in todays foods the put so much crap in them they can last years and years especially canned goods

meh, it's not just the crap in them....Canning something makes it last for years and years and years...

Canned food from napoleon's army has been opened 200 years later and fed to mice and rats with no effect....other than stopping their hunger..

I don't buy into the whole expiration date with many things, especially Rx and over the counter meds.
