  • I've never seen tailor behaving like this ... they are a pelagic fish. It's mid winter, the water is cold at 17 degrees C. Maybe they are breeding ?

It will be interesting to see if they are still there today ... its easy to see them from the cliff above.

Would a pneumatic gun have better range ?

  • aww yeh your demestic taylor is a breed of its own they pretty much do wat they want true that they are pelagic this specimen is unique in its own right they do like to sporn there young in 17 degree waters

and remember good luck and be safe

  • I've actually been wondering if they were salmon (not real salmon ... an Ozzie pelagic fish that looks very similar to a tailor). They were much bigger than tailor I've caught or speared here.

  • there is a defined bread of salmon but as you say they are not real ive had close incounters with these fish and they do have similaraties to domestic salmon

taylor are known to mutate so its not rare to find a school that have.

and remember good luck and be safe

  • Do you mean that tailor can mutate into Australian salmon ?

  • @reef4keen do you seriously think that australian salmon are not a breed of fish and do you honestly believe that taylor mutate into australian salmon or are you just taking the piss?

  • @sydneydoc dude i would rather have a brand powerd gun over a pneumatic anyday .. yes band guns have better accuracy and range.

  • it might just be her acent

  • English is her second language.

Now here's a question for you. I said that Queenscliff has been thin on fish in recent years but for the past 2 days there's been a school of hundreds of huge tailor just outside the break. The water is crystal clear, surf very small.

I tried everything I could think of ... the fish were very slow moving, easy targets, BUT no matter what I tried, they stayed just out of range.

I even tried fishing for them ... but no bites.

  • that is exactly right but that it is a cross bread and yes pneumatic gun does have a better range

  • @reef4keen pneumatic guns only have a small range of sizes .. the biggest " fart gun " you can get is only 1.1m.

i use a 1.3m superfrog edge with a single 18mm rubber and this can shoot up to 5-6m :)

  • sos but the women sounds like a drip

  • She has a bachelors plus 2 masters degrees !

  • At least you got to have a swim! Beats watching TV

  • I did ... at the same spot the day before. Video day there was nothing.

  • Are you joking me mate? Maybe you should have shot a fish!

  • hey guy i generally spear around forster nsw

in the lake there is heaps of oyster leases

we take a small 100 or 90 cm gun for easy movment under and around the leases. ur a great chance of luderick, bream, blackfish, maybe the odd mullet

or a flathead, big flathead love the leases

  • The owners of the leases don't mind ?

  • no because some of the fish attack the oysters

  • Is all of Forster spear fishable?

I'm going up there in a few weeks, I've been wondering, I was going to call up the local tackle shops to find out, But you may be able to tell me? =)

And maybe some good spots ;)

  • mate there is a lake called wallis lake. the back part of the lake is leagal 2 spear this is done best with a boat as it take a very long time to swim after barclays oyster leases it is leagal. also if you go to pebbely beach enter at the oposite side of the rotary walk. maybe a flathead bream.

  • NSW fishery laws state it's illegal to spearfish in enclosed waters.

  • just chill, some laws are ment to be broken because there stupid and make no sence

  • you my friedns dont know the laws ;)

  • luderick is blackfish

  • thought u would bring back an aquarium fish or sumthing? no float or floatline... u must be confident you will get a kill shot on a fish that will drown you if u dont.

  • I was after bream, which easily go in the mesh bag. I sometimes take a float when I'm feeling optimistic but the bag is less hassle.

The only fish I've landed that nearly drowned me was a big king, years back, with a shot that grazed his spine but didn't slow him down in the slightest ... once I worked him into the shallows it was like watersking. It's been a long time since I've seen anything like that though, especially around Queenscliff.

  • yeah i used to put a mess bag on my float when i was looking 4 crays... i would still be dodgy about having fish next to my body" shark factor". there is a wicked spot at kingscliff, nsw. i only realy shore dive...advice...if ur lucky to come home with a feed i'd definatly find another head land even if it means an hour an a half drive.

    take care n dive safe

  • Queenscliff is good for me because its just a couple of minutes walk from home. It used to be quite a good spot. I feel we did have a significant impact on some species because of the amount of diving we used to do. Of course commercial fishing hasn't helped. I'm sure there's good diving further north but these days rock climbing is my major sport.

  • fair enough man.. just trying to help..drop me a comment on ur next dive vid n i'll check it k

    dive safe

  • u can do better than this u in australia meccah of spearfishing .

  • I live quite close by to this spot (it's just 7 miles from the heart of Sydney). 30 years ago used to be very good here ... not quite what I'd call a mecca but usually a good chance of flathead, bream, trevally, John Dory, tailor, kingfish ... these days it is much slimmer pickings though, so if I get a feed I'm happy.

  • I love the naration!
