  • That smile at the end(':

  • Cool to see footage from Roman Candle/late Heatmiser era.

  • So gorgeous. Words can't describe what this song means to me. <3

  • I'm still wondering how a man with a simple guitar can perform the most beautiful songs ever...Elliott did it like no others.

  • Ohh that smile just makes me smile, haha! :))))

  • @breeeegs *new* ... I know what I was saying anyway. Missed but still loved :)

  • @breeeegs I was referring to the fact that we are no longer able to hear his beautiful music. Yes, taken from us far too soon. :)

  • Really wonderful song...Somehow hearing his songs without the vocal and instrumental layers that the studio versions have is even better than the recorded stuff. And the smile was great :)

  • Beautiful. LOVE the smile at the end. Tragic waste of talent. Missed :(

  • His talent wasn't wasted. Just taken from us too soon

  • in love. in love.

  • Look at him @ 3:00 He realizes how well the take went and tries to hold back a smile.

  • that smile is absolutely priceless.

well done elliott, well done my friend.

  • have to agree with these "best thing to happen to me" comments. absolutely changed my life. changing my life still, actually.

  • Elliott influenced my music..

If you wanna hear facebook search: "Mitar" (look for the blue image)

    ~thanks, and thank you Elliott

  • I have to favourite this video just because of his amazing smile at the end.

  • anybody know what kind of pickup elliotts using?

  • @taoinmusic It's a Lawrence A-300. I have one and it sounds exactly like all the live recordings as well as the guitar on Memory Lane, Let's Get Lost, and some other recordings. Nice pickup, and it's pretty cheap too.

  • @meegs325 much thanks friend

  • @taoinmusic fisherman earth, its rare, probably discontinued it.

  • I for one, subscribe to the "best ever" to happen to me, concept.

  • This is Goat Head Cheese affirming that the best thing in this life for plxplxkthx could quite reasonably be this song, as it could for a hundred million jerks and non jerks alike-its all relative.

  • @88douchebag That's fucked.

  • the ending makes me happy.

  • does anyone know the chords at the end, "you're on it all the time..."

I see g and the e, also f# looks like, but I cant tell the other...

  • @starcraft2commentary it goes F# A E G in the ending. I'm not sure what the G is actually called but imo it's what makes this song so pretty when he hammers onto the 2nd fret of the high e 300032

  • @mikefenn00 i think your G is just a D7 with a G bass. i could be wrong but thats what it looks like

  • @potii92 fuck i mean just a regular D

  • It's a Yamaha FG-180.

  • Anybody know what kind of guitar that is?

  • It's sad, the guy who uploaded the original video of this (the one linked to in the description) seems utterly clueless of how important this footage is- from his comments he seems to equate it with a bunch of lame mid-90's portland bands that he just happen to have footage of.. really tragic.

It's like if someone had a tape of the beatles playing in a living room and didn't release it because they were more concerned with their friends' bands! Dude!

  • Wow...

  • was that blonde hair natural

  • 'cause I got to split, I'm late to leave.

  • story of my life

  • Dat smile.

  • come onnnn man the 90's weren't that long ago. you're making me feel old

  • never seen him smile before :)

  • RIP brother. You are dearly missed, every day.

  • this sounds really similar to drive all over town i just realized

  • Oh man, this is infinitely useful in learning to play this... And infinitely adorable.

  • ♥ : (

  • ELLIOTT SMITH IS THE BEST THING EVER TO HAPPEN TO ME

  • @plxplxkthx : I agree

  • @plxplxkthx i sadly agree

  • @plxplxkthx me too

  • Happy Birthday Elliott...We miss you <3

  • this touches me so much. it feels great and hurts at the same time. almost like love.

    this is beyond explainable.

elliott's songs will never die. he knew it!

  • @jimbeamrye I couldn't agree more. When I hear his music i feel so happy but so sad at the same time. Unexplainable.

  • @dylanlochhead that's wut they call a beautifully sad song that elliott was notorious for. i can never get enough. it sometimes helps me deal with problems in my life. not this song in particular. this song is about his and his sister's stepdad molesting them when they were younger. same with the song roman candle. read the lyrics and you'll know wut i mean

  • Um yeah this an Elliott Smith video not a Bible study

  • He looks like hell in this performance.

  • thank you so much for this. i have a dvd with as much elliott footage there is out there to the public/youtube and it doesnt have this on there.

  • I think i died when he smiled at the end

  • wow,the memories

  • Elliott was. the. man. end of story. What a fact bringer in a confused material world.

  • He had the BEST smile.

  • his smile at the end kills me

  • the only man for me, too bad he's dead.. i'll always be trying to find him anyway.

  • One of my favorite songs. One of my favorite performances.

  • Every time I watch this video I get the chills.... Only Elliott can do this to me.... If he only knew how much he was loved....

  • jesus isn't real, whilst elliott was.

  • Elliott Smith is proof that anyone can be beautiful I mean I've seen pictures of him where he's got the right hair and the right pose and he looks pretty gorgeous...gorgeous is the wrong word for it.

But who gives a fuck about how he looks when he can make music like that?

  • Word he was the fucking man!

  • @MolkoxLewd

good reasoning. it doesnt matter what anyone looks like, just listen up.

  • Such a captivating mind.

He's one of the most interesting people to have ever lived.

  • probably 94' or 95', i must have been 5 years old, fuckk im so angry ill never get to meet this man, 19 now and hes my all time FAVORITE and will be forever more.

  • hahahahaha same, though I'm 18, but hey same shit :).

  • @Somethingpower Right, because if he were alive, you guys would definitely be hanging out all the time.

  • @missusbojangles jerk!

  • watch this and then "elliott smith lets get lost seattle" video. its kinda depressing

  • @paintedturtle i don't get why people voted down my comment? whats wrong with it?

  • He would've turned 40 last August. He was such a talented guy, no, he wasn't a pretty boy-if you want that go watch Adam Lambert.

  • elliott is one of the most beautiful people i have ever seen.

  • In a certain way, yes. He wasn't what most people would consider conventionally attractive, and I think he knew that, but he definitely had a beautiful soul. Poor guy always felt guilty for something, even just being a white man. Well, according one of the books about him at least..

  • he is a beautiful man in my eyes!!!!!!

  • @kelllydeee

addictions take over the mind in an instant. being sad is the basis for writing beautiful art.

  • pesonally i love this video, it reminds me of a regular old utuber playing a song, being in just a regular living room and all. No special guitar or equipment not much different then a utuber making a song, but if he was a utuber he would be one of the best out there making music, his voice and his musical talent is just amazing! and there's no tricks or any special effects, just a regular song by a regular person, if u didn't know who he was, but yes he was much much more then a regular person!

  • yeah you are right mate

  • @ganuenen If he WAS a regular youtuber, even being who he was, he'd be neglected by all but a few hundred people. "Oh, just an amateur... how come i got to see this video, I must have clicked a wrong link", without paying due atention to the song and it's lyrics. Don't you think?

  • First watched this vid 6 months ago and its just as amazing as i remembered. I really should watch it more...and i will.

  • hey there buddy hahah, i agree it's a great tune every time around!!!

  • is that him jesus christ

  • Blonde elliott smtih...woah

  • hehe, elliott is anything but shallow.

  • Comment removed

  • There's no palm muting in this video.

  • holy cow is that the first time ive seen elliott smile?

    its a wonderfull smile

  • I think he's pumped because he gets the song right, it feels good to play something exactly how it's suppose to be played - I know I've had that look cross my face briefly at shows, and I try to repress it too. Just a thought... but I just like to think of him as light hearted - and fun.

  • Haha everyone is giving russell thumbs down because they think he's talking about elliott, but he's talking about Jacob! Just thought I'd point that out...

  • haha thanks for pointing that out, just accidentally gave him a thumbs down then

  • this was in reply to JimmJacob calling him "ugly" - i have nothing but love for Elliott.

  • i love his smile

  • Did anyone notice that smile at 2:57 (not the one at the very end) - it's suppressed quickly. I wonder what he was thinking about. hm.

  • Yeah, definitely noticed. He was definitely thinking about something.

  • Yeah. You can tell that he really was thinking about something.

  • I`m very sure he was thinking about something

  • probably looking at someone in the crowd?

  • no other one but elliott

  • wat album is this on!!???? ahh its so good..

  • It wasn't included to any of his albums. A quite low production quality version appeared in the split with Pete Krebs, called Shytown. (1994)

  • It was released as a single, I think, very early in his career.

    It's not on an album.

  • pdx or

  • portland maine or the other place

  • ... the other place? The "other place" he went to high school, look it up.

  • i love him. i cant stop crying, its so good.

  • Woah! :D

  • Yep! Then let's glorify Elliott, cos at least he left us the most brilliant songs ever.

  • oh no... that smile at the end... oh no...

  • perfectly played elli

  • what year is this?

  • judging by the blond hair im going to say either '95 or '96

  • I had not seen him with it before, its interesting.

  • THIS SONG IS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL WOW

  • love the smile at the end.. genius.<3

  • i met elliott breifly during a promo for his XO album. making eye contact struck a fear into me i'll never forget. elliott, come back. portland needs you. =(

  • once he rises from the dead, well give you a call.

  • yeah, i am well aware of his death

  • no way! a smile! a big cheesy grin! =D i have wanted to see elliott smile like that for years. that was the best thing in the world.

  • Elliot Smith will be a way better addition to this world than Jesus ever was. His beautiful songs dont cause near as much death as Jesus has and the other religious poisons spawned by its many clones

  • there are a lot of similarities between elliott and jesus.

  • Elliott was way better though.

  • haha. well said. agreed my man. agreed.

  • @Devilslittleimp this is ellioth you dumb

  • @rurakker Elliott

  • @PinkDevilFish i see now your comment was a reply, so nevermind mine :)

  • @rurakker LOL

  • 0ooooh please no... no comparisons between elliott and jesus please.... EVER. lets not totally glorify him because elliott was JUST a person.

  • thats around the first album id think?

he has blonde hair on the back of the self titled second album.

Nice tune, looks so young there.

  • Is he blond in this video? OMG his smile just melted me...

  • yeah he is :)

  • anyone know the year here?

  • I'm thinking 95-96 one of those

  • One of his numerous great non-album songs.

    Immensely good.

  • oh boy amazing of course. omg he didn't have his bracelet on

    love him

  • If only he could play in my living room

  • Such a sad song, I love the contrast with his smile at the end! :)

  • that smile...everything seems so much better

  • Fantastic. Jesus he had talent.

  • are you saying jesus is better than elliott smith?

  • No. Jesus couldn't play guitar. He could make one, but he couldn't play for shit.

  • so you are saying jesus' talent lay in guitar making?

  • well he was a carpenter

  • there is no proof of that my friend.

  • not much proof he ever exsisted realy

  • Elliot?

  • that just made me really sad ://

  • best songwriter ever...

    get it right!

  • i agree :]

  • Incredible song.

  • love you so

    ever

    xo

  • when i heard band in his hand i always visualized a wedding ring. i don't think he was sexually abused but he obviously didn't like his step dad at all

  • If this isn't genius then I don't know what it is.

I wish Elliott would see how many people love him. And maybe he can.

  • This song really shows his abuse of drugs, "Charlie got a band in his hand A rubber loop" sounds like a tourniquet "You're on it all the time" his abuse "I'm just trying to sleep" and some other references to heroin

  • you say it like its a fact.

  • sorry if i came out that way that's just what the lyrics say to me, they can speak that way to me and have an entirely different meaning to another person it's just a matter of how you look at it.

  • He looks so old in this video.

  • i dunno.... seems like in the videos where hes long black hair he looks older

  • Whoah....I just had to take a deep breath after watching this one. This is the most amazing piece of footage. Thank you for spreading it around. I'm gonna probably watch it many more times tonight. Wow. I miss him so so so much....

  • i love this song.

I can't explain what some music does to me.

It's a sad feeling, but there's also this slight, quiet joy.

    Although the feeling is rare.

Most music comes at me and just grazes my shoulder; songs like this pentrate right thru.

Anyway, yeah, i'm glad this man existed.

  • i know exactly what you mean!

elliott's voice just does something to you...you can't help but to hear what he's saying.

  • The smile at the end was priceless, thanks for posting.

  • wow this is old

  • anyone one here know wether this is a Yamaha fg-402 or fg-108? I know it's one or the other, I just can't tell.

  • hi. it's an fg-180

  • tnx good i have this song and ty 4 put this video 10 points 4 sure :D

  • I wish I had this song on a CD. It seems like a good song to listen to on the subway, watching the scenery pass by and thinging of Elliott playing in bars. In my mind, he would be really happy.

  • i have it on CD!!!!

it is wonderful to listen to everywhere. =]

this CD is called thirteen+1 and i think somebody stole a lot of the songs on there and made a copy of it a long time ago [even before all of these leaks came out]. i wish i could send you a copy. =]

  • i like this song aLOT

  • It's interesting. I bet when Charlie was mistreating his stepson, he didn't think Elliott would grow up to be famous and write songs that are essentially exposing him.. it's pretty poetic. And sad.

That being said, I make no claims to know what really happened. Just observations from his songs and some quotes.
