If I were Richard Heenes attorney, I would save this video clip, The Sherrif has already aroused reasonable doubt! At around 3:03-3:05 the sherrif states that prior to responding to the balloon call they contacted a scientist who confirmed that the payload for this thing was 80 pounds! The sherrif later states that he contacted the scientist again the following day and he once again confirmed this! There is reasonable cause to believe this boy could have been in this balloon.

It's clear he's eating up the media attention. Going right to his head. I suppose the media could have found him anyway; however, the Sheriff says he wants to talk to Richard Thomas. The sheriff did his job. If there is a boy floating away in a balloon, the don't have much time to ask questions.. While the event was going on, the police didn't know where the boy was, and had reason to believe the boy was in the balloon.

FYI this is an older interview. The sheriff recently admitted he was intentionally misleading the media until more evidence was collected. In his more recent interview he said this was a hoax and that charges will be pressed.

The Sheriff specifically has stated they didn't publicly come down on the family at first because they needed to obtain their trust.

It is a very common tactic, and very effective. With their trust, they were able to obtain a search warrant and seize computers, financial records, etc which pointed to even more evidence of this being a fraud.

Had the police dept. publicly come out right from the get-go and said they suspected fraud, all that evidence would have been destroyed and compromised.

This is possible but the father did say that the boy did not want to say anything out of fear of getting in trouble. The dad could very well be lying of course. The 911 call made by the mother and father is on youtube and they told the operator that it was a flying saucer rather than a balloon... figures..
