Navy. They approach to the left of the pad, then slowly drift over until in position. It is a safety measure. I'll PM you the link to the Hovercontrol forum post about it, if you'd like.
Thanks man. What's challenging is matching the ships speed. When I get somewhat close tot he ship, I slow down and match it's speed, so I know what speed to hit when I'm actually touching down.
And of course, I have to instantly hit the parking brake to avoid rolling back. The HH-60J does a great job on this, considering it's so big.
excellent flighting!! :)

wait how did u get that carrier or ship and graet landing and is that a freeware aricraft
yazan6560 2 years ago
No, it's payware from Aerosoft.
DayJetFan 2 years ago
but you can also get it at BestBuy like I did. If your store has it in stock. I believe mine was like 29 bucks. Not a bad deal.
DayJetFan 2 years ago
And once its installed theres a tool called Shipyard that allows you to place ships to land on.
DayJetFan 2 years ago
Yep, using Google Earth
TheyTookMyWoody 2 years ago
Got a question. I can't figure this out. I'm using Windows 7, should I run it in XP compatibility or something because Shipyard won't work.
DayJetFan 2 years ago
I'm also running Windows 7, with no problems.

Isn't it normally standard to fly alongside the landing pad for a few seconds and then approach from the side?
