In my opinion, Steinbeck's message was much greater than his novels. His understanding of Jung's psychology, friendship with Ed Ricketts, and Joseph Campbell are fascinating studies. The book, The Log From The Sea of Cortez is a great introduction to Steinbeck beyond an entertaining reading experience.
John died on December 20th, 1968. This was the day I got married. Went to Salinas and went to all the places he wrote about. I took classes in the room he was born in. Put flowers on his grave once a month. Had a beer milkshake. Had my pineapple pie with blue cheese and a beer. Went where Mac and the boys got the frogs. Almost got a ticket backing up the hill to the Carmel Valley road like Mac and the boys. This was before Cannery Row was "discovered."
Steinbeck is America's greatest author, hands down. East of Eden is the 'Great American Novel.' If you are a fan and if you ever get a chance drive Highway 101 right through the Salinas Valley. The stories truly come alive when you look at the foothills and the mountains and the fertile valleys.
I came upon this video this morning.. great song. I volunteer at the Steinbeck House and meet fans from around the world who come visit where John grew up and to check out the museum and places mentioned in so many of his books. I recently read East Of Eden. It had so many interesting characters and was quite a page turner. I loved reading about the area which is also my hometown.
The Grapes of Wrath was excellent, but also check out The Moon is Down and Travels with Charlie. The Winter of Our Discontent can get you down, but Cannery Row and Tortilla Flat are funny and sad.
East Of Eden is simply amazing. Like what Ricci12 said, it is hard to understand the whole main plot idea. Summarizing his novels, to me anyway, would be very hard. As confusing as some are, they are without a doubt my favorite. I am almost finished reading East of Eden and even now I have trouble explaining the plot. East of Eden is a definite keeper.
I've heard that The Grapes of Wrath isn't that good. Could anyone tell me if they liked it? Could you also tell me some of your favorite John Steinbeck books?
I have read The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden, I loved both of them but I think the main problem about Steinbeck's novels is that they are a hard read. So many plots and characters that somehow come together in the end. East of Eden was my favorite.
Thanksgiving Day 2007. John is a part of our day, nights in Rocinante, the love of "our" Charlie, our little Chihuahua, and understanding of our fellow Americans. Seems its been lost now. Nobody looks to love and understand, they just want to pass by. Great song, thank you!
Good job. I think John would have liked it.
