  • You should put up more videos of your and your school's dances! This was amazing.

  • Shambhavi, Excellent! beautiful, serene. I watched it many times. Background music is very nice. I am not great fan of fusion music. Frankly I would not have thought of it as fusion, unless someone would have told me so. Where is your school located?

  • i love the music. I love the costumes. and the grace with which each dancer dances. The sync is perfect. The movements are so subtle smooth and graceful. One of the BEST kathak videos on youtube. <3

  • Hi. Can you suggest any english song on which Kathak can be performed?

This dance has beautifully done. Excellent choreography and well synced too.

  • gorgeous choreography, coordination and such graceful dancers!

  • It is excellent - both dance and the music. All my credits to you kathakshambhavi.

    Well done!

  • beautiful!

  • Oh Gosh...so inspiring every time! I´ve watched this clip so many times but each time, it´s so refreshing. Watching it, I can´t understand how someone can connect such a dignified dance with the profession of courtesans and such. So much elegance, dignity and purity.

  • @Khwaab , thank you so much.

  • hi, i am fascinated with indian dances though i admit i dont know much of the culture and beliefs. Do you think i can learn from your posts? I really want to learn how to do the right moves in indian dances..i am a belly dancer btw...

  • @azimramariz

Hey friend, you sent this message to me "Khwaab" instead of the uploader Shambhavi. She´s the expert, ask her please :) Just press "comment" instead of "reply" otherwise you´ll be replying to the last user who commented.

    Peace

  • @azimramariz Indian classical dance takes many years to learn, just like any other classical art form. It really does take a lifetime to learn because there's so much to learn. It's best to learn from a teacher who can give you the right corrections in dance, that way you have the correct basic technique and also so you don't cause any injury to yourself. :-)

  • @Khwaab Is this Pedro Eustache and Paul Livingstone playing? Hard to make out the faces, but sounds like Pedro for sure. Killer players. I mixed an album last year they both played on. I can't make out the tabla player at all. Can't see a face.

    Great stuff!

    Cheers,

    Pete.

  • @Khwaab The Victorian Brits did that. They pronounced the dance indecent & consigned it to the brothel when they took over India. It was originally a temple dance & than it was a court dance long before the Brits arrived.

  • @Khwaab I agree, I must have watched this video 100x and always find it inspiring. But the courtesans did help to preserve Kathak, which would've been otherwise lost due to the British rule in India. So they had a very important place in Kathak's history.

  • BRAVO ME ENCANTAN

  • Could any hindustani pundits or carnatic vidwans let me know the difference between Darbari and Darbari Kaanada?

  • Shambhavi, aap ka tahe dil se shukria for sharing this beautiful piece of art! As somebody else said, been watching A LOT of Kathak vidz here but this stands out. Not just because of the synchronisation, music or skills. I don´t know, kuch khaas tha...I think when ppl dance with the heart it actually reaches the heart/soul of the watcher. But when ppl dance only with their body....it doesn´t have the same effect. Cont.

  • hey!

m very much interested in learning kathak.... but have no idea of any kathak school...

  • @shraddhazope: there is a kathak school in Chicago run by Gauri Jog. gaurijog(.)com

  • @MartaEzis : well i want sum1 in houston... thanks for helping thgh...

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

  • everytime i watch this video...i fall in love w/it even more. so entrancing...it makes me want to learn kathak, or at least this style of it!

  • Haven't seen a more synchronised dance of kathak ever. That was B.R.I.L.L.I.A.N.T. The clothing was traditional and original, unlike many others who are fond of wearing the clothing of mujra and dancing in cheap gestures. You must take it on yourself to be the ambassador of kathak, others are simply ruining the entire thing.

  • This is not the typical kathak dance, but it's still beautifully done. Actually I like this better than the typical kathak dance. Many a times when one deviate from the standard forms, things don't work out so well. But I think this new form you've created is great. Just curious, are the 3 other dancers, students,or assistant instructors at your school?

  • @parleegee , the other dancers are my sr disciples as well as members of my troupe and teachers at 'Shambhavi Vaze's International School of Kathak'.

  • @parleegee I'm not sure what you think "typical Kathak dance" is, but what's performed here is very traditional Kathak. Everything from the music, movements, and costume are traditional in this Kathak style. Kathak is known for it's both it's slow and delicate to it's fast and sharp movements.

  • Beautiful girls and exquisite dancing, so perfectly in sync. Just delightful to watch. Thanks for posting

  • @angelialvares : that's exactly that word that came across my mind: E-X-Q-U-I-S-I-T-E !!!

  • Whoa!! It is so pretty how you guys are so in sync with each other. It is always not so easy to dance so in sync with each other. Yall rock!!

  • It´s perfect. The movements express de music, the feelings, the coordination. wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is very beautiful.

  • I sometimes feel that the arguments for and against speed versus grace in Kathak is totally misplaced. Kathak has a very rich repertoire, and contains a range of elements. Kathak can be devotional, romantic and ecstatic. There are dances that are deep with philosophic meaning and dances that are slow with out hardly any movement only depicting emotion and then there are dances that are lightning fast. A true Kathak dancer should be able to master the entire spectrum.

  • Breathtakingly awesome!

  • does anyone know which gharana does she belong too?

  • Comment removed

  • The style looks like Jaipur Gharana

  • Why do you say that?

  • yes, awesome

  • Awesome!

  • Shambhavi,

First of all; many congratulations for achieving the picture perfect synchronization in this piece.

It is true that many Kathak dancers go haywire as far as the sync is concerned.

The one thing I didnt like in the description is that you have resorted to comparison with speedy dance? I think speedy dance has its own set of audience and the grace has its own. Then why succumb to as trivial a thing as comparison?

  • I like to watch kathak videos on Youtube and I have seen a lot of them, but I always end up watching this one. Movements, synchronization, costumes, music - everything is perfection itself!

  • Percussions are of solid quality.

  • I've seen nearly every Kathak video on Youtube. This is still one of the very best I've ever seen.

  • Sitarist is really good very fluid wow.

  • Ekdam mast

  • My God....it's like they're mirror images dancing...

    Superb!!

  • I love how synchronized they are! Many kathak group performances are very out of sync; this makes it easier to watch.

  • Wow! this is brilliant stuff...looks so effortless and graceful, but actually it has so much footwork and technical finesse which is done so subtly. Truly enjoyed it!

  • i have seen shambhavi from her childhood days she was always an awesome dancer

  • actually i find "regular" kathak and bharatnyatam dances very harsh and abrupt...this appeals to me for it's grace, fluidity and elegance...no hopping around or spastic movements..tres bon

  • REally unmatchable. Performance beyond comments. Cant be criticized for anything atleast by common men like us. I am surprised the synchoronization of hand movements of the group, how they did it. The photography needs little improvement though.

  • one of the best kathak videos on youtube. very graceful and i guess technically near perfection. thanks for sharing.

  • one of the most beautiful dances ive seen.

  • Brilliant grace and eloquence

  • the feminine form in graceful motion,sublime indeed......syncro. a full 10

  • Very beautiful performance)) It's so elegant and graceful) I like your intersting horeography))

  • simply superb...

  • very VERY beautiful dance

i have never seen a better kathak dance in my life.

  • True beauty! I am moved by the elegance of your performance. Bravo! Please do a tour and come to Washington DC!

  • Amazing synchronisation.

Would love to watch your dance again and again.

  • Que marviollsa!!! Gorgeous, beautiful, muy muy bonita.

  • keval apratim...

  • enchanting!!!

  • I really want to learn Kathak!

These dancers are so graceful and synchronized...so beautiful to watch!

  • oh man though, the first couple of months were hell; dedication and patience are the things you really need for kathak

but it totally pays off in the end!

  • I am afraid I have neither...I don't have the time right now either...but perhaps I can copy dance moves. It won't look right, but since I haven't the skill to discern that, I think I shall be satisfied enough...

Thank you for the experienced advice:)

  • how old were you when you started kathak? I want to start learning but it seems the classes are filled with 6 year old kids..

  • to bellydanceshiva, i was 9 then, im 15 now. and i know that the classes with 6 years old is a little discouraging, but just do it, trust me! i was also the tallest and oldest and i was self conscious for like the first half hour. and i havent thought about age difference or maturity in the 6 years since lol.

  • yeah you're right. I should get my butt into gear. thanks z

    WoW

    AskTamkin

    London

  • that was without a doubt one of the most breathtaking performances I have seen. mesmerizing. I had to go back and watch it a few times..

    well done

  • This is one of the most beautiful classical Indian dance I've seen(including both Kathak and Bharata Natyam). It's a nice blend of dance movements and the accompanying music. And the quartet(foursome) of synchronized dancers adds to the overall effect of the presentation.

  • needs may be a little more cripness i think in some place. but it is soo graceful, soft.

  • Gorgeous. Your choreography is absolutely exquisite. It's remarkable how well in synch the four of you are.

  • I have seen this video soo many times, just beautiful i wish i could dance like that.

  • o hmy God you dance so well, and the 4 dancers are together there isnt any wrong step i really applause your work!!! i would have wanted to learn kathak so much, but there isnt any school near my place but i love your performance bravo!!!

  • thats really nice i used to do kathak but there isnt any kathak school which i no of anymore

  • Hi, where are you located? may be I can find a good kathak school for you..

  • hi i am in norwich, england. any hopes of finding a school?

  • I´m from Turkey and i was so impressed since my childhood for this kind of music and dance Later somehow i found out of the turkish influence in past and that makes me more interresting. And on the other side turkish people has also influences from indian traditional things and mehndi, clothing....

  • the turkish did influence indian music and dance but the greater influence came from the persians

  • I think indian people has most beautifull culture in the world... (turkish people are arabics in past - before Byzans) We have to be happy that some things in history is happening and the result are things like Kathak and so many diffrent dances and music..

-...SORRY, my english is not perfect!!

  • istanbulda yaşıyorsan bharatanatyam dersi alma şansın var.ben başladım kursa.ama hoca maalesef kathakçı değil.ama dediğine göre bharatanatyamı söktükten sonra kathak kolaymış zaten.

  • I watch tihs over and over again, i can´t get enough of it, all 4 are so gorgeous dancer... I LOVE IT! Please post more videos, pleeeeaaasssseeee....

  • every movement speaks a thousand words, absolutely flawless!

  • Mughals removed the Hindu story telling element and replaced it with secular love songs. So in fact both Natya and Nritya elements still remained. Just one aspect Nrtya was more emphasized. What I objected to and failed to see, is why that would make Darbari Kathak ugly

  • u very wrong... they so beautiful and great dancers...Darbari kathak is like orchestra all doing together. thanks for postin

  • This dance really takes the viewer back to the courts of Mughal India. These dances passed down in one form or another from teacher to student through the ages, remain beautiful through the years and are as delightful today as they were then. Ranna

  • Do you know how kathak originated ?? I assume no :)

Kathak originated from "katha" which is a hindi word and kathak means telling a story through dance... It originated as a art of kathakars who used to narrate stories in temples in form of dances in northen india. Most famous Kathak dances are praising Lord krishna inspired by meera n radha :).

  • Yes, it is true that Kathak originated as a Hindu art form, but the Mughals adapted it to the courts and infused it with dance movements and musical instruments from Persia and Turkey, as well as replaced the devotional Bhajan with the sould searching Ghazal.

  • Go tell Sri Birju Maharaj that he has been training dancers in an ugly dance style, or tell musicians that the Sarod makes ugly music because it was influenced by the Mughals. Personally I am delighted that India can enjoy both the Hindu and Muslim influences. That is what has made Kathak so rich and varied. Akshee, your comments to my posting is both ignorant and arogant. Please think well before you start condemning an art form you do not understand.

  • Then came the mughal empire which included it into its culture and originated lucknow gharana.. So we have 3 gharanas for it as far as I know Jaipur, banaras and lucknow.

So kathak done in mughal courts were an ugly representation of a beautiful dance form :)

  • One of the instuments they modified was the Sarod. The Lucknow Gharana is the essence of that Mughal style and one of its greatest patrons was the Sultan Wajid Ali Shah. To say that the dances were ugly comes from sheer ignorance, and smacks of partisan prejudice.

  • no no.... u got me wrong :O

I never said lucknow gharana is ugly :O. I meant the way they changed d face of kathak at that time was not that good as it changed from being a storytellling to art of pleasure. while writing i guess tone r not heard so meanings r not clear.

  • Kathak is not ALL about story telling. Like all the Indian Classical dances, it conforms to the rules of the Natya Shastras. It consists of both Natya(dance with story) and Nritya(pure dance movement).

  • Lucknow Gharana is not only about "art of pleasure". I am a Kathak student in the Lucknow style and I can tell you that my Guruji teaches mostly religious Hindu dances. Every year he puts on a huge Krishna Leela and Ramayana show.

The Mughal influence on Kathak is a part of history, and nothing to be ashamed of. Perhaps you should do some more reading before criticizing.

  • I think this piece really demonstrates a lot of concentration among the dancers. It also has a certain pleasant quality (grace and humility) that lacks in many kathak performances...maybe because so many times the bang bang bang and turn turn turn really fast element is emphasized, particularly in the western schools. I love this piece.

  • oh and PS: since I myself know kathak, I can say that this is not bollywood...it's authentic.

  • amazing!!!

  • Why is synchronization and simplicity more important than depth and complexity in art?!?! This is classical--you are supposed to make the complex seem simple, not the simple be synchronized. Then what's the diff btwn this and a kathak style soft bollywood dance???

  • Beautiful...just beautiful...so elegant and graceful...INDIAN

  • what a finely choreographed piece of kathak! and such precise synchronisation! yet the most imortant aspect that most art forms lack: SIMPLICITY. the music as well is equally commendable for being so integrated, harmoniuos with just the optimum balance. i have not seen this anywhere else so far.

  • you guys are really good! i performed this dance too!

  • indian beauties at its best

  • indian beauties at its best

  • Beautiful, flawless - you are all very talented.

  • I loved it, so beautiful and elegant. Perfect synchronization, amazing.

  • What an excellent piece -- very subtle but extremely sharp! As a Kathak dancer I know how difficult it is to have everybody synchronised so perfectly; it makes the achievement even greater -- well done.

  • please post more videos of her...she's amazing

  • What a beautiful piece!!! AMAZING!

  • So nicely synchronised!! Very smooth flow!
