By the way...fendergibs, I love Missing Persons, and had this cassette thru high school. I just happen to like Rush AND Missing Persons, too. No need to get uptight...it's all good stuff. Peace.
@bigskyrockies yeah me too but I got and still have the vinyl MP & rush records, sound better even than the cd versions. MP was just never app, while back in the early 80s rush was huge. Every dope knew who neil peart was but only real musicains knew who T.Bozzio was. Even Neil was quoted in drummer mag how he felt guys like Bozzio were superior but less known. MP changed syles on every record & could never get a following going after spring session M.
One of the only bands to put the drum kit at the front of the stage. This is why. But the bass playing that Pat O'Hearn is doing is pretty cool, too. Understandably, a lot of attention was paid to Dale, but the whole band was great. Of all of the "new wave", these guys were the most talented.
Patrick O'Hearn sure got really mellow just a few years after this.
And Terry? Well, he did tone it down a bit too as he worked on mastering his already masterful playing. Not anywhere near as chill as Patrick, though.
I can watch this a hundred times and still smile with fascination! I saw him around 84' at Six Flags with Missing Persons and they were so good live. Also saw him with Jeff Beck in 90',he was amazing soloing I think on the song Blue Wind. Also, Stevie Ray Vaughn was on that same bill, F-ing great guitarist dude.Love Beck, but was very happy to S.R.V. for my first time, he was so good.
I was listening to this thinking, "Terry is doing the same thing with the double bass and the China cymbals that that dude did on the Steve Vai album" (Sex and Religion) and then I realized, That was also Terry Bozzio....
@yourhero36 Dude, I could not agree more. The bass playing is friggin unreal during the solo...great bass riffs, chords, slides...it's just incredible. His name is Patrick O'hearn, he and Bozzio were band mates with Zappa. You cant find much better musicians.

Terry is one of the best drummers I have ever seen or heard play & this is coming from me I am a drummer myself he rocks! Wish I could of seen this band live I wasn't even born yet though :(
Go Terry! I taught myself this groove a few years ago - pretty tough at first but if you break it up and work it out nice and slowly it turns into a pretty sick beat. Hey, got a question...what's up with Terry Bozzio and Vinnie Colaiuta? In all of their past interviews they never credit eachother and i've never heard either say ANYTHING about the other. I think Terry got mighty jealous when he first saw Vinnie...anyone got any clues?
Sick beat is right! Cool call-and-response between the snare and the double-bass, with steady high-hat rhythm throughout. This has been one of my favorite grooves since the first time I heard it.
First time i heard of this tune was when mike portnoy commmented on it in a modern drummer issue - was one of his favorite grooves...it has opened up so many doors for my linear playing and even though it's in 6/4 it still GROOVES! Now i just wannna try and nail "Dong wit da Yuda" from Joe's Garage ( a Vinnie masterpiece)....anything Zappa just makes me smile.....
I think you need to concentrate more on the quarter note - don't try and hear the 8th or 16th....i'm gona guess and say that the quarter note is at about 100bpm. You can find beat ONE on 0:26 (terry hit's snare and left crash together) then just listen to the guitar line - don't listen to his solo, you'll get lost. I promise you this is in 6/4 - i transcribed it. Hope this helps bro.
I wish I could find the article, but Terry did admit to being depressed when Vinnie came in did such an amazing job with Zappa, equaling or surpassing his own work. Very honest and ultimately, a compliment.
I NEED that article!!! It just makes perfect sense dont you think? I've never heard terry talk a bout vinnie, and there's a Steve Vai interview where he talked about being in the control room with terry watching vinnie - and vinnie did something, well "Vinnie", and terry just walked out.
I read that. He said Vinnie read through The Black Page at the audition like it was easy, and he had struggled a little learning it. I'm a huge fan of both.
Apparently Vinnie knew it off by heart. And played it on Terry's kit pretty much flawlessly. But it was vinnie playing a ridiculously hard section in a rehearsal - where he started playing the groupings with one hand while eating a piece of suhsi with the other - then switching hands to adjust his glasses and ultimately completed the bar perfectly. Pretty sick eh?
In 1984 I was a student at North Texas State (a huge music school for TX) and Vinnie did a seminar there and someone from the audience produced sheet music of The Black Page and asked if Vinnie would play it. He agreed and from what I remember Vinnie kind of stumbled through it. Truthfully, I wasn't that familiar with the BP at the time. He did stop and restart once though, which he joked about. I thought he was humble for doing so. Everyone roared with applause at the end.
GET OUT OF HERE! That's so cool! The only reason i was under the impression that he knew it "off by heart" was in an interview he did with Modern Drummer in '82(?). He said that he had listened to it quite alot off the Live in New York album and when he auditioned he said that before Frank gave him the sheet he just started playing it - and got through most of it from what i remember...
Thanks for the really great story - always cool hearing any old tales of Vinnie. The guy is unbelievable.
WHEN NEIL PEART WAS 1ST FEATURED IN MODERN DRUMMER,IN 1980, HE SAID HE Couldn,t UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE THINK HE WAS SO GOOD, He said to check out Terry Bozzio and Simon Phillips he said Now those Guys r really Good.
You make it seem like 6/4 is a tough time signature. Try Danny Carey, in one particular song of Tool (his band) the song goes from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8 to 5/8, then repeats in 1 measure intervals. Each measure a new time signature. Thats syncopation! :P oh, the song is Lateralus.
I finnally saw Danny Carey's technique the other day. Pretty clumsy. He gets the job done but no where near as graceful as say... Vinnie Colaiuta. The guys that study the Moeller technique a whole lot more relaxed behind the kit.
yea he is really clumsy. But he is a good drummer. Then there are good drummers like Mike Portnoy with an ego the size of China, that pisses me off. But check out Todd Sucherman, my personal FAVORITE drummer, i have vids. He actually performs a Moeller technique in my hand tips video, check him out!
oh i know. Hes a syncopation drummer. Terry is a VERY artsy drummer. Hard to understand his style... hell i dont even get it. But every other person thinks hes jesus in his style, just like his followers like Chad Whackerman......
@Kelavmeister i agree with you in general, but syncopation is something else: "a shift of accent in a passage or composition that occurs when a normally weak beat is stressed" *within* the same meter/time signature.
No way, man. Warren Cuccurullo's a fantastic guitar player, especially since he can actually write a great pop tune without forfeiting any of the complexity he's capable of. Patrick O'Hearn, the bassist, has played with some of the jazz greats and is on the money every time. Dale isn't Whitney Houston, but she's a GREAT vocalist and presence. The whole band is unreal.
SOOO SICK!!! Love it!

Now i just wannna try and nail "Dong wit da Yuda" from Joe's Garage ( a Vinnie masterpiece)....anything Zappa just makes me smile.....

nothing is in 6 here NOTHING! 5.. i hear bars of 9 all odd but nothing divisible by 2 at all!
ishredu 4 years ago
I think you need to concentrate more on the quarter note - don't try and hear the 8th or 16th....i'm gona guess and say that the quarter note is at about 100bpm. You can find beat ONE on 0:26 (terry hit's snare and left crash together) then just listen to the guitar line - don't listen to his solo, you'll get lost. I promise you this is in 6/4 - i transcribed it. Hope this helps bro.

I wish I could find the article, but Terry did admit to being depressed when Vinnie came in did such an amazing job with Zappa, equaling or surpassing his own work. Very honest and ultimately, a compliment.
intuantu 4 years ago
I NEED that article!!! It just makes perfect sense dont you think? I've never heard terry talk a bout vinnie, and there's a Steve Vai interview where he talked about being in the control room with terry watching vinnie - and vinnie did something, well "Vinnie", and terry just walked out.
eskimoposh 4 years ago

Terry Bozzio is SOOOO GOOD oh man
macekid421 4 years ago 2
Dana Carey is a great drummer in his own right.
Why are you trying to compare these drummers?
Tool would not sound right with Vinnie on drums.
However, Frank most certainly would have worked with
Carey, provided there wasn't some freaky personal interaction that precluded that event.

Kelavmeister 4 years ago
I finnally saw Danny Carey's technique the other day. Pretty clumsy. He gets the job done but no where near as graceful as say... Vinnie Colaiuta. The guys that study the Moeller technique a whole lot more relaxed behind the kit.
SCOTTBACHMAN 4 years ago
yea he is really clumsy. But he is a good drummer. Then there are good drummers like Mike Portnoy with an ego the size of China, that pisses me off. But check out Todd Sucherman, my personal FAVORITE drummer, i have vids. He actually performs a Moeller technique in my hand tips video, check him out!
Kelavmeister 4 years ago
Portnoy isn't even in the same league as Terry.
sunnfun 4 years ago 2
oh i know. Hes a syncopation drummer. Terry is a VERY artsy drummer. Hard to understand his style... hell i dont even get it. But every other person thinks hes jesus in his style, just like his followers like Chad Whackerman......

+1..........

@Kelavmeister i agree with you in general, but syncopation is something else: "a shift of accent in a passage or composition that occurs when a normally weak beat is stressed" *within* the same meter/time signature.

@Kelavmeister - Yea Tool is great if you're 15 years old.
