I started reading The Book of Three in about 2007 just before he died. Funny story actually, it took me about two years to finish reading the books! I read the first two, then I started the third, but I stopped halfway through and a year went by. Just in February I picked up the first book again and started reading. I literally just finished The High King and I am so sad that it's finally over.
I read the Prydain books about every 5 years. I had assumed in my adulthood that Lloyd Alexander was dead (I don't know what made me think that). I so wish I had realized he wasn't so that I could've written him a letter to add to the pile of letters he's probably gotten over the years telling him how inspirational his books were to me growing up and still are to this day.
I had an encounter with the great Mr. Alexander a year before his passing. He came into the bookstore in which I was working, and by coincidence I was the fellow ringing him up. I recognized his name on the credit card and quickly asked with wide eyes, "Are you Lloyd Alexander, the author?" Well, he mocked holding his hand over his heart and stumbled back, "Somebody knows who I am!" I consider myself fortunate I had a chance that day to tell him how much his books meant to me.
I used to pass out every night with one of the books from the Chronicles of Prydain in my hands when I was reading them. That man's brilliance inspired me to pursue writing as a career. May he rest in peace.
Ah, my favorite author. I do not exaggerate when I say that this man helped me survive my childhood. What a delight to see this video - now I feel as if I have met him personally. I love his humility, his gentleness, his wisdom. God bless him.
Lloyd Alexander was the best. I used to live a few blocks away from him. I brought my 2 children and their friend over to Lloyd's house and this video was almost exactly how I recalled him showing us everything mentioned on this video. He autographed our books. He was a genuine person, who cared so much. He was so pleasant and how lucky we were to get a tour of his home.
So sad to hear of Mr Alexander's passing. After reading the Prydain series as a young teen I found his phone number and called him. He spent about a half an hour talking with me about his books, characters, writing as a hobby-carreer-love, and encouraged my interest in writing. How generous of him to take my call. It's one of my fondest childhood memories and a story I've told my wide-eyed 8 year old daughter when we watched The Black Cauldren.
Right now i am reading The Beggar Queen and its a great book kinda funny too :) I am at page 195 almost done my Fave charectar is Mickle and Theo anyway and it is sad that Lloyd Alexander passed away :(
There was even a resemblence between the author and the animated version of Fflewddur Fflam from Disney's "The Black Cauldron" (1985), voiced by Nigel Hawthorne and animated by Steven Gordon (whose style can be seen in Richard Rich animated film "The Swan Princess").
Thanks for posting this. The Prydain books are some of my favorites from childhood. (I hope they never get made into movies, simply because I know they wouldn't be done the way I'd imagined them.) It's interesting to hear Alexander talk. I only knew him from his Froudian countenance on the book jackets.
This is wonderful. I always feel bad that I never wrote to Mr. Alexander before he passed away, but it's great to hear him talk about his books and writing in general. Thanks for posting this!
THIS IS SO AWESOME! I love Lloyd Alexander; family and friends were devastated to hear of his death a year ago. To see this is a great treat. (Btw we also used to argue about the pronunciation of names. Now I can tell them how Mr. Alexander does it, ha ha!) Thanks for uploading this!
So glad you enjoyed it. I felt bad about never writing him, especially after hearing some of his comments in the video. But I'll always be quick to recommend his books!
yeah, and i really wish some1 else wood make The Book of Three a movie. disney's wuz good, but a live-action 1 without and changes from the book wood b wonderful :)

What is the music at the beginning of the video, I've heard it many times in other places and I don't know what it is.

I love this video!
Sort of a nice, relaxing feeling being in Mr. Alexander's house going over his great books. I read them awhile ago, and was really taken by them.

Loyd Alexander: he was a genius, full of ideas and creativity.

He's almost exactly how I pictured Fflewddur. Funny.

His sense of humor was HILARIOUS, especially when he wrote about himself. It was so dry.
RIP Lloyd Alexander, and also thanks for serving our country.

Though I loved Mr Alexander I'm glad he passed away when he did. He died two weeks after his wife of 64 years. :( Their daughter passed away earlier.
