These women you speak of were mainly based in europe and the vocalist for the groups rather than solo singers, this was more common back although there has been solo vocalist like India.

I think its interesting mainstream RnB is being influenced by eurocentic dance house music, I prefer Kelis's take on this rather than BEP , Ushers, Rhianna and Akon.

Music as in instrumental music - this is symbolism for there being something missing in her life.
