@MyJhongBlackBelt haha that depends on who you're fighting. Ancient people have to deal with those who mastered iron arms, legs and stuff, and such a simple punch can easy bypass the block if the block is light and crush the defender's bones.
i had some teachers tell me that i should close my fist during a circular block? how do you guys feel about close fist? Trying to figure out if the point of it was to protect your fingers from catching in clothing and breaking, or does it add power to the block?
Nice lesson, however you SHOULD show it at full speed, show the REAL technique. Coz it looks kinda silly that way. And the most important thing in blocking is doing it in good time, and doing it really fast (without using too much energy; just lil push-like hitting huge asteroid with little rocket to change it's course).
Wow so much negitivity towards a technique. If you have that much negitive feeling towards it then your mind is not in the right place and you need to meditate.
thats where u dont gt the picture. he isnt making a huge circle. he already has his hands up in a defensive position as all fighters should do. his hands are already up. he isnt just picking up when he sees a punch. he is already guarding and meeting the punch with that motion in mind
i dont take shaolin but here is another schooling. he doesnt meet the punch he catches it of at the bottom and in addition to the attacker frontal vector assault, he adds an upwards force. the circle is added in that upward force to allow him to go to the side. so he isnt stopping anything he is misdirecting the assaulters punch. i dont know wat ur calling pathetic but all martial arts use the misdirection concept thru soft deflection. hell even boxers do it.

Listen... it's simple math. A straight punch is going to hit its target well before a circular motion can contact the punching arm. It's travelling a shorter distance. Then there's still the element of response time for the defender. Bottom line: this can't work without a cooperating attacker.
Great, another comment from a non-trained retard. If you're the future of martial arts, we're doomed. Go play your video games and let the adults talk.
Shouldn't you be in bed at this hour? You have school in the morning. With your 3rd grade writing ability, you need all the help you can get. By the way... does your mommy know that you use those grown-up words? Have fun protecting yourself with your circular blocks...
Wow... you just proved my point. You've now shown everyone that reads this that illiteracy is a serious problem in our country. Stay in school. Good bye.
A proper jab will reach the face long before your hand comes up from your waist to block it.

Open hands are faster. Less tightened muscle that way. Try it out and see which one is easier! Thatll give you the best answer violentmarv.

@ViolentMarv I would leave the hands open. this allows you the option of grabbing the wrist. But either way would work!

@ViolentMarv any way would work, just rememder to tighten your foerarm muscles by bringing your fingers back, and "make it cut" as my se-fu says
