If anybody's being "held hostage", it's the unemployed by Obama himself. With his destruction of small and big business alike with neverending taxes and penalties (the employers in this country) and his attempted extension of unemployment benefits (incentivization not to work), he's done much more to raise the unemployment numbers than he ever has to lower them. The problem in our lifetime is simply the free market, was too free. major deregulation of free market occurred from the Nixon administration to the Reagan administration till today. I still believe to keep the free market, but it needs to be regulated properly so that recessions like the one we have endured does not happen ever again.

I just dont think that anyone or any government would be smart enought to do it. Look where regulation has got us today. Look where the government does the most regulations.... Banks, education, healthcare, these are the areas that are killing us. Where there is less regulation we prosper. Electronics, plastic surgery, ect.

@mmyr123 The government definitely does NOT regulate the banking system the most. they have been dr-regulating the free market for decades, it totally broke down the wall between wall street investment banks, and depository banks, and allowed them to merge. allowing a bank holding company to own other financial company's. Also allowing banks to go into securities, insurance, places they have no experience in. De-regulation gives enormous financial power, by their control of other ppls money.

I think you have to look at the fact that these banks would not have been able to do the things they did, like bailing out the banks if the Federal Reserve did not offer up the free money.  Government Intervention is the problem. If the government did not bail out the banks then the banks would feel they could make these stupid and risky transactions which is killing our country.

I think where we differ is that I believe the regulation of the economy is regulated by the federal reserve. They are the ones printing money and causing the up and downs. If the Federal Reserve did not pump all that money into the economy in order to promote Americans to buy houses we would not have this bailout problem.
