Bone Machine is one of my top 5 albums... I'm currently on day three of a "Tom Waits Only" week. Nothing else. Pretty sweet week so far.. i feel deranged and i've been drinking alot..
This song makes me want to cry. It makes me want to get blind drunk. It makes me want to fight. It makes me want to hold my girlfriend close and never let go. It makes me want to live more than I do.
It took Jeff Buckley to find the heart and soul of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. The original version doesn't even sound like a good song, just a monotonous dirge.
I'm actually not a huge Cohen fan, but I definitely don't feel that his music is contrived in any way- just not my taste. I could wax pretentious about originality and use large words to make myself sound intelligent so as to prove my edgy point about originality in music, but what's the point? Like it or don't, and quit whining about what you consider 'offensive' in others' musical works.
@catherinepcs Leonard Cohen??? WTF? I hate that Hallelujah song can't understand how anyone would like it.
As far as good writers Waits is awesome, Dylan is great, so is Barrett, Bowie, Trent Reznor, Tod Ashley (firewater), Lou Reed and tons more ... but not Cohen
@petemayo To me, Leonard Cohen is amazing and Hallelujah is one of his best! I don't agree with all of your choices either, but I'm not going to take the snobby, "your taste in music sucks" low road with the WTFs and insults to your musical preferences. As you said, to each his/her own.
@catherinepcs Why not :) it's not a personal offense, it just amazes me that so many people could like that bland song. Go for it attack say something, you like tom waits so your taste in music doesnt suck, LOL WTF is low road? you know what is low road? claiming someone else is using the low road. You just said I won't be snobby and take the low road which equals I won't be snobby because I am too snobby. Get with it, say what you feel don't be offended.
@TheSobek LOL! Glad someone appreciates the unfair assholishness I administer among the innocent and happy. Trolling on the internet isn't as fun as it used to be too many emotions and taking everything seriousely. I thought people listening to a song ripe with fatalism/defeatism/determinism would be a little bit more hardened LOL
@petemayo you're out of your mind... trent reznor or david bowie over leonard cohen? you should realize that they're both pop idiots and cohen is a poet, a true poet.
@MDeckman4491 Bluff taken & challenge accepted, I dare you to find a cohen song that is half as good as nin "Right Where It Belongs" or as good as bowie's "quicksand" or "changes" I mean goddamn. Don't be pop-aphobic, if you are then your just a hipster :)
@petemayo not a hipster, I bumped the fuck out of pretty hate machine and plenty of ziggy when i was in high school, but dude, its leonard fucking cohen man, like they're in different genres let alone different leagues, not comparable, and thats not even a diss to reznor or bowie, they'd both probably agree with me out of sheer humility at least if not true affinity for the artist, i'd bet you both of them listen to him. and dylan was basically woody guthrie+leonard cohen.
@MDeckman4491 I hear you, I only know the artists by their works. Cohen bugs me because it doesn't seem/sound sincere. His poetry and what I have heard of his music, especially exemplified in the hallelujah song, is that it is an obvious topic delt with in an obvious way, it seems to be lacking in heart and originality and comes off contrived which is an inexcusable offense to me. I hate things that feel formulaic or obvious, I feel there is so much value behind originality and oft dismissed.
@petemayo I feel the same way as you about "Hallelujah"... and I feel the same way about a lot of Cohen's material but his album Songs of Love and Hate is one that I feel differently about. For example his song Avalanche is incredibly heartfelt in my opinion, you can feel the desparation... it's beautiful, give it a try
I really wonder were Tom would be without that amazing songwriting partner of his, his wife! She is hardly ever talked about in any interviews. Do any of us even you know this woman's name?
Well, how do you know she doesn't shun the limelight? having met Tom personally and spent about 2 hours of one on one time with him? I can assure you: there is MORE credit in this man's life given to Kathleen than you could EVER imagine! Awesome guy, very down to earth, very real...
ALL Hail Tom Waits... The dirty old man, and one of the last standing bastions of true music, may we follow you're example...You Ugly bastard and thank you.... a fan
The thing that really drew me to Tom Waits, lyrically at least, musical innovation aside, was his ability to encompass so many parts of the human mind and existance. Songs that say things about current events, songs about sadness, songs about imagination, humorous songs, happy songs, songs about lost love, songs about love... the more tom waits I hear the more I realize he really does write with his whole being.
tom waits is most curious to me...he puts truth, lies, corruption, politics, love, fantasy, hope, death, and pain all together into the music and his voice and lyrics. i am absolutely infatuated with how his music makes me feel.
Another astounding record from Tom; and another of his countless persona voices! Amazingly emotional song, amazing lyrics, brilliant instrumentation, everything about this song is perfect.
