Dexter killing brian was him proving to himself that he's following Harry's ethics. and that's the only reason he can justify the killing.

Interesting question is... how will he handle it when Deb finds out? Unless she's a killer, Dexter can't kill her under Harry's ethics. And if he hadn't killed brian, then this dilemma would never be possible.
