Majors normally makes me wretch from all the candied goodness, but Vivaldi sure knew how to weave some of that disaccordant feel into it. Grandeur galore!

Pardon my ignorance here.. but what makes this a "period" performance? The strings that they use? The fact they have a harpsichord in the mix? The whole idea of period music is retarded. It's music. You play it. It sounds good or it doesn't. Period music seems to be more of a crutch than an actual reason.
The definition of "period" is not an arbitrary "crutch". It is a well historically defined set of time intervals that define the predominant musical architecture. That is: the rules and regulations of how the music of that time was being developed among some other things.
Furthermore, it defines the predominant environments like in this case, the Baroque period, is heavily influenced by the Lutheran lithurgy and the Catholic, to a lesser extent.
Well, I don't see how the period's religions could have anything to do with how a modern musician might vibrate or trill or articulate within a Baroque piece. I see what you're getting at, but I think you are simply angry at my crutch statement. I don't think there are historically defined "regulations" - because period music evokes quite a controversy in the Classical-listening world. Period music tends to be performed by overly-informed musicians who substitute academics for artistic feeling.
period music is instrumentation and convention. in the baroque period, vibrato on string instruments was seen asa ornamentation, not an ubiquitous character of every note as in the post classical periods. other things like tempo and dynamics are distinctly different in period performances, as well as phraseology and the use of the middle parts. period music is a style that appeals to some and not to others. IMO, this piece is not a period performance.
Very wrong. You cannot understand any kind of art without understanding the life and mentality of people who lived at the time when it was created. Baroque music makes much more sense when played on period instruments and by people who are informed about authentic performance. When I say "makes more sense", then i actually think it sounds better! It is not about being obsessed with historical accuracy, it's about what is the point of that music at all.
@Mislavce But surely you don't think the music is completely misunderstood when the mentality of the culture is unknown to the musician? I would say, rather, that it is most like a window into the life of those people, but to fully see through the glass and into their lives requires more than just the knowledge of the compsition itself, but a knowledge of the culture. That, I would say, inspires the musician to play better, and the music itself is a time capsule for culture.
Ah, these are the recordings I have! Glorious! I have to admit I'm not a massive fan of period performances... though it really depends what i get used to first - I've got some period versions of some concerti, and cos they're the first versions I've heard, I find no fault with them. Whereas this to me is the definitive sound for L'Estro Armonico and the other Marriner stuff, and I can't really enjoy most period versions of these concerti :S
This piece is incredible. I'm 13, and my fav orite composer EVER is Vivaldi. Other wonderful songs of his are "Tempesta di mare" and " Andromeda liberata"..... True, nobody DOES ever seem to talk or listen to him..... ; (
I'm near 18, I've listened to classical from mi first childhood and I had forgotten Vivaldi for several years. Now in the last month I've re-discovered him. And I find he's WONDERFUL! You are true saying that he is unfairy forgotten...
Wonderful stuff! :) I don't listen to much Vivaldi, but this is one of my favourites from him!
