Nah he doesn't. Sitting so your hip joint is higher than your knee joint only releases stress on your back. Sitting below will make your back work and result in pain in the long run. So I'd say he sits just right. I 'd raise the kit if anything.
@TheMASDrummer my seat hight is a result of a lot of experimentation and pursuit for good ergonomy and great sound. I sit high so that I can get around the kit while feeling relaxed and not having to reach out in order to hit something in my kit. I used to sit lower but that wasn't as good in terms of ergonomy and relaxed playing. There's something to do with moving from 20" BD to 22" BD as well. Also, it doesn't hurt that people can actually see me from the audience.
Hey, I'm sorry I don't know how much it costs. I'm endorsing DW in Finland. If you ask your retailer, they'll surely get you the price. The exact setup used in this video can be found from the description box. Thanks for the interest! :)
haha thanks! it does seem so from this video. The snare angle ahead; it's a bit away from me towards the camera. This pulls up the snare rim so I need to have the snare just a notch lower so that I don't hit the rim... I like it that way, after watching jojo mayer's dvd, I realized that angle works for me too
You're not mistaken. Many drummers sit lower than me. I think sitting high helps me reach the toms more easily. Also it keeps the distance between snare and the first tom to minimum. And audience can see what's going on...
Thanks! I'm using a sturdy DW throne. I've been adjusting the seat height over the years. It takes some time to get used to but the changes I've made were just a couple centimeters at a time so my body was always at it's comfort level. Sitting high has never been something I've aimed for. It just happens to work for me. My snare angle is towards the audience (like some traditional grip players have their snares). This also makes me wanna sit higher. Reason for the snare angle is another story...
Thanks! There's very little dampening (small pieces of tape in the sides) on the snare, just enough the get rid of the extra ring. It's so much better not to have too much ring when performing live - and that snare is my main live gun.Easy to mix, easy to make it sound great in pretty much any kind of stage. The room is a small concrete box and there's no ambient mics, no mixing was done except for a very light auto-gate to filter out humming. These things push it all towards a dryer sound.
Thanks! those splashes are both Zildjian A-customs, 8" and 10".
BTW: If you're considering buying, I suggest you to only handpick. To my experience the quality on zildjian splashes can sound pretty much like anything between crap to brilliant.
all but the snare, which is dw collector's brass. I've liked X-shells very much. Works great with types of music where you aim for massive tom sounds. Especially that 16" floor tom as a certain authority to it. in this clip it was accidentally left unmiked thus sounding flat. All the sounds are raw, just a small auto-gate on toms. the room I'm playing in is just horrible sound-wise, can't help it. But I must say, to me, these are the best drums I've ever played. And I've tried out quite a few.
Do I? The camera angle might make it look like that. It's a 22" BD so you don't get that low. I've always tried to set up my drums so that everything is reachable without an effort. I'm also trying to set up the drums so that a fast roll through all the drums could be thought of more like a lash of a sword than individual movements between the drums. I also want to have a good eye-contact with the audience so I'm not putting cymbals right in front of me.
I think x-shells sound great however you decide to tune them. At least I've been very much satisfied with the sounds. However, I'm not into "jazz-high" tuning of toms so I haven't tried that out...
X shell is intended for deeper tones on smaller toms. It is best to tune your highs low on x shells because the ply configuration helps on overtones. basically you can make your 8 sound as deep as your 12... X shells are amazing!
Thats an awsome set great drumming too

Oh I see. I think the throne quality affects your playing. Mine isn't really good so it wobbles if I sit too high.
And I did I mention what a good job you did in this vid? haha.
Keep drumming man. :)

Pulling a Buddy Rich? haha. His snare is tilted forward quite a bit.
I usually level my snare evenly. Although people often tilt it towards themselves, but it affects the tone.
TheMusicGene 2 years ago
Good playing. The recording sounds really dry though. I think you can test the snare without the dampening (if you have any).

how do you play with everything so low?
NickOnTheRun525 3 years ago
Do I? The camera angle might make it look like that. It's a 22" BD so you don't get that low. I've always tried to set up my drums so that everything is reachable without an effort.
