Rene Kollo as Kaiser "Falke, Falke" Die Frau ohne Schatten

I saw him in 1989 as Siegfried. He blew the whole audience away! Not as "pretty" as Domingo, perhaps, but far more convincing. Kollo was a sublime artist.

Domingo as Kaiser? First of all: he sings Verdi, not Strauss. Second of all: he isn´t able to speak german. Every other recording I own (Thomas, King, Kollo, Hopf, Heppner, etc) is better. I like him very much in the italian music (as far as I listen to this kind of opera) but he should let go Wagner and Strauss

Placido Domingo was the greatest Emperor, but Kollo is great too. I hope I will buy the Sawallisch's version of "Die Frau ohne Schatten"

Strauss is my favorite opera composer, and Die Frau ohne Schatten is my favorite Strauss opera. It's too bad he wrote such tortuously high tessituras for his tenors. James King recorded this with Rysanek, and does a much better job than Kollo.
