we had read that it may be advantageous not to dispel myths regarding hypnosis prior to induction. the argument was that it may facilitate greater cooperation and receptiveness to suggestion if the recipient's expectations were being met by playing towards what they already believed regarding hypnosis. do you have an opinion on that theory?
@JuneYankee we can try. we read that explaining hypnosis and how it works to a recipient prior to their first hypnosis session may make it harder to hypnotize them. that if they begin to develop a clinical understanding of hypnosis it may make it harder for them to concentrate during induction. have you observed this yourself? that knowing more about the process may be distracting when trying to be hypnotized, fighting the urge to critically evaluate technique rather focusing on the induction?
@morbid301 I have an opinion even though I wasn't asked for it. The notion of working with someone's beliefs is not only useful but necessary. Whether or not they believe in hypnosis is irrelevant. It doesn't matter what the person believes as long as the person working with the client understands how to respect and use those beliefs in order to create behavior shifts. This is not as well known as you'd think. Most people don't really understand what "hypnosis" is etc. Hope that helps.
