Anyway, the Jetta TDI isn't some fuel sipping miracle. My GF's 04 Civic is between 32 and 35 mpg with every tank of gas, and that's with all city driving. Plus burning diesel releases MORE CO2 than gasoline per gallon, so even if the Jetta gets about the same mileage as the Civic it still releases more CO2. Then on top of that it's very difficult and expensive to reduce emissions from a diesel engine to the same level as the latest gasoline engines.

the newer diesel tdi from volkswagen is cleaner the have particulate filters and nox filters please stop arguing with me you probably dont even know how a diesel works but they are as clean as gas if not cleaner stop arguing with me
yeah but compare a large diesel engine to a large gasoline engine. compare the power to mileage ratio. and yes diesel burns "dirtier" but its more efficient my dads 5.9 cummins gets 25+ in his 1 ton pick up and my 1 ton 460 ford gets 8. and his could out tug mine all day. but after late 2005 when they started making cleaner diesel the low sulfer shit its WAYY cleaner than before.
Why would it matter if diesel is more efficient if it pumps out more harmful emissions? Something like that Cummins probably doesn't even have any emissions controls at all, or maybe a catalytic converter at the most. Obviously diesel engines are more efficient, this Jetta is just kind of pathetic.

Urea injection, a particulate filter and a catalytic converter are all required to get a diesel as clean as a gasoline engine.

The TDI is certainly not cleaner than gasoline. At best diesel engines are as clean as gasoline engines.
