@Mar2623 I remember that episode. Sam leaped into a guy who wanted a singing career against the wishes of his dad. At the end he bets the dad that Ford will fall down the steps. It would have been funny if Sam leaped into Ford just as he was falling down the steps. Then at the bottom he gets up, and says "Oh Boy!" as he shakes the guys hand.
Who the hell is doing the lame narration over this? Just show the damn clips, we don't need to hear your shitty Dane Cook-esque jokes and Looney Tunes-esque sound effects.
Gerald Ford is only well-known for being clumsy because of the presence of a couple television cameras and bad knees. The man was ambidextrous and an accomplished college athlete. He was a two position starter on back-to-back championship college football teams and was offered a contract by the Green Bay Packers. When he joined the Naval Reserves he was actually given a post as a fitness instructor before going on active duty during WWII.
@XYljin About two years ago, HuffPost did a photo montage of "Shirtless Presidents" (don't ask).
What followed was a series of photos of our Presidents in various states of being bare-chested, old-man flab, man boobs and all, from Kennedy through Obama.
They showed a picture of Ford standing poolside, and while he was flabby from the waist up, his calfs were JACKED! They looked like a college football player's legs; certainly not what you'd expect of a man in his 60s.
President Ford is left-handed. If he had been on the right side of his wife, holding the umbrella with his dominant hand his orientation would have been to his advantage, not to his disadvantage and he wouldn't have fallen. The fall up the stairs looks as if it was a result of the injury he probably acquired on his (pardon the pun) trip down.
President Ford is left-handed. Amazing that this guy was last good republican president. After that its all starting wars, increasing public spending, more debt, leave tax increases to democrats, tax cuts to rich, claiming to decrease public spending but not really and bullshit religious ideas.
Ford was actually one of the most athletic men ever to be president. But, as with every republican president since Lincoln, the lefties with the help of the contemporary media successfully labeled him as dull, slow witted, bumbling, etc. After all, if he was smart, he would have been a lefty just like them, right? It's classic narcissism, and still chapter one of the left wing playbook.
@grant135b Because it's wonderful when the righties create a militaristic dictatorship, go to a meaningless war, and lose all of our money, then blame the following lefty administration after they caused 100% of the problems...I cannot comprehend how stupid Americans can be that they believe what the Tea Party tells them.
I 'm a staunch democrat, but Gerald Ford was a good guy. We were angry at the time when he pardoned Nixon. Years later, we realized that he had made the right decision. And Ford paid dearly for that decision; he sacrificed his political future to heal the country. If only are politicians today were that noble. R.I.P. Gerry!
Did it take you a whole month to write that comment? I'm not even an American (thank christ), but I know enough to know Republican=Conservative, and any three year old, 30 year old, and 90 year old knows that conservative=dullard.
Ford was the last president not dominated by Wall Street interests. Every single president after him (and most presidential candidates) were simply agents of Wall Street. Falling down the stairs though sure didn't help Ford's image.
The Air Force officer who helped him up was Robert Blake, who shot down a MIG in the Vietnam War. Colonel Blake was my boss in the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing in the late 1970s.
@broncito47 Don't take my comment personally but I seriously have to question how you couldn't of know he was President. The main reason I bring this up is that you live here in the states not abroad. I have a feeling this is because you had ineffective history teachers. Any good US History teacher would have brought up Watergate and Vietnam. He was in office or involved in several major events .
wow they care that much about the president? hes not god you know and so what if he trips? if they saw someone else do that they wouldnt give a shit and not help the person but all they care about is the president
Come on guys, he was a great man and he doesn't deserve most of the crap most of you guys are saying about him. I trip alot and yes he did have a bad knee. God bless Gerald Rudolph Ford!
I wasn't alive when Ford was President, and didn't know that he was apparently clumsy until that episode on the The Simpsons when Gerald Ford moves in next door and he and Homer become fast friends and Ford falls down a lot. It was then explained to me that Ford was clumsy and had a few falls and trips while in office, lol. No big deal. Everyone falls.
@superdavid002 If you're talking about VP, then Nixon picked Spiro Agnew, and only got Ford in after Agnew had to step down due to tax evasion. Which makes Ford the only president in history that was not elected.
This footage was live too. He was supposed to descend majestically and gracefully. And yet practically every time he tried to appear that way he would fall down.
it's funny reading comments. people think because thye're presidents they can't slip or make any mistakes. they're not special, they're just sad little insecure humans like us, so get over it.
President Ford was our clumsiest President. He is also the Only one not Elected. He took over after Nixon resigned. His VP was arrested on different charges earlier in the year
Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Lyndon B. Johnson were not elected. They went into office when Presidents Lincoln, Garfeild, McKinley, and Kennedy were assassinated in 1865, 1881, 1901, and 1963 and Trumen was sworn in after FDR died. Get your facts straight before you go shooting your mouth off.
Ford is the only politican who served as both President and Vice and was elected for NEITHER. Not just the Presidency.
A Johnson and Arthur were both elected as Vice Presidents.
Roosevelt, Truman and L B Johnson all were elected Vice Presidents, then after becoming President due to deaths etc, also enjoyed a second term as President ELECT by the citizens of the US.
So, in a way, TheMearsorama just got confused. However, Roosevelt, Truman and L B Johnson definitely DID get elected to POTUS.
SS80-what the mearsorama meant was that he was neither elected vice president nor president, so I advise you to follow your own advice and get your facts straight before you go shooting your mouth off.
@SecretService80 You really have some anger issues. Were you dropped when you were a baby? I've come to the conclusion based on your comments that you are retarded, and I don't just mean haha your dumb retarded I mean you literally rode the short bus to school and wore a helmet retarded.
Gerald Ford is the ONLY president to take office without having been elected to the executive branch(president/vice president)
Yes, your statement about Ford is correct, however, "TheMearsorama" did not say that, he made it sound like no other President took office without being elected. therefore, I am ending this argument before it goes further. Good Bye.
@broncito47 Yeah, see, all humans can fall on wet stairs, even Presidents. I seem to remember though, that Gerald Ford fall a lot in his day... I wonder where all the other footage is....
She knew how to hold her liquor so I'm sure loss of coordination was never an issue for her. You have to give Ford credit for not pulling her down with him.
I have been reading a book on Air Force One and how the presidents went about their business while flying. According to the book, because it was raining Ford just slipped on the stairs.
I think maybe he was just nervous under the pressure of public scrutiny that comes with the Presidency Of The United States. It wasn't like he was doing this stuff everyday but it ended up being the thing people remember the most.

This illustrates how a bumbling man Pardoned Nixon. For those who say Ford was a great man. name something besides saving his party from the truth of who Nixon was.
Poor guy, lol. That's always so humiliating to slip and fall in front of people. He seemed like a bit of a klutz, although I think he had some old knee injury from playing football, and that's why he was always getting laid out. That plaid jacket is hot.
See? No one is perfect. Not even the President of the United States. If they fall like the rest of us, then why do you hold them at fault for things beyond their control?
It's not like Herbert Hoover CAUSED the Depression, or George Bush WANTED 9/11, they just happend to be at the Right Place at the Wrong Time. They get blamed because they failed to stop it as fast as the Impatient Masses demanded it.
You are absolutely right. Bush will most likely go down in history as the President who started another vietnam (Can ANYONE say for sure that Gore wouldn't have done the same? No, you can't) and the President who caused the greatest recession in many years (Cookie to whoever knows which President's fault this is)
America as a whole elected Bush, not once, but twice. We need to take accountability for our actions, and even if you didn't vote, he's still our president, we put him there.
Hmm. I'd hate to start an argument but I gotta rebuttle here on your "America as a whole elected Bush" point- America did not. Have you ever heard of gerrymandering? A considerable third (probably closer to half; but certainly not the whole) voted for him. Individuals don't elect officials, political blocs do. Heard of the electoral college? I'm just saying things are more muddled than one would think. (And I think businesses put America in debt, not just Bush, though he might have helped, heh).
The electoral college is moronic. It was essential long ago, when there was no mass communication, and it was very difficult for people to get to know political figures, or study their policies, but now in our information-laden world, we have none of those problems. Down with the electoral college.
Prez Ford got a bum rap for being clumsy. He was actually a gifted football athlete. He was hot, but got a real reputation for banging heads and slips....I think he needs to get dinged more for the plaid coats and white shoes. He was an Eagle Scout too!
He was trying to be a big shot by not holding on to the railing.

But two falls later, Chevy Chase took it and ran with it on the first season of SNL, and the image of Ford The Klutz has persisted ever since.

Poor guy, lol. That's always so humiliating to slip and fall in front of people. He seemed like a bit of a klutz, although I think he had some old knee injury from playing football, and that's why he was always getting laid out. That plaid jacket is hot.

This reminds me of a rhyme on Animaniacs.
John Kennedy had Camelot,
then Lyndon Johnson took his spot.
Richard Nixon, he gets caught,
and Gerald Ford fell down a lot.

some creatures werent meant to be on two legs, politicians should stick to slithering on their bellies.

No one is perfect.

WELL SAID! I'm glad somebody finally spoke out against those who post their ignorant, brainwashed comments.

i think herbert caused the depression by raising taxes in a time when people didn't have enough money for a increase in taxes

Redtoemonster 3 years ago
(And I think businesses put America in debt, not just Bush, though he might have helped, heh).
radonthegas 2 years ago
The electoral college is moronic. It was essential long ago, when there was no mass communication, and it was very difficult for people to get to know political figures, or study their policies, but now in our information-laden world, we have none of those problems. Down with the electoral college.

Prez Ford got a bum rap for being clumsy. He was actually a gifted football athlete. He was hot, but got a real reputation for banging heads and slips....I think he needs to get dinged more for the plaid coats and white shoes. He was an Eagle Scout too!
