  • I'm really pleased that the video helped you to hit your drives longer. It just goes to show that this old fashioned swing advice is still as relevant today as it was more than fifty years ago. Good luck with your game and thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • I watched this video before going to the range on Saturday, and playing this Sunday. I am a bogey golfer (17.8 index.) who drives the ball around 200-210. I was routinely driving the ball 220-235 using the advise in this video. My regular playing partners were even commenting on the length of my drives. Thanks!

  • The downswing for irons and woods is the same in terms of how you produce your sequence. Both videos tackle the downswing which many amateurs find challenging to understand. The video content is similar in that you start your golf swing down with pressure pulling on the shaft rather than pushing against the shaft. The difference with this video is that it focuses on those golfers who pull and slice shots with woods whereas the other focuses on the downswing sequence. Thanks for commenting.

  • What's the big difference between this and your Golf Downswing Made Easy video?

Is this more for a Drive/Woods?

  • It's great to read that this video lesson has helped you to hit straighter and further. Thanks for taking time to write a comment and the best of luck with your golf.

  • This video helped me a lot. I am not only hitting the ball straighter its also going farther. I had the classic over the top swing and nothing else seem to work but once i watched this video it was like a light bulb turned on.

    thank you

  • There's no doubt that a golf shaft that is not compatible with a golfers swing speed and loading style will have difficulty controlling the direction of their golf shots.

A 'whippy' shaft will generally produce erratic and inconsistent ball flight and it is indeed possible for a golfer to hit slicing shots as a result.

Also the clubs loft is very important and the combination of loft and shaft flex need to be correctly matched to improve ball flight consistency.

    Thanks for your comments

  • I have a delicate question. Is it possible that, a player maybe doing everything correct on the downswing and yet slicing the ball away under the following condition?

    a) Players swing speed a high but the Driver shaft is wippy resulting the shaft to bend in which forces the clubhead to reach the ball with an open face?

Please do take this issue under consideration and hopefully I will have an appropriate answer from your expert point of view.

    Regards

    TeeJay

  • Great, I wish you luck with it.

If you practice this tip for 3 weeks without trying another method you will create a new habit.

    This will help your golf.

Thank you for writing a comment.

  • I am going to try this next time i go driving range!! will giv e you feedback next time!!

  • Thanks so much for your comments. This simple move will be worth the practice as it positions the golf club so that it swings through the ball on the correct path. The additional benefit is more clubhead speed so with some consistent practice you will notice longer and straighter golf shots.

Good luck with it and thanks again for taking the time to post a comment.

  • Hi Lawrie. This video made me realize that for 20 years I've been casting. I've wanted to hit a correct iron shot for years. I haven't played often because my confidence was shot. I was defeated as I stood over the ball. I now feel like playing as I have something to work on. Thank you and I wish you had a school in WA.

  • I'm really glad that this video golf lesson helped you to hit your golf shots better. Thank you for taking the time to write a comment and good luck with your game.

  • Thanks v helpful as a twice a week golfer this is exactly my problem and you've fixed it!

  • Great, good luck with it. Play well.

  • im trying this today, will report back my results

  • It's great to read that you are hitting higher and crisper golf shots as a result of trying my suggestions.

The easiest way to square up the clubface is to make your left hand grip a little bit stronger.

Rotate your left hand clockwise on the grip until the golf ball starts to fly down the target line.

Thank you again for posting a comment and good luck with your golf.

  • Just tried this down the golf range.I can honestly say that i have never hit the ball so high, crisply and far in my 40 years of playing golf.Just need to sought my accuracy seems to be going to the right a little.

    Thankyou very much.

  • Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

  • nice vid

  • Absolutely; hooking is simply the squaring up of the clubface prematurely.

By leading the handle further into your downswing you delay the early release of the golf shaft and clubface.

The key is to keep the path of the hands consistent throughout the stroke and let the golf club release naturally as it approaches the ball.

I hope this helps you and thank you for taking the time to comment.

  • I tend to be hooking and not slicing everything ,probably releasing too early would this tip help?

  • It's always a real pleasure to discover that someone has enjoyed the video golf instruction on my youtube channel.

Thank you for your kind words Harry, it makes the time that it took to produce the videos worth every minute spent.

Good luck with your game and I hope that you continue to enjoy success playing this great game.

  • I have become a great fan Mr Lawrie Montague's video tips. "Golf Down swing made easy" was excellent. I got a lot of distance from that video. Though I got distance I was hooking the ball.I found out that I was coming over the top. Now after seeing this video I have started coming on the inside or i can say my club has started coming in to the slot. I hit a lot of shots straight with this technique . I thank you for the tip and the video. Put it simply.. you make golf easy :)

  • Thanks for taking the time to ask your question. If you ball has been starting right it sounds like your swing path is coming into the ball from an inside track.

The next part of this puzzle is to complete your forearm and body rotation. Watch my video "The Most Important Golf Swing Release" to work on the next stage of your stroke.

After studying this video you'll be able to release your club and get your ball flying straight consistently.

Thanks again for your comments and good luck.

  • Hey there. Great video.

I had been hitting over the top and I have started again on my golf swing. My homemade swing got me to 12 hcap but i have started all over again in the hope of single figs one day.

Since i tried swinging with this video in mind I have been pushing shots slighty right. I feel im close to a good swing but cant fix the straight right. Any common causes for this?

  • I guarantee you that practice will improve your memory and your confidence.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • thanks for the video hope i can remember it when im at the range

  • This simple move will help you to release the driver head at the right time in the downswing. The most important factor here is hand speed. In the video I mention that the hands must remain in their path into the downswing.

You want to accelerate your hands very gradually so that they move quickly as they move past the ball. Fast moving hands to the ball leads to an early release.

Remember start the hands on their path slowly and finish your stroke fully.

Good luck & thanks for your comments.

  • Thank you so much for doing an over the top drill using a driver. I've watched countless anti-over the top videos and usually the instructor uses a short iron. I'm fine with the short irons, its the longer clubs that I come over the top with. So thank you for that. One question I have is when I do your drill, sometimes I'll stick the driver head into the ground before the teed up ball. What should I be doing differently to fix that? Is that just from not releasing it as it approaches the ball?

  • @230southpaw actually i think its becase you are realeasing to early, or casting. obv i wold have to see your swing but typically you see that when a player releases to early and the club is bottoming out to soon. as you take the club to the top and the club hinges, you want to hold that hing as long as possiable in the downswing before you hit the ball.

  • Thanks so much for your compliment. My golf school is based on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

  • Great Video, where is your golf school? Yale yloiacono@yahoo.com

  • The parallel shaft line would be closer to your feet rather than the ball. This is because your hand path from backswing to downswing in an ideal sense maintains its radius to your spine. When your hands move away from this alignment problems begin to occur. Hand path is the key, all great ball strikers have this in common.

  • Hi there, does the shaft point down the parallel line by your feet (the first train track) or on the target line by the ball?

  • Sorry to read that you hit some right shots. I have no doubt that more practice perfecting your stroke mechanics until you have complete trust will make a huge difference to your control. I know that you have been hitting it really well in practice so the only difference between practice and performance is that golfers often think that the two are quite different. If you can hit it good in practice you can perform with it. Good luck and hang in there as your best golf is ahead of you.

  • club championship wasnt as good as i expected. i hit a ton of right balls. shot 93 / 95. I putted well. had some good holes but my bad holes were bad. i didnt abadon the technique though. i know its how i want to swing the club but dont want that right ball. before this video i struggled with hooks. i like the right miss better just want some understanding on how to stop it.

  • I wish you the best of luck in your club championship and hope that you continue to hit good golf shots all the way through your championship. Thanks again for your comments.

  • My club championship is this week and I've never felt more confident. I've been to the range several times and playes 10 holes since seeing this video. Ive never hit it better in my life. Hopefully my confidence will help me through the 1st tee.

  • I'm very pleased that you have saved 6 shots and I hope that you continue to see improvement in your game. Thanks for your comments.

  • Thank you for your question. I think the key to your lower body is to complete the rotation. That means that you have to have your belt buckle facing left of your target at the finish of your stroke. This will help you hit straighter and more consistent shots.

  • Question Sir !!

    What about lower body ?

Just try to stay calm ? During the practice, some shot is strong tendency to pushing shot , because of my wrong hip turn, I guess...

  • Oh... I love your lesson.

I practiced in range 2days, and tried my shot in the field. Guess what ?

    6 shot saved. I hit 7over.. Wow..

I hope my friend won't see this video lesson. hahaha.

    Thanks

  • That's an excellent question.

It depends on how 'strong' your left hand grip is. If you have a two to three knuckle left hand you will probably not need to rotate the left forearm actively.

If you have a 'weak' left hand grip (less than two knuckles) you may have to actively rotate the left forearm to square up the clubface.

In either case find the best way for you to square the clubface without trying to use too much forearm rotation.

Thanks for commenting and the best of luck.

  • Just a quick question if you don't mind:

Apart from pulling the handle in an arc towards the target, is an active left forearm rotation required to square the clubface at impact? Or will the clubface square itself if you continue to pull through?

    Thanks in advance

  • I'm always so happy to read that someone watching my golf instruction videos is hitting better golf shots and that is all the reward I need.

It's great when you onll have one thing to work on as any more than that and golf is nearly impossible to play confidently.

Keep up the good work and the best of luck with your golf.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

  • This is my last comment - Yesterday was day 2 of using your technique and I hit it awesome again. My pro was out on the range and said "I've never seen you hit it that good". I can't believe how much this one video has fix some head issues that I've had. My Pro asked me what I was working on and I said "one thing...getting the butt-end of this club going to my target" he said "keep it up!!!". I feel like I need to send some cash to your PayPal account. Thanks again!!!!!

  • It's great to read that you hit the ball better with this technique.

This is an 'old school lesson' so you won't find too many young golf instructors discussing it this way, just us old guys.

Most instruction focuses on lower body motion which is important but only if your hand path is corrected by it.

This technique works and with practice you'll discover that you can hit it consistently better.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate your feedback.

    Good luck with your golf.

  • I went to the range today and tried your advice and I hit them really really well. It was a little weird to make contact at first but after a couple Pwedges it made a lot of sense. Nobody has ever helped me understand how to use the butt-end of the club as a way to maintain my path back to the ball. Good stuff. I'm going back out now to hit more balls.

  • I'm really pleased that you persisted with this technique for improving over the top golf swings.

It is a little different to apply pressure to the end of the golf club instead of the bottom of the grip but I have found golfers can change their downswing path more easily this way.

I wish you the best of luck with you ongoing practice and play and thanks again for commenting, I always appreciate the feedback.

  • I gotta say I have struggled with an over the top for years and have watched countless videos on how to cure it and this video has helped me the most. I finally get it now on the proper feeling. At first it was really awkward to pull the handle towards the target and just let the club naturally release. It didnt feel at first like I was going to hit the ball at all but my divots straightened out and it added a number of yards to each of my shots not to mention, the over the top is creeping away

  • You're welcome, I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting.

  • Nice video Thx !!!!

  • I'm really pleased that the information in the golf instruction video has helped you so much. I have always believed that if a golfer is willing to continually search for a solution to a problem that like practicing it will be revealed. I wish you the best of luck with your ongoing development and thank you again for taking the time to add your comments.

  • Lawrie I can't thank you enough. For over one year my driver has stayed in my bag and as a result my game has suffered. I am a solid iron striker, however, when I hit my driver the ball flight went left then snapped to the right in a huge slice, travelling 130 yards.

  • Today I went to the range to practice your drill. WOW. I carried the ball 270 yards. I could not believe it. I hit 100 balls, all with the same result. I have been golfing for ten years and never has a drill had such a positive impact on my game. Thank you so much.

  • Welcome back to this great game. The 'over the top' swing is usually just a sequencing issue which can be adjusted without too much effort. In this golf instruction video I suggest that you control the grip end to control the head end. If you can keep the path of the grip at the same relative distance to your body in the downswing phase you will discover that you can square the clubface up more easily leading to longer and straighter golf shots. Good luck with it and thanks for your comments.

  • Great video, just getting back into the game after a few years away and have been slicing my driver a bit ,hitting my irons surprisingly well though..I know I'm coming over the top but can't seem to correct it.. I'm def having a little trouble with my set up as well, especially with the driver.. Can't wait to try this drill.. Should probably get the video camera out as well... Thanks again...

  • Great video and thanks for sharing. Really well explained!

  • Thanks for replying Mr Brown. It's common for more advanced golfers to feel that their arms and body are not in sequence. I have found that the most common reason is that the lower body - hips and knees move laterally towards the target for too long giving you the feeling that you get stuck.

Have a look at my video 'weight shift secrets of PGA...' at my video channel and study and apply what you learn there. That video was created for such a problem. and please let me know how you go.

  • yes i did.. i have a problem with this: once i get the arms to drop and get in the slot, i feel like i get stuck and i have a hard time timing up my hips, arms and shoulders.

  • Thanks for your comment, I always appreciate feedback. Yes its possible that the club head is still to the right of the hands as the club head was entering the delivery position.

As I'm sure you can appreciate the key to this lesson is less about the demonstration and more about the information that will help golfers who pull their shots more than they want, to start their golf ball amore on-line with less slice spin. I hope you enjoyed the message.

  • looks like the club head is still to the right of the hands
